Parents of tall girls, when did they slow down growth wise?

Asking because surely she can't keep growing upwards at the same rate for much longer?!

DD is 7, 8 at the end of November and is over the 100th centile for height ( has been since about 2 ). She's 135cm, size 3 feet which are the same as mine and a good head above every other girl in her class. She's very slight though, I have to take her clothes in or buy slim fit. Is there a point she'll peak and growth will slow down?

My daughter is the same as yours but nowhere near THe tallest ! She’s actually average!

Fiveinthebed22 · 04/09/2022 17:17

My DD was the same always at least a head taller than anyone in her year, she got her period at 10 and stopped growing a year later so has ended up at 5ft 5 with size 7 feet. Everyone was sure she would end up 6ft!

DramaAlpaca · 04/09/2022 17:24

I started my periods at 13, when I was about 5'3. That year I grew like a weed, stretching to 5'8, then another two inches over the next few years. I finally stopped growing at 18, at 5'10. So basically, I continued growing a lot after puberty.

My best friend and I were the tallest in our class in year seven. She stopped at that height and is still petite now whereas I kept growing and got to 5 ft 10 by about 13 5 before I stopped, always super skinny despite eating like a racehorse (most definitely not the case these days). I was loftier than many for a while but a lot caught up mostly with me eventually

TheStarOnTheChristmasTree · 04/09/2022 17:30

DD1 stopped growing at 5 ft 7 age 12 and DD3 stopped growing at 5 ft 11 age 13, both size 6 feet

DeclansAFeckingDream · 04/09/2022 17:38

DD was 5'8 by 14 and hasn't grown any more. She's 16 now.

MrsArrDee · 04/09/2022 17:38

DD is 6 but I'm certain that she'll take after me. She's head and shoulders above her class mates, size 2 feet, and in 9 - 10 (and sometimes 10 - 11) clothes. By the time I started secondary school I was my full height and shoe size. I suspect she'll be a couple of inches taller than me though.

RandomMess · 04/09/2022 17:48

Mine got to 5' 7" by 12 then stopped.

MIL and SIL were 5'10 and 5'9 and stopped growing at 11.

Claysta · 04/09/2022 17:54

I’m 6ft 2 and my DD (11 - just started year 7) has suddenly shot up and overtaken her older brother. I’m hoping she doesn’t shoot past me .. I did my main growing first few years at secondary.

BeanieTeen · 04/09/2022 17:58

I don’t have a tall girl but I was a tall girl. I remember we all measured ourselves in maths once in year 8 - so when I was 12. I’m still the same height - so presumably stopped growing then.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 04/09/2022 18:05

DD is 10 (11 in 6 weeks), 5'4", size 8 feet and has always been tall amongst her peers. She just got her periods last month, so we'll see what the impact of that is.

I grew from 5'2", when I started secondary school, to 5'8" /size 9 feet by the end of Y7. I was relatively tall until I was 16, when everyone else caught me up!

ALongHardWinter · 04/09/2022 18:09

My DD (now grown up and 37 years old) was 5 ft 6 in tall when she was 12. Between then and when she was nearly 16,she grew another 3.5 inches, making her 5 ft 9.5 in now.

Crocwok · 04/09/2022 18:17

I am 5'11 and stopped growing when I was 11. I was by far the tallest girl until about year 9 when some others caught up. I did have to have check ups though where my height was monitored but not really sure why and doubt it's a thing now hah. I wouldn't worry though.

Rosecoffeecup · 04/09/2022 18:18

I stopped growing at 14 I reckon, I'm 5ft 10. I was a long baby (63cm at birth) and was always a tall child...I remember I was 155cm when measured in Year 4.

AffIt · 04/09/2022 18:25

I was 5'6" at 12, stopped at my adult height of 5'8" (shoe size 8.5) at 17, but I was a total outlier and the only reason my height was measured so accurately was that I had to have a spinal operation that was dependent on my having stopped growing (it crept up by micro measurements).

I believe most women achieve their full adult height within two years of puberty starting.

NiqueNique · 04/09/2022 18:27

Yes it’s generally somewhere between 18-24 months.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 04/09/2022 18:31

I was a tall child. My parents are both tall and based on the theory that you should be half your height by the age of 2, I was due to be over 6ft. I am 5ft 5”. I was significantly taller than the majority of my class in Y6 and then puberty hit and I stopped growing. If I wasn’t considerably wider now, I’d fit into my old uniform.

My daughters are both tall for their age. DD1(8) hasn’t outgrown me yet but I don’t think it will be long. She’s in 9-10 clothing and already those trousers are starting to get a bit short and eating like she’s about to shoot up again but I’m having to take them in at the waist because she’s so slim. DD2(nearly 2) is giant. At the same age, she was around 20cm taller than her cousin. My DH is 6ft and one of the shorter members of his family so it won’t surprise me if they stop growing at 11 like me or keep going until they’re 6ft like my DH.

NiqueNique · 04/09/2022 18:40

It’s half your height by 18 months for girls, IIRC.

PaperMonster · 04/09/2022 18:42

My daughter was that height when she was 8 but I never thought of her as tall. This year though (11) she’s absolutely shot up! She’s really tall (no idea what her height actually is though). Thankfully her feet haven’t caught up with her height!! So, goodness knows when it ends!!

Kite22 · 04/09/2022 20:01

Er.... my dd is 21 soon. I swear she has grown taller over the last couple of years at University.
That said, she wasn't any more than average height at Primary school / early teens.
I think they all have their growth spurts at different stages.

NiqueNique · 04/09/2022 20:08

Of course there will always be outliers. However for most children there are generalised norms within which they will fall.

Or you could be shrinking! Grin Smile

fortifiedwithtea · 04/09/2022 20:09

Can’t remember where I heard it or read it but girls are supposed to only grow 2” after periods start.

although I disproved that by growing a final half inch at 17 bringing me to 5’7” .

Racingadmin · 04/09/2022 20:16

Dd was a late developer and has her final growth spurt at 16/17. Didn't start periods until 16

She's now 5ft 10 with size 8 feet . Her legs are incredibly long. Sat down she's the same height as her 5ft 4 best friend then she stand up and towers over her

CatLadyDrinksGin · 04/09/2022 20:17

Dd was still growing in height 4 years after her periods started. Feet haven’t grown since the year before the periods started!

reluctantbrit · 04/09/2022 20:18

DD slowed down when she was 13/14. Still growing at 15 but more like 2cm a year maybe. Before that she was one of the tallest in her class despite having average height parents but I am the odd one out in the family, the majority are 6ft something (male and female).

She is now 5.6ft and I don't think there will be a lot more.

I had more issues as she moved from average weight to skinny so lots of bottoms needed replacing, a portion was due to puppy fat redistribution, the rest was due stress and anxiety.
