New thread as needed.

I wonder what new promises will come out this week?

It's worth remembering that many claim expenses which pays their staff. So sometimes they have 70/80k of which 60 is wages.

The other 10/20k is often dubious!

Hmmm. I see Steve Baker claimed £190K last year.

Friend of mine works for a charity. Baker turned up with a researcher at an event they held in his local area and purported to be interested in their work. Afterwards he wrote asking them to gather and send lots of information about their area of work in that constituency, saying that sadly he only had one government-funded researcher so couldn't gather it himself. Friend said she lobbed the letter straight into the bin, though she was tempted to write back to point out that the charity would regard even one government funded researcher as the height of luxury. So either he was telling porkies then, or he's had a major expansion in staff numbers, or he's claiming a hell of a lot over and above staffing costs.

Here we go, no need to panic after all:-

news.sky.com/story/boris-johnson-says-britain-will-emerge-stronger-and-more-prosperous-after-cost-of-living-crisis-ends-12683524

More golden age bollocks.

tobee · 28/08/2022 01:38

Wondering how long Johnson thinks the cost of living crisis will last? How long the recovery after the further depths of shit the government will be dragging us into?

Tellmewhatyoureallythink · 28/08/2022 02:28

The commercial tariff of a small local business near me is going up from October to £4,000 a week. £4,000 a week. The business is one that relies on people coming to them to do various activities. The owner says they will have to turn off the heating from October until February which means that essentially their business will close during that period and may not reopen afterwards.

Horrendous.

And we still no action from this so-called government who really couldn’t care less about people having to choose between heating and eating or about the small businesses that will be forced to close.

And I agree with the pp who said that this just underlines exactly why we had to get rid of Boris, he has once again shown his inability to lead or even care about anything that isn’t of direct personal benefit to him. Yes he’s stepping down but couldn’t the three of them - Truss Sunak and Johnson - come up with some sort of plan between them to address the crisis? You know, actually show a bit of leadership? Oh no silly me, we must focus on the important things like the seemingly never-ending Conservative Party leadership debate.

Don't say that on the Feminism board. They think she's wonderful because she says the right things about trans issues.

Well apparently she knows what a woman is.
Although no ones seems to be able to say what she or they mean by that statement.

countrygirl99 · 28/08/2022 06:57

I do occasionally point out that the taliban also know what a woman is but probably would not the best outcome for women.

itsgettingweird · 28/08/2022 08:09

Braverman did do a good summary of the law surrounding the trans issue.

She didn't say what her opinion of it was etc just what the law says and the responsibility in schools in relation to this re the law.

It's the only time I've ever actually liked anything she's said.

But I agree the worrying thing is that people assume because someone states the law (or whatever) because it's their job that makes them amazing based on that one thing.

But Braverman is a racist and only interested in what propels Braverman to the dizzy heights of importance she thinks she's entitled to.

She spends her entire time going around the middle class areas (mainly speciality cake shops and sailing groups) of our constituency and posting how wonderful they are on FB.
Funny how she hasn't visited the many businesses already shutting their doors because of the cost of living and energy crisis.

Looks like the squatter in Chequers has taken the golden wall paper with him then?

Meanwhile Efficiency minister Jacob Rees-Mogg spent £1,300 of public money travelling to Wrexham by chauffeur driven car.

A return train ticket would have cost £98.

He probably thinks that's when he will come back to power, so he can fuck it all up again.

the80sweregreat · 28/08/2022 11:42

The headlines today in the daily Mail type papers in the shops were all very upbeat.
Can you imagine if this was a Labour Party in charge telling us bad news about the economy/ energy bills etc , it would all be terrible! ' why arnt they doing anything ? ' screaming headlines
Maybe they know something we don't ?
( although on line it is a bit less positive, but they tend to drop it down the bottom behind articles about celebs etc)

balalake · 28/08/2022 11:45

If Mr Johnson told you it was a bank holiday tomorrow, it would be the only honest thing he has said for a long time.

Depends when he tells you Smile

Weren't we supposed to go onto a roaring 20s era after covid?

Blossomtoes · 28/08/2022 13:56

It’s roaring all right - with pain.

the80sweregreat · 28/08/2022 14:04

It will be a painful few years I think
Unless something drastic happens in Russia , but I can't see that resolving itself any time soon .

Straight to the General Strike era

mibbelucieachwell · 28/08/2022 14:55

The other night I fell asleep with the radio on and awoke to an expert lamenting the Uk government's apparent lack of effort to secure supplies of gas, eg from Norway.
I suppose when wealthy households join the ranks of homes with rationed gas/electricity not because they can't afford it but because it isn't available the government will have have made things more equal #levellingdown AngryAngryAngry

As my home has an open fireplace (living flame gas fire that we put on at Christmas only) I'm now looking into getting a stove. According to my research, the least damaging ones burn pellets, but all of those, except for one American stove manufacturer require electricity to feed the pellets in.

I've previously resisted changing from my probably averagely- green lifestyle to being more environmentally conscious on cost grounds but now I'm seriously considering dipping into savings for a less green heating system.

L1ttledrummergirl · 28/08/2022 15:30

I'm planning on getting our chimney swept, it has a grate and we have an apple tree that needs pruning.

We also have seasoned wood from last year.

tobee · 28/08/2022 01:35

Err How exactly?

There is no North Sea oil riding to the rescue this time round and Brexit ensures we'll lose our science sector and poss Finance too.

He really is a prat.

newnamethanks · 28/08/2022 20:11

But tobee, surely you don't expect a gentleman like Rees Mogg, he of the towering intellect and capacious knowledge so obviously on display, to travel on a train with the common herd? He might catch something. That would be a very sad loss to us all, whatever would we do without his frequent offerings of his very own brand of common sense?

Novum · 28/08/2022 22:24

I'm feeling quite envious of a friend who has just moved to a house with a woodturning stove and open woodland with lots of free fuel for the taking just nearby.

Cornettoninja · 29/08/2022 08:40

well I just fell down a rabbit hole on China. Started off reading about their heatwave/droughts and ended up learning about their predicted property bubble bursting.

I really don’t want this band of con artists and incompetents navigating us through this Sad

DuncinToffee · 29/08/2022 09:39

As someone who has never had a woodburner or woodturning stove, does a woodland really provide enough wood to get through a cold winter? I don't know what you can and cannot collect but assume you need at least a decent storage of dry wood.

Just musing as sticks don't last long on a campfire.

the80sweregreat · 29/08/2022 10:05

I'm a bit clueless about the economy outside my own finances ( and an 'o level ' grade B in economics) so why is the Chinese property market stalling going to affect us?
Is it to do with our pensions , the stock market etc? Just the knock on effects of a big country in recession?

You need a lot of wood to last a normal winter and therefore storage, remember to stack it on pallets or similar if out doors & most wood needs a year to season if cut in winter, when sap not rising.

When we used to buy the stuff, 4 x 1.2 cubic meter loads would just about be enough, 5kw stove.

However, the more modern Eco burners are far more efficient, i think our new stove has reduced the amount of wood we need by about a 1/3rd.

Depends on size of the woodland! and you'll be hard pressed to forage that amount.
