Just had scraps for the first time

Why aren't these a thing everywhere?! We're on holiday in Yorkshire, went to collect our chippy tea and they asked if I wanted 'fish, chips and scraps'. I didn't have a clue what scraps were but I said yes anyway. Delicious!! Gutted it's taken me 44 years to discover them!

Gubbins they're called round here.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 12/08/2022 19:17

I swear I moved north for the chips'n'gravy 😋

Divine, my son said the other day he wishes KFC did scraps, imagine how good that would be!

I now need this in my life Grin

MotherOfPuffling · 12/08/2022 19:20

Mmmm, my (Scottish) dad ensured the rest of my (soft, Southern) family knew about scraps. Delicious!

Veryverycalmnow · 12/08/2022 19:21

I used to get a free little paper bag of scraps when I went to the chippy when I was little. I lived down south.

Sunnysal · 12/08/2022 19:21

Round our way it was, 'and some scraps for the dogs ' ..not sure why.

ecnatsid · 12/08/2022 19:22

What are scraps?

OutDamnedSpot · 12/08/2022 19:24

ExH introduced me to scraps. Probably the best thing to come out of our relationship, except for my kids, of course 😅

But it must have been close.

NCHammer2022 · 12/08/2022 19:46

Wait, are they not a thing everywhere now? Even M&S started selling a little pot of scraps last year to much derision.

TurquoiseDragon · 12/08/2022 19:51

Snooks1971 · 12/08/2022 19:07

Lincolnshire here too! Definitely a thing! Now in next door county Leicestershire and they don’t do them here 🥲

Some chippies will have them if you ask. You might need to ask for batter bits, though. Not called scraps here.

DarkShade · 12/08/2022 19:54

Excellent, I came on here thinking it would be a cost of living thread - very pleased for you OP!

TheThirdKit · 12/08/2022 19:56

Where on earth are you from? I reckon I've had a fish supper In nearly every county in the UK and they all serve scraps!

Mortonpup · 12/08/2022 19:57

Are fish and chips still in dripping in Yorkshire? I'm off to Scarborough and hope not - much love a veg oil fish and chips but can't bear the smell of beefiness in dripping

Davros · 12/08/2022 19:58

We had them growing up in London and our local London chippy does them

Because it is....

You can't have a GOOD Yorkshire Pudding or Roast Potato's without it.

My father used to have BD on toast as a treat as a child....he's still partial to it today.

Shropshire. They don't exist here or at least not in the chippies I go to.

I always believed that batter/scraps only being available in the north, is by way of an apology from Mother Nature for the weather.

They're not only available in the north though.

gotelltheoldmandowntheroad · 12/08/2022 20:30

Is it the crunchy scrapings from the chip fryer? Yes. I spent a lot of my childhood in Yorkshire in the 80s and 90s and we would always get the scraps, they were free.

Whatthechicken · 12/08/2022 20:41

Blossoms291 · 12/08/2022 18:56

What's a pattie?

Herby mashed potato formed in a fish cake shape (but no fish) and deep fried. Amazing. You can get Pattie butties or Pattie and chips. They are available only in Hull or very close by. My husband is from York, I’m from Hull, he doesn’t get it. He always says: ‘Why would you order fried mash potato AND chips’ - because it is amazing!!
