School uniform rules

So at our school (primary) girls can wear plain black leggings under a dress or skirt.

So can I assume that if this is ok boys should be able to wear black leggings instead of the typical boys school trousers ? My son is much more comfortable in them as prefers the softness and fit but I don’t want to send him on the first day and it’s not ok or am I just overthinking ?!!! It must be ok if girls can with a skirt ?!

Next have girls jeggings for school which feel like leggings that I know a few boys with sensory issues have bought this year. I think actual leggings is too far from the uniform - these feel the same but look like trousers and not quite as skin tight.

School will be different my son wouldn’t be seen dead in leggings at school and would be teased for it, speak to them though if you are happy for him to wear them I’m sure they will be ok with it

I don’t think ds would think of anything other than how what he wears feels and even if someone did make fun I doubt he would notice or understand. I think he would have more attention drawn to him if he wore what he finds unbearable as then he will react / make more noises/ fidget meltdown etc

This is my problem he really likes the skintight feel I don’t know if it’s the compression ? He has a weighted blanket for bed and he likes to squeeze himself into small spaces and wrap himself in things I think it’s calming for him ?

Would it be possible for him to wear soft, close fitting joggers rather than leggings?
The school should allow adjustments for asd, but leggings (unless possibly in the context of sports leggings) are not typically worn by boys and the other children could notice and ask him about it.

Sounds like the leggings are in place of tights which is a really good idea as tights are just awful.

So theoretically your ds should he able to wear leggings under a skirt or shorts.

I doubt either sex wear the leggings on their own.

I think you should converse with the school see if they will let him wear something he's comfortable in as allowances fir his asd should obviously be being made. It would be extremely counter productive to refuse in order to prove some ridiculous uniform point.

As an aside have you tried something like everything for eczema. Or other eczema clothing websites ? They are often soft cotton and seamless. Might find something he would cope with.

Good luck op

I’ll have a look Thankyou. Currently we are having to get most things from girls sections on one size smaller for him to accommodate the need for a certain fit as it really does calm him

If he is ok with cycle shorts only, can the tightness be achieved with longer leg trunk type under wear under elasticated waist trousers?

elliejjtiny · 06/08/2022 12:23

You need to check with the school as some can be quite strict about uniform.

My 8 year old ds has asd and he wears leggings to school on non uniform days.

So far trying anything else has just resulted in sensory issues. I don’t think for a moment he would mind if anyone asked him he would probably walk off or talk about something he wants to talk about Im not too worried about the being different aspect /teasing as he just doesn’t understand that so he wouldn’t be upset as wouldn’t know

He is ok with them (I think) because he can see where they end and he has tightness then nothing ? If that makes sense but trousers that are tighter at top /looser at bottom just irritate and he can see they differ at different parts.
i don’t think he would like 2 layers. He is still in nappies too so it would add bulk that he wouldn’t be able to tolerate

The marks and spencers girls jersey trousers would mimic that feeling of tightness around his waist and thighs. They are looser at the bottom of the leg if that wouldn't be a problem.
Or pennys have the thick brushed cotton on the inside leggings but probably only in the winter. Could he start off in cycling shorts as the weather would be nice and then see how things go.

switswoo81 · 06/08/2022 12:26

Sorry Primark

CityOfCake · 06/08/2022 12:26

I’ve spent all my time focusing on EHCP issues that uniform problems har totally escaped me till today

Yes I think September will prob be warm enough for the shorts

Our school the uniformed choices are the same for both boys and girls.

switswoo81 · 06/08/2022 12:30

Understandable it's very stressful for you. I teach this age group and have adapted the uniform in many different ways to suit sensory and medical needs so he won't be the first or the last.

You said it yourself, under a dress or a skirt, not on its own. So I assume unless he wears a dress or a skirt, I don't think you can argue that boys should be able to wear it.
But you never know, just ask the school.

This ^

CakeCrumbs44 · 06/08/2022 12:32

Something like this could work? They're basically leggings, are quite tight and don't have buckles or buttons. They just look a bit more like school trousers.
I think these are in the girls section but they might do similar in the boys section, or just wear girls ones as they are just black trousers.

Could you send him in with joggers that’s what my son (asd) wears school are fine with it, you can’t put him in leggings.

I was going to suggest this.

As he has asd he is covered by the equality act.

It's not a case of what they'll allow him to wear.

They have to make reasonable adjustments to the uniform to accommodate what he can tolerate wearing.

The school is open for a day before the children go back so I’ll try to check with someone then and hopefully can sort it out. It just totally escaped me I’ve been focusing on so much else !

They could possibly work I’d have to go and look at them to assess the material and how they feel and see how thick the waistband is etc then if ok possibly start to put them on him I’ve the holidays for short periods of time and build up some tolerance so they may be an option Thankyou !

I don’t know if anyone has mentioned, Asda do ‘easy on’ school uniform range which may be softer etc, could be worth a look?

Rosehugger · 06/08/2022 12:38

YANBU. Uniform policy should not be expressed as what boys or girls have to wear, but as to what the choices are for everyone. A choice of skirt/trousers etc. Leggings can be worn under a skirt. No need for reference to the sex of the wearer.

DDs school don't allow just leggings in either gender ASD or not. They're allowed black or grey leggings under skirts, dresses or shorts (either gender). They're also not allowed just the cycling shorts on PE days they have to have the baggy material ones, they're allowed the cycling shorts under a dress or skirt though.

My DD has hypermobility as well as other SN and finds the tightness of leggings/cycling shorts helpful but school won't allow them on their own for modesty reasons.

She wears the shorts under her summer dress and leggings under her pinafore in winter. Another boy in her class wears shorts with leggings underneath for similar reasons to DD.

I'd chat to the school, DDs school where really helpful and bent over backwards to help her.

MyBrilliantFriend · 06/08/2022 12:41

This would be totally fine at the school I teach at - in fact all primary schools I’ve worked at would have made this accommodation.

children in general are also a lot more accepting than many adults - they wouldn’t comment or care about what anyone else wears.
