Where are we buying our Children's winter coats ?

DC both need winter coats.
DS is 8 and DD is 6.
We walk to school so must be warm and waterproof, able to wear a backpack over it.
We sometimes cycle or scooter to school so needs to be flexible and easy to move in.
So far I've never found one that meets all our needs! Especially as they often get muddy and after a couple of washes even with the nikwax stuff, they lose their waterproofing.

Any recommendations? 🙏🏼

Mountain Warehouse, Regatta, Tog 24, Helly Hansen.

I have bought coats from so many places ocer the years, from super cheap to very expensive and the two clear best by far are George at Asda and M&S stormwear.

Problem is DD is very fussy about what her coats look like so lets hope one of them do one she likes this year.

LER83 · 02/09/2022 20:58

This year I've bought Joules for dd age 10, and going to get either a Marks and Spencer one or Lands End for ds age 7. Very hard to get nice, decent, fully waterproof coats!

I always buy my twins Boden parkas. They are waterproof and for temperatures up to -15 so really warm. They are pricey so I buy a size bigger and they last 2/3 seasons and sell on for around £20 as they are in demand. The quality is fab so they look great after all that wear.

optimisticdogmum · 02/09/2022 21:13

Just got ours from Vinted, great quality, hardly used and super cheap. Planning on selling last years coats on there too.

Fuckitydoodah · 02/09/2022 21:17

Doesn't particularly answer your question but another vote for trying Vinted. I've bought both my DC fat face winter coats for around £8 each. They're both in great condition.

DeathMetalMum · 02/09/2022 21:17

We had a few from outdoors shops when dc were younger and had trouble with zips breaking on a few. Switched to M&S after having hand me down coats last both dd1&dd2 so three children.

Dd2 has had two years from her sainsbury's coat but isn't really in good enough condition to pass on.

Everyone recommending vinted, is it much different to eBay?

Tallulasdancingshoes · 02/09/2022 21:47

I usually get trespass or regatta for school coats.

Twillseeker · 02/09/2022 21:55

I buy mine from Boden, very expensive to start with but we usually get 2 years out of them, they wash very well and then I can always sell them on for a reasonable price.

Grumbleton · 02/09/2022 22:10

Didrikson, I hand mine down through two DC and have had up to 4 years out of one coat. My DDs Lands End coat is trashed after 1 year so so I’m going back to Didrikson again this year for her too this year.

PollyEsther · 02/09/2022 22:14

DS3 has one from Marks and Spencer that is virtually identical to the one he had last year. He adores it.

DD's is from Asda and I actually think it's better quality than DS's. It's got more filling/padding and definitely very waterproof: I had to wash the arms earlier as they were grubby and there wasn't a hint of damp on the inner even though I soaked the outer.

Older DSs don't wear coats because they are idiots teenagers. They do own them though!

eurochick · 02/09/2022 22:22

I've rated Boden, Uniqlo and Didrikson for kids coats.

TheMildManneredMilitant · 02/09/2022 22:27

Lands End, the ones with the detachable inner fleece. They are ££ but I've always got 2 winters out of them and very well made. They usually have 40% codes off in early autumn.

Mrsfussypants1 · 02/09/2022 22:45

This years school coat is from m&s, it's a longline stormwear one, she chose it herself in a blue/teal colour. One of my current sparks offers is 20% off kids day wear so the ££s saved paid for a couple of hats. Also have another coat I'd picked up in Next sale at the start of the year for this winter. Often have to chuck a coat in the washer mid week that gets beyond being sponged down (no matter how dark) and getting them dried in time for school has been an issue, even more so this year.

Mrsfussypants1 · 02/09/2022 22:47

Both coats will be worn out of school to, and hopefully last till next year as they've another of growing room.

MondayMoan · 02/09/2022 22:57

My DD 6 and 8 got theirs from Asda.

mrsfeatherbottom · 02/09/2022 23:07

Decathlon is our go to place for coats

PinkButtercups · 02/09/2022 23:29

I also use Asda for coats for DS.

He's 3 and I find them to be really warm and love how they always have mittens attached. They wash great too and always come out looking like new.

I've recently purchased a wet weather jacket and dungaree type trousers for DS to walk to nursery in and it's all wool type/fleece inside the jacket which will also keep him warm in winter when it's raining.

ArtichokeAardvark · 02/09/2022 23:37

Lighthouse! No one ever seems to mention the brand but their waterproof coats are brilliant. The padded ones are really warm without being bulky, so great for scooting home after school. Nowhere near as expensive as Boden or Frugi, but similar styles.

AlwaysLatte · 02/09/2022 23:38

We used to buy them fromH&M or Go Outdoors. Both good value and good quality.

AlwaysLatte · 02/09/2022 23:39

I remember the make from go outdoors now, it was dare2B. Still looked new after the zillion things wash.

AlwaysLatte · 02/09/2022 23:40

Zillionth

You don't have to wait and watch as it's all on a buy now basis. If there's a few you like you can add them to your favourites to go back and easily look at. Easy to search by age, brand, colour etc. Most people seem to set sensible prices.

HappyAsASandboy · 03/09/2022 04:44

Not a coat recommendation, but a comment on the waterproofing ...

When you wash with Nikwax (TechWash?), do you follow that with the re-waterproofing product (TXDirect)? TechWash just washes it, and will remove the waterproofing eventually, so you need to re-waterproof with TXDirect each time you wash the coat. I have used TXDirect to re-waterproof caravan awnings, tents, coats, picnic blankets .... it makes the rain bead on the surface!
