Just had scraps for the first time

Why aren't these a thing everywhere?! We're on holiday in Yorkshire, went to collect our chippy tea and they asked if I wanted 'fish, chips and scraps'. I didn't have a clue what scraps were but I said yes anyway. Delicious!! Gutted it's taken me 44 years to discover them!

Savingpeoplehuntingthings · 12/08/2022 18:29

I want chippy now 😂

Blossoms291 · 12/08/2022 18:30

It was amazing! My OP should have said that they asked if I wanted salt, vinegar and scraps.

Food of the gods, I grew up on chips and scraps.
If you are anywhere near Hull go to a chippy and get a pattie, you won't regret it 😛

hugoagogo · 12/08/2022 18:31

They do not taste good.

ShirleyJackson · 12/08/2022 18:31

Er maar gerd, patties…

Mammyloveswine · 12/08/2022 18:47

My fish and chips with "batter" (scraps in the north east)... Devine!

Just had scraps for the first time

I grew up in the Black Country and the chippy used to always give us loads for free

Rapidtango · 12/08/2022 18:59

Aussie DH is used to F&C fried in vegetable oil. He is now a total convert to F&C fried in dripping with a pile of scraps.

AtomicBlondeRose · 12/08/2022 19:01

The answer is of course “loads please!”. My DD loves scraps more than any other part of a chippy tea.

VaVaVoombangabang · 12/08/2022 19:01

Fish chips and ..........batter...

JoanThursday · 12/08/2022 19:02

Ah scraps!!!

I moved to Yorkshire from darn sarf when I was 13. I had no idea about so many things, and I still remember the incredulity when my new school friends realised I had no clue what scraps were.

Or ginnels, snickets, becks, croggies, push rods, pack-ups .... it was like a different language.

Halfarsedjingler · 12/08/2022 19:02

Divine, my son said the other day he wishes KFC did scraps, imagine how good that would be!

diddl · 12/08/2022 19:03

They're a thing where I grew up in Lincs!

InsertPunHere · 12/08/2022 19:04

Ha! I peel the batter off my fish because I don’t like it.

Me too. I do enjoy how well the fish is cooked inside the batter, so it's all good.

JustTheOneSwan · 12/08/2022 19:07

Try a Sheffield fish cake with Henderson's next (Available in most of Yorkshire)
When I were a nipper we used to buy brown paper bags of scraps for 2p 💘

Lincolnshire here too! Definitely a thing! Now in next door county Leicestershire and they don’t do them here 🥲

Me too, too much fried food is a migraine trigger for me but like a pp, I like the texture of fish when it has been deep fried.

WingBingo · 12/08/2022 19:09

I think that they can’t be sold due to the high fat content.

hence added for free. Yum 😋

DomesticShortHair · 12/08/2022 19:10

I always believed that batter/scraps only being available in the north, is by way of an apology from Mother Nature for the weather.

We would get 2d worth of scraps in the 60’s, that’s about 1p now!

Fluffyboo · 12/08/2022 19:14

I (45) had never heard of scraps until about 5 years ago when my DH mentioned liking them as a kid.
