Sadly, it looks like we'll soon have a new monarch, King Charles, and presumably he'll be known by that title immediately.

Will the Duchess of Cornwall be Queen Camilla straight away?

I think someone elected would be better, but alas.

This country’s electoral record ain’t exactly stellar the last decade or so.

Not a whole lot going for the “elected leader”, current or previous or elected party, if you prefer!!!

KillingMeDeftly · 08/09/2022 22:35

Like the Queen Mother - she was a Queen. That was her title. But she wasn't The Queen.

It was her title when her husband was alive.

The notice just put on the gate at Buckingham refers to her as Queen Consort.

I think that was because they referred to the Queen (meaning Elizabeth) in the announcement. Technically, Camilla is now The Queen. To save confusion, and perhaps out of respect, they referred to her as the Queen Consort.

The QM was the Queen! (Before her husband died.) Just like Camilla is the Queen. The only Queen.

Are you differentiating between Queen Consort and Queen Regnant? Fair enough but they're still Queens - the only Queen, in both cases.

KillingMeDeftly · 09/09/2022 08:45

Interestingly, Camilla is called HM The Queen Consort on the updated royal family site. So perhaps that'll be her official title but it would be a departure. Her predecessors - the QM and Queens Mary and Alexandra - were all just HM The Queen.

Or perhaps it's a temporary thing until after the funeral and then her title will be adjusted. It surely can't be a sop to the Diana fans - it's been 25 years!

I wouldn't be so sure - I've seen/heard plenty of comments along the lines of Charles the cheater, she's no right to be my queen etc.

Although it may also just be because we've known 'the Queen' to be QEII for so long that it's an attempt to reduce the shock/juxtaposition of it now being someone else. The precedent would be Victoria's death - I'd be interested to know how readily the people took to having Alexandra suddenly being their Queen in 1901.

JenniferBarkley · 09/09/2022 09:04

I think it's because of the Diana stans and the Elizabeth stans - they've added consort to allow her use the title but make it Very Very Clear that she's a different kind of queen to her late MIL.

Even with that there's still frothing.

SenecaFallsRedux · 09/09/2022 09:12

My guess is that it is temporary until after the funeral, but who knows? As for Alexandra, she supposedly refused to be addressed as Your Majesty until after Victoria's funeral.

KillingMeDeftly · 09/09/2022 09:15

I think the mood was very different around Alexandra - she'd been Princess of Wales for decades and was very popular and never put a foot wrong. I suppose similar to how Kate is viewed now.

JenniferBarkley · 09/09/2022 09:16

Camilla's been a Princess of Wales for decades too Grin

JenniferBarkley · 09/09/2022 09:17

Rogue, unintended "a" above.

steppon · 09/09/2022 09:18

Will there ever be a ruling Queen again as I assume the institution will change?

Yes, I agree this is an important factor.

I think it may change after the funeral - I doubt that The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will start using the Cornwall title until after the funeral (though it passed instantly and automatically), and I don't expect any announcement on whether the new Prince Archie and Princess Lili will use those styles (that again became theirs instantly and automatically when they became grandchildren of a monarch in the male line) or be like the Wessexes whose parents did not choose to use them and which Lady Louise has also so far chosen not to use since she came of age and now gets to decide for herself.

William and Catherine (at least as far as their twitter account goes) are using the Cornwall title now.

Thanks - I'm mildly surprised, but it's theirs to use

And they must be going with the 'monarchy changes instantly' rather than 'aristocracy has changed but use is stayed until after the funeral'

Which prob makes my expectation that adding (unprecedentedly??) the word 'Consort' is a temporary measure, totally wrong

Costacoffeeplease · 09/09/2022 09:30

I’m fairly ambivalent about having a royal family but given the absolute bellends that have been elected in the past decade or so, I think an elected head of state would be worse. Would you prefer Johnson? Richard Branson? The mind boggles.

AnnunciataZ · 09/09/2022 09:46

And we might've gotten stuck with an Andrew and not an Elizabeth. But you can vote out elected officials, not so much a hereditary monarch.
