Future King

Sadly, it looks like we'll soon have a new monarch, King Charles, and presumably he'll be known by that title immediately.

Will the Duchess of Cornwall be Queen Camilla straight away?

She won't be HM Queen Camilla unless she outlives him. She'll be HM The Queen.

Travis1 · 08/09/2022 15:42

\Thought she was going to be queen consort or something like that?

AnnunciataZ · 08/09/2022 15:49

She will be queen consort but consorts are still called HM The Queen, as was the Queen Mother when George VI was alive and Queens Mary and Alexandra before her.

It will seem strange to have a King and Queen.

Charles will become king immediately on the death of the Queen. An accession court will convene, and he will be proclaimed King. His name is Charles Philip Arthur George. He may become King Charles III or George VII (It has been suggested previously that Charles preferred George). Camilla will be known as Queen Consort in a similar way to Queen Elizabeth the Queen mother.

AnnunciataZ · 08/09/2022 16:06

Her role will be queen consort but that won't be her title.

DownNative · 08/09/2022 16:10

"Queen Consort" refers to the spouse of a ruling king and would mean "Queen Camilla" as her future title."

Prince Charles will be declared as King by the UK Government the day after the Queen's passing.

KillingMeDeftly · 08/09/2022 16:20

No, they've got that wrong. Her official title will be HM The Queen, though I'm sure people will call her Queen Camilla.

SirCharlesRainier · 08/09/2022 16:24

Yes, both Charles becoming King and Camilla becoming Queen will happen;(have happened?) at the moment of QEII's death. As PP said, it may take time to be proclaimed but it will happen instantaneously. "The Queen is dead; long live the King".

I don’t think that’s correct. She will not be “The Queen”. She will be Queen Consort so Her Majesty Queen Camilla like the Queen Mother was Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth when her husband became King.

Thats my understanding anyway and for various reasons I had to learn a lot of (mostly useless) stuff about titles, etiquette etc.

KillingMeDeftly · 08/09/2022 16:30

No, the queen mother was HM The Queen while her husband was alive. She would've been HM Queen Elizabeth once he passed away but she decided to add the Queen Mother to her title, presumably as her daughter had the same name as her and her MiL was still alive.

Antarcticant · 08/09/2022 16:31

At one stage it was thought Charles might take the regnal name of George VII.

The Queen Mother wasn't routinely known as Queen Consort (although that was her role) - people referred to them, in formal and informal circumstances alike, as the King and Queen, just as they did with previous Queen Consorts.

"HM the Queen visited bombsites in the East End today" etc, not "HM the Queen Consort..."

Camilla might well end up being referred to as Consort (as a sop to overemotional Diana obsessives) but that would be a break with previous practice, not the continuation of it.

JenniferBarkley · 08/09/2022 16:47

Presumably William wouldn't have named his eldest George if that was Charles's plan.

They like 'continuity' though.

FayeGovan · 08/09/2022 16:51

I think William and Kate would be better.

KillingMeDeftly · 08/09/2022 17:01

Alas that isn't how a hereditary monarchy works! And I doubt they'd want it right now, not while their kids are still so young.

I think someone elected would be better, but alas.

bellinisurge · 08/09/2022 17:09

She'll be Queen Consort. There was a whole lthing because they are both divorcees.

KangFang · 08/09/2022 18:31

The Queen has died.

PiffleWiffleWoozle · 08/09/2022 18:35

Charles is now King.

The notice just put on the gate at Buckingham refers to her as Queen Consort.

Suzi888 · 08/09/2022 18:55

I didn’t think camilla would ever hold the title of queen.

MarshaBradyo · 08/09/2022 18:56

I wouldn’t want William

Fine with Charles as King
