Why isn't a scotch egg considered a breakfast food?

It's basically sausage, egg and bread in a sphere shape....

I used to work in a restaurant that served them with a runny yolk and asparagus soldiers to dip as a starter. Much more nutritious and delicious than a lot of “breakfast” foods.

I've never considered having them for breakfast. And now I think I should.

A fellow school mum told me once that jam sandwiches weren't a breakfast food. (We were running so late dc ate them on the way to school Blush)
When I asked why, when it's just Jam on toast but cold, she said "well it's just different." Hmm

Moooooooooooooooooo · 10/08/2022 22:55

I make my own with southern fried seasoning on the outer crust and we eat them hot - or cold the next day if we don’t manage them all in one go.

I went to a restaurant once where they served them with a thin layer of black pudding between the egg and the sausage meat. Again, served hot. Was delish

Thorilicious · 11/08/2022 10:15

I'm now thinking of making some with a hash brown covering....

I've never thought about it, but they'd be an excellent portable breakfast food if you need to be out early and aren't hungry or don't have time for breakfast. Just take a scotch egg with you and eat it later.

I don't like scotch eggs but sometimes take egg mayonnaise sandwiches out with me to have at around 10 as my first meal of the day, because I never eat cereal, cereal bars etc and tbh, I find the thought of fruit/yogurt for breakfast really unappealing.

I’ve taken peanut butter sarnies to work before when I’ve not had time for breakfast at home, seems like breakfast to me?!

I dip scotch eggs in hummus which is ultra un-breakfasty. But a lot of other cultures have savoury breakfasts so perhaps it’s not a bad idea!

Dilbertian · 11/08/2022 13:01

There is a reason I don't have a deep fat fryer. Non-pork Scotch eggs, nomnom. Altogether too much nom. But now I'm thinking about vegetarian Scotch eggs wrapped in hash brown. Mmmm more nom.

Could you bake a Scotch egg? I make baked chicken schnitzel that's coated in crushed cornflakes instead of breadcrumbs , and it's very good. Could you use that idea for a baked Scotch egg? Obviously you wouldn't get the spherical shape, but what if they were baked in a cup cake tray?

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 11/08/2022 13:08

I don't see why not either? I have - on occasion - made my own, baked in the oven. I have no idea what sorcery the proper scotch egg manufacturers employ to keep the egg completely covered but, I can't do it. Mine open up like burst pillow.

<waiting patiently for some kind poster to give an idiot-proof recipe>

Google 'baked scotch egg' there are loads of recipes. I haven't tried any of them (yet)

MissAmbrosia · 11/08/2022 13:13

My nan used to make the best scotch eggs ever. Never had one to compare. I want one now.

Squashpocket · 11/08/2022 13:15

It's because they are specifically made in that shape so that they can be eaten with hands outside of the house e.g. at a picnic.

If you weren't having it outside the house then why would you go to the faff of shaping the sausage around the egg and deep frying it? You'd just eat the egg and sausage separately.

It's a picnic food OP. Obviously.

ah, but now we’re in the age of ‘breakfast bars’ I think scotch eggs should cross over.

batch cooking. Make all your breakfasts for the week!

AnchorWHAT · 11/08/2022 18:04

I make my own, veggie sos mix for DH and sausage meat mixed with corned beef and chopped onion for the carnivores, roll in southern fried breadcrumbs and bake in oven… delish

Passmethecrisps · 11/08/2022 18:10

I love a scotch egg. And would happily eat one at any time. My youngest DD has taken to having mashed potato for breakfast so am all in for all foods at breakfast time

edwinbear · 11/08/2022 18:17

Since we got an air fryer and learnt to make our own, they are very much considered an appropriate food for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 11/08/2022 18:25

They are DD's birthday breakfast of choice

Oblomov22 · 11/08/2022 18:29

Home made by my sil, warm, best thing ever.

User3936493947 · 11/08/2022 18:47

I really want a scotch egg now.

SaintHelena · 11/08/2022 19:12

SuperlativeOxymoron · 10/08/2022 20:40

I fully encourage you as an adult to get one out of the fridge and eat it at any time of day.

I have been known to have a fruit and nut bar for breakfast, beauty of own choice.

Chocolate tastes best in the morning - try it

Not the same.

I don’t really subscribe to the idea of “breakfast food”. I just eat food I want when I want it. It’s all going in the same hole!

SquigglePigs · 11/08/2022 22:34

Pre-covid, when I still traveled for work a fair bit, scotch eggs would often feature as an on-the-go breakfast. I don't like to eat first thing so it was good to take if I had an early train. Nice big protein hit, easy and non-messy to eat. What's not to love?!
