Just waved goodbye to perfectly good money through my own stupidity

I reckon dh & I have £120 in parking tickets heading our way. Dh drove mil in her car and didn't realise the car park had a time limit. I realised, but didn't tell dh, then misread my watch and was 20 mins over. Its got apr number plate recognition so think it's automatic. Feeling gutted, what a pair of idiots. We were shopping for cut price kids school shoes in the outlet 😭

Anyone else who might as well have waved goodbye to their money today?

I can beat the Dartford one! I used to work as an accountant for a small company, one of the workers used the crossing but didn't pay within 24 hours. He did tell me this but there wasn't much I could do, we just waited for the fine which is only about £25 if I'm right? Anyway, we broke up for Christmas and all was forgotten until about 6 months later. Bailiffs had called up and were at the old work unit, we'd moved about a year before and I'd not updated the invoice address as I got them electronically, it just didn't occur to me to do it!! Letters had been sent to the old address, which was empty, so we hadn't received them and what should of been £2.50 was about £800!!!!! Luckily they caught my boss on a good day and we didn't get much of a telling off!

Many years ago my teenage self parked in the short term car park instead of the long term car park at the airport and went off for a week in Spain. Came back to find 7 parking tickets on my car. Very costly mistake!

Mumtofourandnomore · 21/08/2022 21:45

I left all our passports (mine plus four children) in the seat pocket in front of me on an aeroplane. Never saw them again.

Because it was a domestic flight I didn’t need them to exit the airport (but had needed them as photo id). I only realised a couple of days later.

5 x new passports (dh looked after his own - very sensible !)

Blowyourowntrumpet · 21/08/2022 21:55

OP, I got one of those parking fines in a retail park. They cancelled it because I was able to produce a receipt for items I'd bought in the retail park when I was parked there. Might be worth looking into.

SurfBox · 21/08/2022 21:58

Found out today that it's been escalated to debt collection agency and £60 is now £180 because she ignored the letters and lied to me. So yeah... That's £180 I haven't really got that I'll have to pay up before she gets a ccj

if it's a privater company don't pay, i never do, they can do fuck all and yes ive had all the letters

expat101 · 21/08/2022 22:22

nearly did. Fell for a scam on a FB e-shop platform for cheap well known brand cookware offer. That was back in May and I was promised several times my order was on its way, and even provided tracking links which showed it arriving in the Country and at a nearby major city for delivery.

Here we are in August and it still hasn't arrived, multiple emails back and forth.

Anyhow as I used my AMEX I lodged a dispute with them, sent through copies of the necessary documents, and the funds were deposited within the week.

I'm not sure if AMEX reimbursed me, or if they managed to withdraw funds from the vendor's account... but it taught me a lesson and I won't be trusting any FB selling/sponsored ad ever again.

Parking fine whilst parked in my own space because I accidentally wasn’t centred and left an inch of rear wheel on a yellow line 🙄

I once parked just off the kings Road in London and paid properly but I had been considerate and reversed a bit to leave enough space so that another car could park. Unwittingly I'd reversed the back wheels into a résidents only bay and arrived back 30mins later to see my car being winched onto a lorry to be taken to the pound!! Cost me a fortune to get it back!!

Willlow · 21/08/2022 22:26

@whiteroseredrose if its the first time in this car they will waive the fine. You will get a letter next week explaining hopefully.

Crustyjuggler92 · 21/08/2022 22:31

A lot of parking these companies are just chancers. If the signage was hard to read, you literally couldn't pay or a whole host of other things apply, you have a case. I won one at the second appeal stage once - council bay parking where the lines were so faded I didn't spot them. They eventually agreed the fine was unfair but haven't repainted the lines and are still fining people there. Crazy that that's allowed.

Then again I tend to just ignore the private ones - the ones that are technically "parking charge notice" rather than fines.

FarmersWife2019 · 21/08/2022 22:31

About 10 years ago I bought a website domain for my old employer and claimed back on expenses. I didn’t realise it was set to auto renew so a couple of years after leaving the company (under acrimonious circumstances) I noticed £200 come out of my bank account. Didn’t want to go begging to my old employer and the website company wouldn’t refund me the money (as I’d agreed to auto renew in the T&Cs) so I had to suck it up. Made damn sure my card details have been removed so it won’t happen again.

Antarcticant · 21/08/2022 22:33

DH had a job in a shop within a retail park. His manager didn't update his car reg details when we changed cars, and he got issued with a huge fine for exceeding the 2 hour limit for the duration of his shifts over about a week!

We sent them a copy of his payslip and it was cancelled, thank goodness!

Oh bugger, went to a concert at Wembley earlier this month & just realised I haven't paid whichever charge it is to get there! Will baby brain be accepted as an excuse 🤦🏻‍♀️

What charge to get to Wembley?!

FarmersWife2019 · 21/08/2022 22:34

Oh and another time I went out for a boozy lunch after a big night out and lost my friends car parking ticket that had to be paid on exit. Had to pay the entire days cost of parking and beg a security guard to lift the barrier.

Feel so sorry for you @Reluctantadult and these companies are cowboys who won’t let you off whatever you say. My DH got a ticket for £100 earlier in the year. He went to a car park and the machine wasn’t working. He tried calling RinGo for 23 minutes (the calls were showing on his call log). Chip and pin and contactless also wasn’t working. He was basically trapped in the car park. He was flashed as having not paid by the ANPR and we tried and tried to get the bastards to listen but they wouldn’t. They hadn’t even provided the ‘service’ of parking as DH never left the car park and missed his appointment yet they managed to extract money with menaces basically. The only reason we coughed up was because we didn’t want him to end up in court.

Rant over.

Why did he just d it online? He clearly had his phone with him. You go into ringo site, type in the location uaing the location number on the sign in the car park and then type in your license plate and pay. It isnt hard.

MrsRinaDecker · 21/08/2022 23:10

I had my current blue badge in the car plus an out of date one.. realised too late that I’d been displaying the wrong one (not sure how long for).. searched high and low for the correct one.. couldn’t find it and ended up with a parking fine plus a £20 fee for a replacement badge 😣

DoItAfraid · 21/08/2022 23:13

mondaytosunday · 21/08/2022 20:58

I missed the renewal date for my annual street permit. I confused the end date with the date I moved in to my new house, when actually it was dated from when I bought the house the week before. I got a ticket a day until I realised. £65 a time.

@mondaytosunday oh no!

Wbeezer · 21/08/2022 23:21

DH was fined £10,000 for accidentally opening some software on an expired trial version he's never got round to deleting! Big software companies have very zealous departments waiting to catch you out. That was a fun week!

Isaidnoalready · 21/08/2022 23:25

Friend took partners car shopping put my number plate in the machine instead of his by mistake technically paid to park just had a moment

Florenz · 21/08/2022 23:31

Parking in this country is a dystopian nightmare.

LoveMyPiano · 21/08/2022 23:33

I parked in store car park that was pay and display, and had an attendant. There was a light covering of snow when I parked (and paid), that melted away whilst I was shopping. The jobsworth attendant gave me a ticket for taking two places - I was about four inches over the line and it was NOT a busy day), which only became evident when the snow had gone!

RosalindsAFuckingNightmare · 21/08/2022 23:39

Pulled into the free parking outside a supermarket, I popped in to buy a packet of cigarettes so I could have a smoke on the way home after a stressful day even though I had a pack at home. I was there about 1 minute. Except I parked too far forward and into the paid bay. That was an expensive cigarette.

MsAdoraBelleDearheartVonLipwig · 21/08/2022 23:39

I’ve just received a parking fine for overstaying in the supermarket car park. The letter said I had 14 days from date of issue to pay or the fine would increase. I received the letter 15 days after it was issued. I’ve appealed.

BetsyBigNose · 21/08/2022 23:59

I renewed my parking permit for the area around my home ahead of time and when the new one arrived, I removed the old one and replaced it straight away, pleased that that was one job ticked off the list.

A couple of days later, I had a parking ticket - I was outraged! I was parked correctly in a marked bay and I had checked the date on the permit and it was valid... It wasn't until I read what was written on the reason for the ticket that I realised that when the council had printed my replacement permit, they had decided that our house was now in a different 'catchment' area, and so whereas previously, we had been able to park on the streets behind our house, we were now supposed to be parking on the much less convenient streets in front!

I appealed and luckily they cancelled the ticket - they also agreed to issue a new permit for the previous area, thank goodness!
