Anyone else used to love the Past Times shop? I miss it. It was like a museum but you could buy everything as it was just fake old stuff. I loved it as a child.

Ahh I used to buy all my mum's Christmas/birthday gifts there as a a pre-teen

blackpearwhitelilies · 28/08/2022 00:30

Loved it. I can still remember how it smelt! They had lovely cards as well and some nice clothes.

GremlinDolphin4 · 28/08/2022 00:34

Used to love Past Times too!

EsmaCannonball · 28/08/2022 00:48

They used to do these candles that smelled exactly like medieval churches. I wish I'd bought a lifetime's supply of them.

Nanny0gg · 28/08/2022 00:58

While you're all reminiscing, can anyone remember the name of this company? Just realised I haven't had a catalogue for ages so I assume it's another one gone.

Sold mostly jewellery - nice costume stuff, reasonably pricey - £60 for necklaces sometimes. Also handbags in all sorts of colours, again quite pricey as leather. Maybe some wool wraps too. So pages were colour-co-ordinated with the bags and jewellery

They did have some shops - used to be one in Cambridge. I really liked their stuff but could only afford occasionally.

Nanny was it Pia?

GallopingGreen · 28/08/2022 01:12

@Nanny0gg was it Pilgrim?

I’m wearing a silver and amber ring I got as a leaving present right now.

I'm 42 and I strongly suspect that you are too, or thereabouts.

Am 43 and absolutely loved both!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 28/08/2022 07:13

I loved it, too. Many years ago I bought a Christmas present for a young niece there - it was a money box, from the Beatrix Potter ‘the old woman who lived in a shoe’ illustration. A perfect 3D reproduction, Mother mouse, the little mouselets, the shoe, everything. ( I did put some money in it, too.)
Niece was maybe 8 then - she’s got a PhD now. Where did the time go??

I still listen to the three "Sophistication" CDs with the Art Deco lady on the cover!

I always used to lust after the silver "gimmel" ring with two hands that pulled apart to reveal a heart.

That ring was an absolute classic must have!!

Clawdy · 28/08/2022 07:44

With so many people missing it, makes you wonder why it had to end. Sad.

VenusClapTrap · 28/08/2022 07:45

Popping into Past Times during a Saturday afternoon trundling round town was such a joy.

For Victorian style cotton nighties, Powell Craft do some lovely ones.

I feel like the Museum Selection should be giving me commission 😂 The christmas stuff is lovely. Some of the quality can be a bit variable, so if you're ordering some thing for a gift give yourself a but of time!

Thanks for heads up!

I've just tried to get onto the Museum Selection website and can't get it to work - have we broken it?! Grin

Rhaenys · 28/08/2022 08:27

I loved it as a child also. I used to get a Christmas present from there most years from my grandmother.

Firty · 28/08/2022 08:39

I loved it too!

British Museum has some similar stuff, so does English Heritage and even Museum of Natural History. Think they all have online shops.

Hempy · 28/08/2022 08:42

Ah, this makes me smile. I just got the Museum Collection catalogue yesterday. I find it really relaxing to read through and love the Christmas things.

Hempy · 28/08/2022 08:43

Sorry Museum Selection 😬

Guilty as charged over here 🤣

ProfYaffle · 28/08/2022 08:58

Dh still wears one of their t shirts with an Oscar Wilde quote on it.

DessicatedWithering · 28/08/2022 09:02

My mother loved it, all her nighties and jewellery were from there, every birthday and xhristmas present. She died after it closed (no connection!) and was buried in her best nightie. DD still wears the jewellery.

Early 40s here and I loved that shop!!!

RobertsRadio · 28/08/2022 09:04

This was a nice trip down memory lane, makes me think of my lovely Mum.

ehb102 · 28/08/2022 09:10

I adored Past TImes. I'll take reproductions of beautiful things, thank you. Rennie Mackintosh mugs, lots of jewellery, funny little books. The quality of the things was nice.
