I know it's bleak, but can we have a lovely autumn thread? There must be something to look forward to surely...

I know everything is really worrying and bleak at the moment but I thought there must be something we can look forward to about autumn coming.

I am looking forward to:

Borrowing ghost stories from the library (they don't seem the same in warmer weather and lighter nights!)

Wearing dresses, tights and boots (I never feel as smart in the summer)

Walks in a nearby forest, maybe collecting conkers and taking a 'picnic' of a flask of hot water to heat up hotdogs and a flask of hot chocolate

Hot ribena or some other cordial

Soup for lunch...and dinner if I can get away with it!

The gentle warming glow from some of the many candles that people think I want as gifts.

Anyone else trying to find things to look forward to?

I don’t love the shorter days and less sun but I’m moving somewhere with more outdoors space so I’ll join you on this one. Really looking forward to autumn walks!

HRTQueen · 28/08/2022 10:37

Changing to my winter duvet I really do get excited

yes reading mystery/spooky stories when it’s raining, windy and dark outside I agree just isn’t the same when it’s sweltering hot

walking on crunchy leaves 🍁

Daftasabroom · 28/08/2022 10:39

The blackberries, sloes and other hedgerow fruit are epic this year, and early, so get out there while you can!

Needhelp101 · 28/08/2022 10:40

I love an autumn thread!

Definitely soup. Lots of soup. And stews.

Kicking through piles of rustling leaves. A cliche, sorry.

Might be some good drama on the TV?

Over the last year I've made a concerted effort to get outside every morning (including eating porridge on the patio when it's perishing cold...neighboursprobablythinki am potty!). But my sleep has improved (apparently there is some science behind this) as has my MH.

Enjoy your new space!

Following for the Mumsnet Autumn Clichés - I love them! Smile

Good point! Need to find a new foraging spot. We live not far from a railway line and the blackberries through the fencing were amazing...and then network rail came along and cut them all down :(

The apples on our apple tree are getting fatter by the day. Anticipating crumbles with custard.

All the big dramas will be back on TV.

The dog will want to snuggle me after a cold walk again (she gets very standoffish in the heat of summer!).

Seed catalogues.

incognitopurple · 28/08/2022 11:03

Also looking forward to tights and boots, and a pumpkin spice latte!

Never tried the much mentioned pumpkin spiced latte. Maybe this will be the year!

Not having to look at all the ghastly topless men everywhere 🤮

PeonyRose80 · 28/08/2022 12:00

Autumn is our favourite season and I can’t wait. Much more excitement in the next few weeks as we are picking up our longed for GSD pup.
Lots of garden time, fluffy blankets (yes I said it) Stews, Cake baking mmmm

Roundlampshade · 28/08/2022 12:04

Yes to conkers - if only to place around my house and get rid of all them darned spiders!

Yes to wearing jumpers again. They hide a multitude of sins.

Yes to stews made out of the dodgy vegetables in the bottom drawer of the fridge. Note to Mumsnet: has anyone worked out the energy cost difference between 45 mins in the 180 degree oven or 4 hours in a slow cooker?

My local blackberries are awful, all dried up and bitter. The sloes are out though. I made a litre of sloe gin last December so it will soon be time to try that before I see if it’s worth making another batch.

Amen to that...

I like all seasons, but/so I am looking forward to autumn. I tried to buy new boots and tights but so far everything I've purchased has gone back, but I have a nice jumper from a summer sale and some nice cardigans that still feel new as they've only had one winter, looking forward to them!

TheCutter · 28/08/2022 12:39

Oh I adore autumn so much.

Looking forward to...

Hoodies and cosy hats

Hot coffee with whipped cream on top

Book writing curled up on the sofa, hearing the rain outside.

Murdoch mysteries

The colours outside

FourTeaFallOut · 28/08/2022 12:45

The return to flannel pjs and slipper boots...sexy, I know

Saucery · 28/08/2022 12:51

I went through my hand knitted cardigans and jumpers this week, unsealing them from moth-proof bags and having a Feel. Also sorted my hand knitted socks and have started making a new pair after a small cull of the old and bobbly.

Have decided to buy a pair of Solovair 8 hole boots. They used to make Dr Martens, the quality of which is rubbish since they stopped manufacturing them in the UK. Crunching through leaves will be amazing in them Grin

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 28/08/2022 12:52

I love all the seasons too but autumn can be such a treat, especially after a nice summer like this one has been in the SE. I like to decorate a bit for autumn. Got a couple of pumpkin candies from TKMaxx, some different cushions on the sofa. Autumnal duvet.
The local farm shop sells those ornamental gourds so I get some in a dish. Light all the candles and lamps.
Looking forward to bit more TV (hopefully Handmaids tale back although not very cheerful)
Grown one single pumpkin for my doorstep, it's not very big still though 😂
Give me more ideas!

Sportycustard · 28/08/2022 13:50

I've started a bit of autumn prep. Currently have an Anna Jones vegan chilli in the slow cooker. It'll make 2-3 meals for us, freezes well and will be useful for busy days.

Taking the dog for long walks in the countryside or along the beach. We have only managed to do short walks during the summer as the mad dog is a nut case who can’t control his excitement , runs around like a loony and then gets heat exhaustion.

MinnieMountain · 28/08/2022 14:14

Cooking with game meat.
Sleeping under a duvet.
Drinking sherry.

StealingYourWiFi · 28/08/2022 14:15

I had a pumpkin spice latte from Starbucks yesterday it was glorious! I’ve got all my autumn scent candles and pumpkin decorations to put out once back from my last summer holiday.

looking forward to wrapping up and going on long dog walks, she loves chasing the leaves. Then back home and cuddling on the sofa whilst watching my favourite YouTube channel (Allison Bickerstaff - she’s American but does the ‘fall’ and Christmas so so well, her videos are so relaxing and cosy) beef stew for dinner from the slow cooker with dumplings and then maybe an apple crumble.

i love autumnal clothes - jumpers, cardigans, leather jacket, boots, dresses and tights.

AchillesLastStand · 28/08/2022 14:17

I love walking to school in the morning and feeling the chill in the air as the autumn sets in. I’ve got cosy new boots that I can’t wait to try out. This morning I bought a furry covered hot water bottle and I can’t wait to get into bed with in with my snuggly duvet when the weather get colder. Also I love my autumn/winter candles. 🍁
