Disney Plus doing Jilly Cooper's Rivals

This is just the best news. I've been waiting for an adaptation of Rivals since I first fell in love with the bounder Rupert C-B in circa 1997.

But the question is who will play him? I can't think of anyone off the top of my head who can fill those boots - any suggestions?

Pleased to see I was wrong about the Guardian. They are normally so po-faced!

Right?!

The Show of the Year no less. Could’ve been clever and called it the (horse) show of the year but still.

Katherine Parkinson: ‘I look back at The IT Crowd and cringe’

Quite a lot about Lizzie Vereker in this:

Did we know this from the beginning? Is it true or have Sky News got their wires crossed because it's the first time I've come across someone saying this, but apparently this first season is just half of Rivals, with the entire novel being told across two seasons. (Is that really necessary?) (Season 2 has not yet been commissioned, and quite frankly I'm a little nervous about that since Dominic Treadwell-Collins himself said somewhere that Rivals was one of the last shows to be commissioned in the "high-budgeted era").They seem to be promoting the show a heck of a lot, but for Disney to want to plug money back into producing a costly show and for us to have a final product lets pray to the gods that it does well.

I've read reviews where the reviewer saw the whole thing, including how the last few episodes aren't as much fun because it's less sex/more winning the franchise. So I would assume Sky is wrong - maybe they're talking about a sequel using one of the other novels. If it's enough of a success, budget is much less of a problem 🙏

The whole thing feels so authentic! But I'm very torn as I'm still not sold on RCB - I still can't understand at all why they didn't cast a blond! But nevertheless I am so excited and look forward to being proved wrong on Rupert 🤞

I just can’t see him as Rupert! Or that guy with the moustache as Declan! And while I’m not a fan of David Tennant anyway he’s definitely not right for Tony. None of them are anything like they’re described in the book and it just puts me off.

"I've read reviews where the reviewer saw the whole thing, including how the last few episodes aren't as much fun because it's less sex/more winning the franchise."

Thats quite encouraging really. The first half of the book does have the majority of the sex scenes. The second half has much less sex because Rupert is lovestruck and the only two at it are Freddie and Lizzie.

I imagine and hope for Jilly Cooper's sake that they have an option on the later books.

I also read one review (can’t remember which now) which references Lady in Red as the big final song at an event, which happens right near the end of the book so I think they’ve got confused.

Notonthestairs · 15/10/2024 08:49

I haven't looked forward to a bit of TV this much for a long time (maybe series 3 of Line of Duty or Happy Valley!)
Fingers crossed we all find something of the novel in it.

Lady in Red is played at the ball where Taggie turns up dressed up and dances with Bas and Rupert gets the hump. I think it’s also played at Patrick’s birthday. Both of those are about half way through….

Ozgirl75 · 15/10/2024 10:05

Actually the ball where Taggie goes with Bas is towards the end, but I seem to think there’s still a lot to cover after that.

Notonthestairs · 15/10/2024 10:29

There is a bit about Cameron turning up to the Venturer assessment and then the award of the franchise. RCB goes to California and Taggie meets him at the airport which would make a nice ending.

I wouldnt be surprised if elements have been compressed a little.

greywinds · 15/10/2024 11:00

I'd have gone for acting quality over looking like the character - tennant looks like he's done a fab job, no adaptation ever manages to get all the casting right and Hassell looks like he's done a great job of the Rupert from what we've seen so far...

The earlier tv series had a more Rupert Rupert and it was a flop - it needed a big budget to have any hope of recreating luxury Cotswolds scenes.

Not long now...

mum2jakie · 16/10/2024 18:19

Two days to go!! I'm WFH on Friday so could potentially watch at lunchtime!

ChessieFL · 16/10/2024 19:05

I am thinking about trying to fit in an episode at lunchtime but I’m a bit worried that I won’t want to turn it off!

CHESSIE! I wonder if they'll do Polo next

I hope so!

Taggie at the ball with Bas is chapter 47 of 52 so right at the end. Patrick's birthday party is chapter 18 so about a third of the way through. So I'm guessing they do go all the way through the book, or at least I really hope they do.

bookworm14 · 16/10/2024 20:10

I don't work on Fridays so can potentially binge the lot! Very excited.

SquirrelSoShiny · 16/10/2024 21:42

Aaarrgghh I just watched the trailer and Rupert really isn't ringing any bells for me 😭

EthelbertaChickerel · 17/10/2024 07:30

Does anyone know what time it will be on Disney+ tomorrow? I can't find anything online would potentially stay up to start watching it at midnight

Okayornot · 17/10/2024 08:50

They've said they are dropping all the episodes at once so my assumption is they'll be there in the morning. Disney+ tends to release things at 8am in the UK.
