Why isn't a scotch egg considered a breakfast food?

It's basically sausage, egg and bread in a sphere shape....

Deep frying? Does that rule things out of being breakfast foods in the U.K. at least? Or that the meat/egg isn’t usually served warm so is a bit more continental(!)

NoWeaponsOnTheTable · 10/08/2022 20:38

It is in my house.
Not regularly but I have eaten such a delicious confection to break my fast 😄

MacKenzieMcHale · 10/08/2022 20:38

It's because they're rank.

WeAreTheHeroes · 10/08/2022 20:39

My first thought was that it's deep fried and usually served cold

SuperlativeOxymoron · 10/08/2022 20:40

I fully encourage you as an adult to get one out of the fridge and eat it at any time of day.

I have been known to have a fruit and nut bar for breakfast, beauty of own choice.

SandcastleQueen · 10/08/2022 20:40

I dunno but I'm going on holiday tomorrow and damn if I don't want a scotch egg to go with my breakfast pint now!

AmandaHoldensLips · 10/08/2022 20:43

I have been in the factory that makes the scotch eggs. We need a public information film.

DeanStockwelll · 10/08/2022 20:44

Scoth eggs are great at anytime . They only problem with them is they can be a bit dry so I need a dollop of sauce of some sort ketchup Mayo mustard whatever I've got closest to hand

Thorilicious · 10/08/2022 20:49

@MacKenzieMcHale you take that back! 😂
@DeanStockwelll easily fixed if the yolk is left slightly runny...

In this household it absolutely is a breakfast food.
sausage, egg bread.

got to be.

BertieBotts · 10/08/2022 20:54

Because they are for picnics, of course!

Doesn't seem to fit the British definition of a breakfast food, anyway. Like sausage rolls. Not for breakfast. They probably would be if they had originated in America.

ChubbyCaterpillar · 10/08/2022 20:55

Because it's for a picnic and nothing else.

Maybe go out for a breakfast picnic then you can have it

bigbeautifulmonster · 10/08/2022 20:56

Deep fried doesn't rule out breakfast criteria. Potato hash anyone?

MrsSkylerWhite · 10/08/2022 20:57

Because they’re cold? If I’m having eggs/meat for breakfast, I’d like them to be hot.

gogohmm · 10/08/2022 21:00

No idea. In Leicester there's a thing about pork pies for breakfast on Christmas Day so why not scotch eggs for the rest of the year Grin. Personally I prefer curry and rice for breakfast, local cafe does it as a £2.99 take away

Cornettoninja · 10/08/2022 21:04

I’d genuinely never considered it but you’re right!

hotfroth · 10/08/2022 21:16

Why have I never thought of this before? Op, you are a genius.

tiger2691 · 10/08/2022 21:21

Rank?? I love em, cut in half, with loads of mustard, or pickle, or both, on them.

That rate my takeaway Danny has had some wonderful scotch eggs, and everything is so much cheaper and you get loads more, up his way. Down here, on the south coast, we get ripped off.

Dilbertian · 10/08/2022 21:35

I don't normally eat scotch eggs (pork, Jewish) but once I had a haggis scotch egg. Oh my, so delicious! I'd have that for breakfast.

Breakfast prejudices are weird: fried, greasy, salted meat - yes, salad - no; toast and yogurt - yes, cheese on toast - no. Weird.

PuttingDownRoots · 10/08/2022 21:43

You don't have to fry them. They can be baked.

All you need to know about Scotch Eggs.

Davros · 10/08/2022 22:27

Who's going to make their own scotch eggs? 😂 they come from the supermarket

FinallyHere · 10/08/2022 22:31

We don't divide food into breakfast and non breakfast foods.

Our local deli makes their own scotch eggs and insist they are eaten while still warm.

Not sure what I'm doing on this thread, come to think about it. 😃

MajorCarolDanvers · 10/08/2022 22:33

I had a gorgeous variation on Scotch egg in a restaurant recently where the sausage was substituted with haggis. Served hot with a dressing of whisky sauce. Delish.

(it was a starter with dinner)

Itssolate · 10/08/2022 22:36

Too dry and too cold.

I could get on board with a hot Scotch egg with beans for breakfast though.
