Just waved goodbye to perfectly good money through my own stupidity

I reckon dh & I have £120 in parking tickets heading our way. Dh drove mil in her car and didn't realise the car park had a time limit. I realised, but didn't tell dh, then misread my watch and was 20 mins over. Its got apr number plate recognition so think it's automatic. Feeling gutted, what a pair of idiots. We were shopping for cut price kids school shoes in the outlet 😭

Anyone else who might as well have waved goodbye to their money today?

No, but maybe this will make you feel better if you haven't seen it already: www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-55658942.amp

I forgot to pay the £2.50 Dartford Bridge toll because I was in a work hire car (not allowed to use my own) and I have the auto pay set up for my own car. The hire company will add on their admin fee, and I won’t even get the quick payment rebate so I’ll be looking at £120 too. A right royal cock up all round.

If it’s your first time not paying they are generally very good at waving the fine if you ring up and explain.

You will most likely get that cancelled quite easily if you put a claim in

Hope that works out for you @Letsnotargue !🍷

Parking fine whilst parked in my own space because I accidentally wasn’t centred and left an inch of rear wheel on a yellow line 🙄

lookslikeabombhitit · 21/08/2022 20:26

Months ago I borrowed my mum's car whilst DH and I stayed overnight in a hotel (so she could have my car with all car seats for DC). I thought car park was pay on departure... It wasn't. In my defence it was REALLY badly sign posted. Told mum and asked her to tell me when the £60 fine was posted to her so I could sort it out as I was going to challenge the full amount due to the signage and try to just pay for the correct amount of parking. She never let me know it arrived even though I kept asking about it.

Found out today that it's been escalated to debt collection agency and £60 is now £180 because she ignored the letters and lied to me. So yeah... That's £180 I haven't really got that I'll have to pay up before she gets a ccj.... 🤦🏼‍♀️😭

The hire car company pay it as soon as they get it and then invoice my company, who will make me pay. Because it’s a hire car there are too many steps in the chain to claim. As soon as I realised I contacted the Dartford Toll people and the hire car company but the hire car co didn’t respond for a week or so, by which time it was to say they’d already paid it and my charge would be in the post.

Not my stupidity bit my Mum has a blue badge so one day I took her to an appointment and parked in the diasabled bay and came back to a £60 ticket. I was absolutley fuming as I had the badge properly displayed in the window until my Mum says casually "Oh yeah it's about a year out of date I keep forgetting to renew it". Stupid me for not looking at the date but ffs she knew and still let me put it up knowing fine well I would get a fine.

Yes I did make her pay the fine and I then made sure she applied for the renewal and always check the bloody date before I take her anywhere using it.

ThirtyThreeTrees · 21/08/2022 20:35

I had to go to an event one evening.

Managed to get loads of parallel parking nearby.

Couldn't remember if it was free parking from 6pm or 7pm and due to sheer laziness decided to drive about 3 meters forward to get a little closer to the sign to check.

It clearly said free parking from 7pm to 7am so I waited in the car 10 mins so I wouldn't have to pay anything.

Delighted to get close and free parking, off I went.

Arrived back several hours later to a clamp on the car and €120 release fee.

I had failed to notice the coaches only part of the top of the sign and was actually in the free car parking zone only for I pulled forward the 3 meters to check the sign.

Failing to walk 3 meters to check a sign cost me €120. Absolutely sickened.

My mum sent me a bank transfer of £300 as an early Christmas present to pay off the rest of my holiday with my son for December.

She sent it to an old account that has been frozen whilst I pay off the overdraft. So I guess my Christmas present this year is a big chunk of my overdraft paid off at least!

whiteroseredrose · 21/08/2022 20:35

Rats. Just realised we forgot to pay for our return Dartford Crossing last week. It was a hellish journey and we forgot when we finally got home.

Oh no. Check the parking company as many now allow you to pay up to 24 hours after you leave. Hope you can and avoid the fee.

Matildahoney · 21/08/2022 20:43

Oh bugger, went to a concert at Wembley earlier this month & just realised I haven't paid whichever charge it is to get there! Will baby brain be accepted as an excuse 🤦🏻‍♀️

Twilightstarbright · 21/08/2022 20:48

If it’s any consolation, I forgot to pay the Dartford Crossing in June and still haven’t heard anything, so might be lucky?

Twospaniels · 21/08/2022 20:49

My friend’s elderly Mum got a parking ticket at Lidl a few years ago. My friend managed to get it cancelled as the signs in the car park are quite high up the post and her Mum is only 4’11” and couldn’t see them properly.

Ilikewinter · 21/08/2022 20:56

We had a work team building day which included a trip to the pub, I hate forced socialising but got to finish early so I made the effort to go! .....I drove and had 1 diet coke and made an early escape, 3 days later I got a £60 parking fine, didnt see any parking signs - it never occurred to me that the pub car park would be pay and display.
Ive vowed never to do work social events again!!!

mondaytosunday · 21/08/2022 20:58

I missed the renewal date for my annual street permit. I confused the end date with the date I moved in to my new house, when actually it was dated from when I bought the house the week before. I got a ticket a day until I realised. £65 a time.

sm40 · 21/08/2022 20:58

Got anyone who may ever need to use the dartford crossing register for autopay online.

I let my 5 year old son put the parking ticket in the car. He put in on the wrong way up. I didn't check. I got a ticket.
Luckily there was was code on the back too and the traffic warden had noted this and I managed to get off!
I didn't get off the ticket where I just left it in the boot of the car when I went to get the pushchair out 🤦‍♀️.

She should have paid the fine, who does that to their own daughter

LittleChilliBean · 21/08/2022 21:00

My local hospital has a carpark where you pay when you leave. I had an inkling that my waters had broken so went in for a check, turns out I was in labour and I ended up having to stay a few nights.

When we went to pay as we were heading home, the machine said we'd overstayed and had to pay the fine! That was a fun phone call to have when I was all hormonal! (In the end, we didn't have to pay).

Hopefully you don't get fined OP!

woodhill · 21/08/2022 21:00

Yes seen the end bit, glad she paid it

Dh lost his crypto wallet validator a couple of months ago but it only had a couple of hundred quid (not coins!) on it. That was stressful enough (and he eventually found it again).

ClottedCreamAndStrawberries · 21/08/2022 21:03

Feel so sorry for you @Reluctantadult and these companies are cowboys who won’t let you off whatever you say. My DH got a ticket for £100 earlier in the year. He went to a car park and the machine wasn’t working. He tried calling RinGo for 23 minutes (the calls were showing on his call log). Chip and pin and contactless also wasn’t working. He was basically trapped in the car park. He was flashed as having not paid by the ANPR and we tried and tried to get the bastards to listen but they wouldn’t. They hadn’t even provided the ‘service’ of parking as DH never left the car park and missed his appointment yet they managed to extract money with menaces basically. The only reason we coughed up was because we didn’t want him to end up in court.

Rant over.
