Parents of tall girls, when did they slow down growth wise?

Asking because surely she can't keep growing upwards at the same rate for much longer?!

DD is 7, 8 at the end of November and is over the 100th centile for height ( has been since about 2 ). She's 135cm, size 3 feet which are the same as mine and a good head above every other girl in her class. She's very slight though, I have to take her clothes in or buy slim fit. Is there a point she'll peak and growth will slow down?

Mine is almost 5ft 7 at the age of 12 with size 7 feet and is showing no signs of stopping growing yet.. she has larger feet and is taller then me.. costs me a fortune in clothes 😭

My DD is similar height and age. She's the tallest in her class but it doesn't concern me in any way. What are you worried about?

I'm worried about how much money I'm spending on clothes and footwear over the next few years 😁

It's not a concern, just general intrigue. As a short woman who has always been short with only short women in the family, this is all new to me.

I was just like that, I was 4 foot 6 when I was 8 and was always the tallest, was a tall toddler, and a tall child right until I hit the lofty height of 5 foot 3 when I was 10 and never grew again.

Ah, I see. Yes, I must admit it's a pain every time she goes up in shoe size as there are multiple shoes to replace (school shoes, trainers etc). I tend to buy age 9/10 stuff at the mo as it's got growing room and hopefully they'll last longer.

I am also short, so this is new to me too :) I think she will have outgrown me by the time she starts secondary.

My dd at 7 wore age 12 clothes, size 5 feet and was head and shoulders above her classmates. Also very slim.

She hit puberty early and her growth has slowed down. She had size 8 feet in year 5, so age 9-10, she’s now 13 and they haven’t grown since. She’s 5ft 8 but she’s only grown about an inch in the past year.

My other dd is 7, wearing age 10 clothes and size 2 feet, so still tall but not as tall as her sister at the same age. She’s the tallest in her class but doesn’t stand out. Her rate of growth seems to be getting faster all the time!

My daughters both shot up (sometimes multiple centimetres just a few months) for a couple of years and then mostly stopped growing as soon as puberty established itself. They were really tall at some point and now are fairly average. I never checked them against official charts so can't comment on that.

Usually girls stop growing about 18 months after they get their period.

I'm interested to read people's replies too. My DD is 14 and recently been investigated by orthopaedics and cardiology for possible Marfans Syndrome. Investigations have all been reassuring thankfully and although she ticks some boxes there are plenty that she doesn't, so she will be reviewed again in 2 years and then discharged if all still well. Hopefully she is just a naturally very tall, slim person.

Anyway, she is 180cm tall (99.6th centile for height) and 62kg (75th centile) for weight. I have been saying "surely she must stop growing soon!" since she was about 4! I asked the orthopaedic surgeon who reviewed her spine x-rays and MRI and he said by looking at her growth plates he felt that she was nearing the end of growth but not quite there yet!

She's a keen netball player and always in demand on the teams due to her height. We love to go and watch professional netball and always laugh that DD seems quite short in comparison to some of the players! It certainly puts things in perspective and helps her feel more "normal" when all her friends are a foot or more shorter than her!

I was 5 ft 8 at 11, stopped at 5 ft 10 at 12.

I stopped growing at 12. I am 5 11 and have size 6 feet.

Also just to add, feet have grown a size in the past few months. We went to get new trainers and was astounded she had to get an 8.5 but I suppose it's pretty much in proportion with her height.

Clothes-wise because she is very slim she wears adult size XS or S and just makes sure she picks items that are designed long in length on the arms, torso and legs. She has been wearing the same clothes size for about 3 years now even though she has grown taller in that time.

My dd12 is 5ft 9. She's taller than me and I'm quite tall. Her feet are size EU42. She really wants to stop growing. 😔She's forever stooping down to talk with friends and her back hurts!

DD2 has always been tall; she stopped growing at about 17 when she hit 6ft 2 - about 185cm I think? She has always had smallish feet though, they stopped at 6.5 and haven’t grown since she was 16. We are all tall but she’s the tallest!

And yes, shoes!!! She grew out of children's shoes many years ago - so expensive!

I was 5' 8" at 11. I stopped at about 13/14 at 5' 11". I was always tall.
They say girls stop growing within two years of getting their period. My own daughter got hers at 11 and stopped growing (upwards) at 12 at 5' 6.5". She's filled out a bit since then, going from a size 10 to a 12, but no increase in height (she's 17 now).

I grew like a weed as a child. I stopped growing not long after starting secondary school so prob about 11-12

Not sure how accurate that is - I was late and am very tall, daughter was earlier and is ‘normal’ height 🤷‍♀️

DD was always the tallest in her class throughout primary school. When she went to secondary school I bought her school uniform slightly on the large size and she has just done her GCSEs and was still wearing the same, slightly large uniform! So she stopped growing (both body and feet) in year 7. She started her periods in year 7 too when she was 12.5 years. She is 5ft 8 with size 7 feet.

My daughter who is 7, turning 8 in Dec is 145cm… completely off the charts. I’ve taken her to the doctor twice about it but they weren’t concerned. She’s also very slight!

My GD was 5ft 8in and size 7 shoes at 11 and the tallest in her primary school. She hasn't grown since.

I started my periods in year 6 and stopped growing shortly afterwards. I felt enormous when I started secondary school. I am about 5 foot 2.

DD was in size 7 shoes before she was 10, still in size 7 (and long enough arms for a full size violin at her 10th birthday). Was tall all through primary but stopped growing before she turned 12 we think, ended up about 5'7 or 8 and the "little one" in our family. I didn't go up to a full size violin till age 11, grew fastest from 11.5 to 13 and probably no more after that. My sister was I think similar; we both ended up a little taller than our father (5'11/5'11.5 vs 5'10).

Parents/grandparents ages at puberty can give some clues. In general taller girls will hit puberty a little earlier than smaller ones. Later puberty will tend to lead to greater final height as children typically keep growing at a slow rate pre-puberty then gain a similar amount during puberty whether it is early or late.

Dd1 was 'tall' until some point in y7. She's now on the shorter side at 5'3" ish. Taller than me though! She's nearly 15 and her feet stopped growing in Y6. Which has been good for our bank balances as she can wear shoes for ages!

Dd2, otoh, has just started y7 and is 5'4". Maybe taller. All I know is that she was the same height as her sister at the start of the summer and now isn't. She has the longest legs. Her school trousers are age 14-15 and already verging on short.

Oh and I too was 'tall'.

Until I got to 13.

I'm the same height now 30 years later.
