Where are we buying our Children's winter coats ?

lovelilies · 02/09/2022 08:53

DC both need winter coats.
DS is 8 and DD is 6.
We walk to school so must be warm and waterproof, able to wear a backpack over it.
We sometimes cycle or scooter to school so needs to be flexible and easy to move in.
So far I've never found one that meets all our needs! Especially as they often get muddy and after a couple of washes even with the nikwax stuff, they lose their waterproofing.

Any recommendations? 🙏🏼

I always get mine from Next, Asda or trespass. Had some from TU and Matalan which didn't last as well.

Patagonia. Once out of baby years I get 2 years of heavy use out of them and then hand them down as they still look pristine, and if for some reason they don’t then they can apparently be repaired.

I have an adult Patagonia parka that is going into its 22nd winter!!!!

Polarn o Pyret, Dridiksons and Tog 24 are all fabulous coats but expensive. That said they can be passed down and then sold, they wash and wear really well.

Mountain Warehouse have some huge discounts

TheTeddyBears · 02/09/2022 10:01

I often go for river island but they aren't as nice this year. I've seen some Lipsy ones online from next that look nice but I saw a beautiful Ted baker one in the next store last week so I think we will go for that. It's a bit pricey but they are always great quality and can get passed down to my younger daughter too.

Vinted - regatta waterproof thick coat £10

CheeseMaiden · 02/09/2022 10:14

Another shout out for Vinted!
got DD a lovely thick Boden coat for £8, I also sell the things she’s grown out of on there. Her barely worn toddler shoes basically paid for the coat!

I live in a very cold place. Patagonia and Lands End are where we get kids' coats from. I believe both ship to the UK (we are in the US). I am a fan of 3 in 1 jackets with a fleece or down layer on the inside and a waterproof layer on the outside.

WonderingWanda · 02/09/2022 10:19

Warm waterproof coats are quite hard to come by. All the proper technical ones tend to be thin and you wear layers of fleece with them. The nice puffy warm coats for kids tend not to be waterproof...or not fully. The Regatta ones are OK but as you say need reproofing. We got a nice coat from John Lewis last year that was on the large size so will fit this year too and then we take Umbrellas on the school run. Have a separate thin waterproof and fleece for weekends / outdoorsy stuff.

Harridan1981 · 02/09/2022 10:21

Normally Lands End when that age.

Now slightly older we tend to have 2, a lightweight puffa type from M&S or Mountain Warehouse, and a heavier weight Trespass or Regatta

MinnieMountain · 02/09/2022 10:22

Lego ski jackets.

Butterdishtea · 02/09/2022 10:22

I've found Boden Sherpa most successful.

Mountain Warehouse, Trespass. Waterproof and warm but practical too.

Downside is their dull dark colours for boys (they could pick the pink ones of course) - children need to be visible in their winter coats, a couple of reflector strips on a few is the best they seem to do. Really annoys me.

SparrowsNest · 02/09/2022 10:27

Mountain Warehouse

SunflowerDuck · 02/09/2022 10:32

Another Mountain Warehouse fan here. They have them on "full price" for a while then they always reduce them so we only buy the reduced price.

Bought a 3 in 1 Winter coat and a thinner waterproof for £50ish quid well impressed.`

Greenstar22 · 02/09/2022 10:37

Got mine regatta parkas after last years Next ones were not waterproof as advertised🙄

Waitingforever123 · 02/09/2022 10:42

Dc3 will be wearing a landsend hand me down (probably on its 6th winter and doing well).
Just bought dc2 a la roudete coat (half price sale). Looks great really thick was £36. Says delivery taking longer but recieved in 4 days. Was very happy.

KindergartenKop · 02/09/2022 10:45

Vertbaudet ski coat. Waterproof and warm. £40. Not sludge coloured.

ThreeRingCircus · 02/09/2022 10:54

We always go to Mountain Warehouse, Trespass or Regatta but this year with money being tighter I bought a Mountain Warehouse coat for DD1 on Vinted for £5 and it's in perfect condition. I'm converted!

Laquila · 02/09/2022 10:58

La Resource/Vertbaudet is a good call.

I usually buy the Boden all-weather waterproof ski jacket type one on eBay. It's very expensive new but I can usually get one second-hand in good nick for £25ish, and given that it'll do two kids for me it's good value.

It's a version of this one: www.boden.co.uk/en-gb/all-weather-waterproof-jacket-multi-colourblock/sty-b1966-nav

HalfBloodPrincess · 02/09/2022 11:02

Frugi ski coats. I buy them in the spring sale in the next sizes up for the following winter.

glamourousindierockandroll · 02/09/2022 11:05

Vinted. I try and pay about £30 for used waterproof winter coats that would have been £80-100 new.

Scarecrowrowboat · 02/09/2022 11:24

Another for Vinted. Got a nearly new Next winter coat for my son for £10 inc post.
