You can pick ONLY one. I thought I knew... but today everything changed.

Toasted croissant
Smashed avocado on one side (NOT guacamole, plain smashed avocado)
Sharp white cheddar (lightly broiled) on the other

I'm out of croissants till Saturday, I don't know how I'll make it till then.

What's your desert island sandwich?

My local cafe makes a three cheese and caramelised onion panini. All beautifully melted with bistro coleslaw and salad. OMG. What time do they open? 😋

mawbroon · 08/09/2022 02:07

White bread, thick butter and a packet of salt n vinegar McCoy's crisps.

sausage767 · 08/09/2022 02:10

Classic Reuben.

Although my husband made an amazing sandwich on the weekend.. swiss cheese, ham and leftover bearnaise sauce, on turkish bread. Pan toasted.

Furries · 08/09/2022 02:14

French bread. Chicken that’s been roasted and shredded. Mix a portion in with broken up bits of M&S crispy bacon strips, broken up Parmesan shavings and shredded lettuce - all mixed together with Caesar salad dressing. It’s not a regular, it’s a treat, but it’s my favourite comfort food.

avamiah · 08/09/2022 02:16

White bread slightly toasted in toaster then bring it out and

  1. put sliced cheddar cheese on
  2. chopped onions
  3. chopped tomatoes Then put it under the grill for about 30 seconds ( checking that the cheese is fully melted and onions and tomatoes look cooked)
  4. put Tomato ketchup on ( if you like it) and Enjoy .

My dad used to make this for me when I was a kid and 30 years later I’m making it for my kid( daughter) .

Oh my gosh. These sound amazing.

@MarshaMelrose it's crucial for me to know if the coleslaw is inside or outside the sandwich?

@sausage767 do you make your own? We've started making them for st Patrick's day, I love it!

@Furries if you put it in a wrap that makes it healthy ;)

@mawbroon crisps (chips this side of the pond) make any sandwich better!

@avamiah that sounds like the ultimate nostalgia/comfort food! I love recipes like that

Outside. It's cold, and tangy but sweet and I like to spread it on the hot panini so that each mouthful contains the warm melting cheese with the sweet caramelised onion contrasted against the tangy cold coleslaw.

Oh, oh, oh, thinking about is getting me very, maybe too, excited here!! 🤭

Kerrrmieee · 08/09/2022 02:36

Cheap sliced white, creamy coleslaw and jalapenos.

avamiah · 08/09/2022 02:39

@ZuzuSusu

Thank you, that means a lot .

I hope you try it ( with or without the ketchup)

I was going to say ‘fish finger’ but I feel a bit low brow now reading the replies.

White bread, butter, 4 fish fingers inside with ketchup and one on top to eat on the way from the kitchen to the dining table as a little reward.

sausage767 · 08/09/2022 03:29

@ZuzuSusu homemade Reuben? Yes, but it's hard to really replicate a classic deli Reuben. Well I don't make it, my husband does!

sausage767 · 08/09/2022 03:30

One of my favourite quick treats is 2 pieces of toast, buttered, with sliced tasty cheese and sliced canned beetroot. Do you have canned beetroot or is that just an Aussie thing?

Myshitisreal · 08/09/2022 04:27

Homemade Sourdough. My version of Coronation chicken - cooked chicken or quorn, mayo, curry powder, I like to add dry fried nuts and seeds chopped for a bit of crunch. Finely chopped apricot or cranberry is also nice. You tend to need more curry powder than you think. I just mix, taste, add more until it tastes like something you like. Keeps for a few days if you make a batch up too. (3days if it's the same day as chicken cooked day)

ZuzuSusu · 08/09/2022 04:47

@KateBushyTail I LOVE fish fingers, doing them on a sandwich isn't as common here (why though?!) I will have to try!

@sausage767 we have canned beets but I've never had them in a sandwich!

@Myshitisreal that sounds very like a recipe I love, Ina Garten's curry chicken salad, I think she makes it with raisins but I like it with cut red grapes and roasted cashews.

Soft white bread, salted butter, thick cut ham, strong cheddar and a table spoon of quality coleslaw.....

EllaPaella · 08/09/2022 05:59

Cheese savory with ready salted crisps squidged in between slices.

2018SoFarSoGreat · 08/09/2022 06:25

Toasted chiabata roll, avacado smashed on both sides. Slice a just set boiled egg and heavy sprinkle with red pepper flakes.

So good. That's breakfast planned!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 08/09/2022 06:46

Similar to OP, avocado and blue cheese. Granary bread. Spinach and/or tomatoes/fresh tomatoes.

Cosycover · 08/09/2022 06:51

MasterOfOne · 08/09/2022 04:50

Soft white bread, salted butter, thick cut ham, strong cheddar and a table spoon of quality coleslaw.....

This is mine too.

Simple but effective.
And for some reason tastes better if someone else makes it for me.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 08/09/2022 06:54

Tuna and mayo with sweetcorn in it. Good pinch of cayenne pepper for piquancy. On proper nasty white sliced toastie loaf bread. With some prawn cocktail crisps to maintain the fish theme.

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 08/09/2022 07:31

Local cafe does a roast pork toastie.

Thick white bread, big chunks of roast pork that they roast on-site fresh each day, apple sauce, cheese, spring onion. All toasted with plenty of butter so it's golden and crispy with cheese leaking out the side. Served with a big chunk of pork crackling.

stuntbubbles · 08/09/2022 07:37

Roast chicken on thick white farmhouse bread, buttered with French butter; then with mayonnaise on one side with the roasted lemons and garlic from the chicken stirred in and whatever herbs to hand, often tarragon, and capers; Dijon mustard on the other side; pickled jalapeños and chopped cornichons; big handful of chopped romaine or rocket. Requires a knife and fork to eat, and a napkin, if you’ve done it right.

RainbowToes · 08/09/2022 07:42

French stick with thick layers of mayonnaise and green pesto..then a filling of roasted chicken breast and shredded lettuce. Bit of black pepper.

AuntieMarys · 08/09/2022 07:44

Cheese and onion
