School uniform rules

So at our school (primary) girls can wear plain black leggings under a dress or skirt.

So can I assume that if this is ok boys should be able to wear black leggings instead of the typical boys school trousers ? My son is much more comfortable in them as prefers the softness and fit but I don’t want to send him on the first day and it’s not ok or am I just overthinking ?!!! It must be ok if girls can with a skirt ?!

You'd have to speak to the school. Boys will not be wearing leggings though.

Why would girls be wearing leggings under a dress or skirt though? That's weird

exnewwifeproblems · 06/08/2022 12:01

None of the boys will be wearing leggings.

The girls who can wear them with skirts is different - would you be sending your son in a skirt?

I assume it’s just a choice in colder weather if leggings and socks or tights? That’s what I think anyway. He’s just so much more comfortable I think it’s the softness but tightness (he has ASD) so I want him to be comfortable as typical trousers with fastenings or ‘harder’ material just annoy him (he will not wear jeans either !!) I think I’ll try to ask the day before they go back

Sorry but no, my daughter wears leggings under skirts and dresses to answer pp as she struggles with tights, so she wears them as tights with black socks but I wouldn’t send her in with leggings as trousers and no boys will be wearing leggings you’re setting him up to be laughed at.

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 06/08/2022 12:03

You said it yourself, under a dress or a skirt, not on its own. So I assume unless he wears a dress or a skirt, I don't think you can argue that boys should be able to wear it.
But you never know, just ask the school.

BiscoffSundae · 06/08/2022 12:04

Could you send him in with joggers that’s what my son (asd) wears school are fine with it, you can’t put him in leggings.

Phillipa12 · 06/08/2022 12:04

The reason behind leggings under a skirt or dress is usually to do with girls doing handstands or cartwheels and them not having to worry about flashing underwear. I would ask before sending your son in wearing leggings. Just because its in the girls uniform does not mean that the boys can wear the same.

No obviously not a skirt as well but I was just thinking if it’s ok for girls to then if a boy does too it’s not going to look out of place and is within the rules sort of

Seems to me that the rules mean that leggings can be worn in place of tights, so still will a skirt over them and therefore still looking like a school uniform. Tights can be hard for young children to pull up and down so that is likely the reason. School trousers with elstic waists should be confortable enough and easy enough for boys to wear.

I'm sure the school won't want children (of either sex) just wearing leggings but by all means do check with them.

Comedycook · 06/08/2022 12:05

My DD used to wear leggings under her school skirt in the winter. Tights are a faff for young children and socks would have left her with cold legs. Leggings were in place of tights...rather than a piece of uniform so no, in terms of the 'rules' I can't see how boys would be able to wear them.

Sherrystrull · 06/08/2022 12:05

You can get purely elasticated waist shorts and trousers. That's what I got for my DC as they couldn't work buttons and sliders. They are much more comfortable too.

He won’t wear them he hates the feel he wears leggings all the time and did at his old nursery and in summer wears the cycling shorts as they have the same tightness that He needs

It’s the flapping or looseness if material as much as the waistband I think that’s an issue for him. I might talk to school as the more comfortable he is the better. I was worrying about it then saw in the uniform checklist about the leggings for girls so thought he could just keep wearing what he likes to wear

He overheats easily and wouldn’t like 2 waistbands

Leggings under skirt or dress would be for modesty in place of a pair of tights. If the girls aren't wearing just leggings I'm not sure why you assume your son should.

Comedycook · 06/08/2022 12:10

You can buy soft jersey school trousers which have no fastenings...they are "for girls" but might fit the bill.

He has ASD so I’m wondering if it might actually be ok so that he feels comfortable

I agree with pp that those rules make it clear that leggings can be used in place of tights which is why he would need to wear a dress or skirt over them.

if he has asd then I would speak to the school. None of the boys will be wearing leggings.

Sherrystrull · 06/08/2022 12:11

I am sure the school would be accommodating. Has his preschool sent a handover or have you had a meeting with staff who will be supporting him?

I would send an email to school now explaining what you've explained to us and request a callback.

Thanks I’ll have a look I just need something that has the same level of softness but also the tightness/compression of leggings all the way down the leg and a thin soft waistband

None of the boys at his old nursery did either but he didn’t ever notice he just needs to be comfortable

Yes nursery did a handover but I’ll definitely talk to them about this as well I’ve been focusing on so much other stuff that I just suddenly thought of this

School will be different my son wouldn’t be seen dead in leggings at school and would be teased for it, speak to them though if you are happy for him to wear them I’m sure they will be ok with it

Whatwouldscullydo · 06/08/2022 12:17

Sounds like the leggings are in place of tights which is a really good idea as tights are just awful.

So theoretically your ds should he able to wear leggings under a skirt or shorts.

I doubt either sex wear the leggings on their own.

I think you should converse with the school see if they will let him wear something he's comfortable in as allowances fir his asd should obviously be being made. It would be extremely counter productive to refuse in order to prove some ridiculous uniform point.

As an aside have you tried something like everything for eczema. Or other eczema clothing websites ? They are often soft cotton and seamless. Might find something he would cope with.

Good luck op
