Just had scraps for the first time

Why aren't these a thing everywhere?! We're on holiday in Yorkshire, went to collect our chippy tea and they asked if I wanted 'fish, chips and scraps'. I didn't have a clue what scraps were but I said yes anyway. Delicious!! Gutted it's taken me 44 years to discover them!

I used to get a free little paper bag of scraps when I went to the chippy when I was little. I lived down south.

Same here, I'm in East Anglia

Eww. All I can see is clogged arteries 🤢

After one meal?

Are you serious?

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 12/08/2022 20:59

Does Bob Carvers still exist? I used to love their shop by the market and their stand at Hull Fair.

This was East Anglia too, where I grew up! I didn't even ask, just gave them a look and they knew I wanted scraps.

brookstar · 12/08/2022 21:04

They're best when they're covered in vinegar so they go all soggy.

We call them bits.... I live somewhere that doesn't do them so I go overboard when I visit home!

Beef dripping is disgusting, people in Yorkshire talk about like it's a selling point.Confused

It's the best way to cook fish and chips, they don't taste right done in vegetable oil.

Greensleeves · 12/08/2022 21:07

They're called gribbles here

MamaNewtNewt · 12/08/2022 21:07

We had patties in the north east too when I was a kid. Fish patty was a slice of potato, a slice of fish, then another slice of potato in batter. Cheese and onion patties were my fave, basically mashed potato, onion and cheese in batter. All served with chips and scraps and plenty of salt and vinegar and washed down with a can of dandelion and burdock. Yum!

Toddlerteaplease · 12/08/2022 21:10

@Snooks1971 I'm Leicestershire born and raised. Never heard of them! Now live in Nottingham where they get an occasional mention.

Hull Fair! Now you are making me feel all nostalgic! Bob Carver died in 2018, but I think one of their ‘restaurants’ are still running…not been for ages, but after this thread, I’ll be going back very soon!

These were fish cakes in Yorkshire when I was a kid, no mashing potatoes and fish together to make them. I served them as a special on our pub menu one lunch time when I lived in another County and sold them all in about 20 minutes and got requests to make them every day.

Titsflyingsouth · 12/08/2022 21:19

Mmm we called them scrumps in my home town. But still luscious with salt and vinegar. When you know, you know 😋

JanuaryParty · 12/08/2022 21:19

TheThirdKit · 12/08/2022 19:56

Where on earth are you from? I reckon I've had a fish supper In nearly every county in the UK and they all serve scraps!

Never heard of them until we had a holiday in Newcastle.
Definitely not available in Surrey

TFMinx · 12/08/2022 21:21

Definitely definitely DEFINITELY get yourself to Hull for a pattie! Absolute heaven! I miss them so much Sad

Herby mashed potato formed in a fish cake shape (but no fish) and deep fried. Amazing. You can get Pattie butties or Pattie and chips. They are available only in Hull or very close by. My husband is from York, I’m from Hull, he doesn’t get it. He always says: ‘Why would you order fried mash potato AND chips’ - because it is amazing!!

Not so, I'm in Trafford and my local chippy does them but calls them potato scallops. Only charges about 50p though, I love batter but hate fish. And yes to dripping on toast!

LondonLovie · 12/08/2022 21:29

We used to get them in my home town (south) when I was a kid. There was a lovely chippy owner in our village and he used to give us kids scraps whilst the fish was cooking & we were waiting. Then on top of that scraps on your chips. Those were the days!

Lwoj · 12/08/2022 21:32

Ah cullercoats bay, love it there

Nat6999 · 12/08/2022 21:32

Cod a foot long, chips & scraps my favourite meal, I had chips & scraps every lunchtime at secondary school, never ate a school dinner.

autienotnaughty · 12/08/2022 21:34

We call them klondykes in the Black Country, no idea why. We always had scraps and now we have battered chips which we - unimaginatively - call orange chips. Delicious 😋

JustTheOneSwan · 12/08/2022 21:39

The dripping from Beres hot roast pork shops sells out every day so we aren't the only ones.
Bread n dripping with a sprinkle of salt is a thing of beauty.
a friends daughter worked there and gave us big tubs when she could get them, the staff took turns taking it home. Best roasties for months.

alotoftutus · 12/08/2022 21:39

I have never heard of scraps 🤣 what are they? Is it a Northern thing?

GinasGirl · 12/08/2022 22:03

Oh I love them! My friend introduced them to me when we met in junior school Cambridge circa 1985 and I'd gone to hers for dinner. Her Mum sent us to the chippy and she put in the order then asked for a bag of scraps.
2p for a bag of heaven!
Live elsewhere now and they don't do them here 😢

BakewellGin1 · 12/08/2022 22:11
