I know it's bleak, but can we have a lovely autumn thread? There must be something to look forward to surely...

I know everything is really worrying and bleak at the moment but I thought there must be something we can look forward to about autumn coming.

I am looking forward to:

Borrowing ghost stories from the library (they don't seem the same in warmer weather and lighter nights!)

Wearing dresses, tights and boots (I never feel as smart in the summer)

Walks in a nearby forest, maybe collecting conkers and taking a 'picnic' of a flask of hot water to heat up hotdogs and a flask of hot chocolate

Hot ribena or some other cordial

Soup for lunch...and dinner if I can get away with it!

The gentle warming glow from some of the many candles that people think I want as gifts.

Anyone else trying to find things to look forward to?

My 14mo DGD is just walking and I am looking forward to some leaf kicking in a few weeks.

mackthepony · 01/09/2022 19:53

Loving the hotdog idea!

stopthescammers · 01/09/2022 19:54

Hanging my autumn wreath on the front door and lighting all my candles!

jesusjoan · 01/09/2022 19:55

This is a lovely thread, thank you OP.

QuebecBagnet · 01/09/2022 19:56

I have some nice candles.
there’s quite a few tv programmes to look forward to, Bake off, hocus pocus 2, rings of power, handsmaid tale.

InFiveMins · 01/09/2022 19:59

I love autumn so much. Nothing better than reading a book on the couch under a blanket, and TV is always much better in the colder months. Looking forward to making lots of casseroles (we eat them none stop in autumn and winter), and can't wait for Halloween and bonfire night!

Never tried the much mentioned pumpkin spiced latte. Maybe this will be the year!

I had one at Starbucks today, it was surprisingly good. First Starbucks since before the first lockdown and I was rather expecting it to be like dishwater after 2+ years of coffee at home, but it was nicer than I remembered.

im not supposed to drink it (on a restricted diet for health reasons)

Noonoo88 · 01/09/2022 20:05

Books under a blanket are just bliss 🥰 getting the fire on, hot water bottles, a lovely hot bath when you're freezing cold, the list goes on! I've got a new baby, so I'm also looking forward to putting him in all the things I've crocheted for him. Bobble hats are also a fave, gives me an excuse to leave my hair in plaits all day 😁

We moved about a year ago back to London and the final bit of the renovation will happen next week (replacing back bifold doors, doors between kitchen and living and kitchen and hall with crittal style). The final part to realise my vision.
An unexpected surprise was when we removed the old Hebe bush out front and planted a dogwood - and surprise surprise some pumpkins have been growing!
So this October we will have home grown pumpkins as part of our Autumn display. Halloween is special around here with literally a 100 kids coming to the door.
I grew up in New England and love Autumn. The crisp cold air, the fog, the scarves and woolies and my gas fire (the last thing I will give up)! Plus the countdown to Christmas! Love it!

Inextremis · 01/09/2022 20:08

Sprouts coming into season :)
The smell of woodsmoke and turf (I'm in Ireland) in the air
Stews with dumplings
Hot whiskies
Getting into my (fake) Oodies

Browntoastwithbutter · 01/09/2022 20:15

Dresses and tights!!!

VittysCardigan · 01/09/2022 20:16

Just thought of another one, I live in Somerset and the carnival will be back after 2 years. Can't wait to watch with friends standing outside the pub all bundled up in hats & scarves.

VittysCardigan · 01/09/2022 20:19

For those who have never seen it

BuddhaAtSea · 01/09/2022 20:24

I normally walk to work, but as the days grow shorter, I cycle. Love it, I cycle through a park and it’s misty and crunchy leaves everywhere and some pretty amazing sunrises.

Turning on lamps and fairy lights and candles when I get in from work and warming up soups and chillies. I have fairy lights on timer, so they’re on when I get in.

I just bought a heated throw, so I’m looking forward to snuggling under, with the dog and a book.

Long cold walks with friends and then coming home to some hot chocolate and some cake, or soup, or fresh bread dipped in baked Camembert.

Swimming in the sea. In October, the sea is at it’s warmest. Also, swimming in the pool, followed by steam room/sauna.

Fireworks and guy fawkes night and the smell of bonfires.

Winter bedding and pyjamas and bed socks. Love my bed socks.

My huge cashmere wrap.

Wearing my Dryrobe. I bloody love it.

Seeing rosy cheeks and my breath.

Listening to the rain outside.

Titsflyingsouth · 01/09/2022 20:24

I'm looking forward to that cool, damp autumnal smell - damp leaves, wet grass, conkers mixed in with a little woodsmoke from chimneys....so refreshing after relentless sun for months.

Ohdofuckofdear · 01/09/2022 20:28

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 01/09/2022 20:30

I love ALL the seasons, I lived overseas for many years, where it was warmer, summer. Or colder/wet winter and it just slid from
one to the other. I missed the seasons and love having them again!!

Autumn is fabulous, so so much to enjoy, but my favourite thing is the colours of the leaves!!

VinylCafe · 01/09/2022 20:32

Needhelp101 · 28/08/2022 10:40

I love an autumn thread!

Definitely soup. Lots of soup. And stews.

Kicking through piles of rustling leaves. A cliche, sorry.

Might be some good drama on the TV?

Yes to the above!

Also, leaves changing to beautiful colours, the absence of mosquitoes, getting to wear my warm coat, crisp air, pumpkins, sunny weather yet cool enough to take long walks, and mostly no mosquitoes. Honesty, those bastards kept me in for a lot of the summer. I hate spraying chemicals on myself to keep them away and I get huge welts from their bites! I can't wait until they die.

Notmrsfitz · 01/09/2022 20:38

Not intending to add a dampener on anything but after the death of a relative early this year at a time when her life was awesome - I’m just appreciative of life itself of sunny days with cold drinks, rainy days when I can use my birthday umbrella a gift from my bestie, spraying my posh perfume every morning (bonus from son who has holiday job at the airport) and I intend to carry it on into autumn and winter too - the wearing of my bright red duffle coat that makes me feel like little red riding hood and look like a grandma trying to look like she’s young ….. yep drinking pumpkin latte and the smell of jacket potato cooking when I come home from work, thick gravy stews in the slow cooker with chunks of bread to sneakily dip in…. Hot baths and cold sheets that feel crispy as you get in bed.

Theres a lot to be thankful for even in times like this.

Furries · 01/09/2022 22:24

Personally, I’ll be counting down the days until Spring!

However, you might like diving into this thread - it even cheered me up a little bit last year 😂

Agree Notmrsfitz I like all the seasons really, and I'm happy that we have such a change in them.* *

Sportycustard · 02/09/2022 14:54

It's cooler today so I'm browsing coats. I've seen a few green ones which are very tempting. I love a bit of colour on grey overcast days.
