School uniform rules

So at our school (primary) girls can wear plain black leggings under a dress or skirt.

So can I assume that if this is ok boys should be able to wear black leggings instead of the typical boys school trousers ? My son is much more comfortable in them as prefers the softness and fit but I don’t want to send him on the first day and it’s not ok or am I just overthinking ?!!! It must be ok if girls can with a skirt ?!

It’s leggings instead of tights so unless you are going to do a skirt over the top then it’s not the same thing.

Sandysandwich · 06/08/2022 18:08

Are leggings the only thing that he will tolerate? it might be good to try out even more alternatives with him in case the school are not onboard with him wearing them, especially as their rules include leggings as an alternative to tights, not an alternative to trousers.

Sandysandwich · 06/08/2022 18:14

Would he tolerate something like the grey jersey trousers by TU, soft pull on and leggingy but with a bit of movent at the ankle so they look less like tights.
Lots of jersey trousers (mostly girls but it won't matter much at his age) are similar to leggings but may be allowed in the rules, and they have the benefit of being a little thicker so won't go see through or show underpants lines through them. Also some have a fake pocket design so will appear more like regular trousers to others

Ithink the school may allow it. M&S do trousers for kids with additional needs.
However think about moving forward a few years. Kids can be horrible bullies.
My df son lives in leggings hes 6 He wore to a non uniform day and got teased for having 'girl trousers' at 6!!!
He now constantly mentions it.

Maybe its best to make the adaption now.

Leggings or cycling shorts I think he tolerates the shorts as he can see where they end ? We’ve tried other things and he just can’t cope if there is any looseness to them at all

But the tightness has to be soft stretchy tightness if that makes sense he can tell as well if I’ve got a different brand of clothing they have to be just right

Another vote for the M&S trousers, but at DDs school lots of boys wear leggings and girls wear their leggings with or without skirt/dress (especially on PE days where the younger ones don't get changed in to PE kit). But we are in Wales where uniform policies are very relaxed.

LeafBlow · 06/08/2022 18:47

Its so hard to find the right stuff that is comfy and acceptable to them whilst also being age and situation appropriate. My brother was similar at school, liked tight but soft and no flapping fabric or anything that wouldn't stretch. Leggings were not a possibility for him at the time, they were not really about and he was very skinny and tall so couldnt fit in womens ones but he wore many different things throught his time.

He had at different points
Compression socks (knee high)
Compression tights, under his slim fit trousers.
Skinny jeans but they were womens jeggings, he grew out of them fast but were great for a bit.
Skins the tracksuit type trousers from sports direct but a size too small and they are skin tight and soft
Mens gym leggings under very lightweight shorts (always looks like hes going to the gym but is comfy
Regular kids wooly tights under tracksuit bottoms
Nylon tights under those soft jersey type trousers (covered his skin so he didnt notice any flapping)
Long johns, underneath trousers that he had to wear for a wedding
As a little child he wore mostly girls skinny fit trousers as they were tighter in the leg
The soft costume trousers from a pirate outfit, the bottom half of a skeleton and the legs from his wise men costume.
Girls jazz trousers for dancing
Boys trampolining and gymnastics trousers
And once a pair of dungarees with cyclists clips on the ankles to prevent 'flappy legs'

Oh my word so people even READ threads and replies?

STOP with the "of school allow it"

They cannot not allow it legally.

He has autism. He is covered by the equality act.

They MUST by LAW make reasonable adjustments.

Tell the school what he's wearing and why.

And if ANY kid laughs it doesn't matter if he notices or cares. Do NOT allow anyone to bulky your disabled child. It comes under hate crime.

Lulu1919 · 06/08/2022 18:52

He should be able to wear school shorts with leggings under
But not leggings alone..same as girls won't be able to wear just leggings

Lulu1919 · 06/08/2022 18:54

Does he have an EHCP ?

Sprogonthetyne · 06/08/2022 18:55

As a general rule I'd say no, the girls are wereing leggings as an undergarment in place of tights, not as the top layer as you are suggesting. However I'd be asking for him to be allowed leggings (or maby joggers) as a reasonable adjustment for his ASD, that's the line I'd take with the school, instead of trying to make it into a sex equality matter when it isn't.

Lulu1919 · 06/08/2022 18:55

Sorry just scrolled through and I see it mentioned....

Fiiiivegoldenrings · 06/08/2022 18:59

Op these are the jeggings I was referring to from Next. I think ultimately you're probably just better to ask the school now as you've got a few options & it's descended into you having to justify yourself (which you don't need to do!) & really nobody's opinion other than the school's matters. Our school doesn't allow deviations but they'll all have different policies- good luck Smile

Carrieonmywaywardsun · 06/08/2022 19:04

You should speak to the school about reasonable adjustments for his ASD that could make uniform changes possible

Sprogonthetyne · 06/08/2022 19:06

Alternatively DS wore these for a while, they're quite legging like at the top but a bit looser at the feet, if you think he'd accept them

RicStar · 06/08/2022 19:09

This is why I am entirely grateful that boys and girls can and do wear leggings at dcs school. I cant see how the school can or will object OP.

iknowthismuchis · 06/08/2022 19:24

It's maddening that everyone is tripping over themselves to find alternatives to leggings in case other children tease him for wearing "girls clothes". It's a piece of cloth! How about we teach our children that fabric isn't a gendered item instead?

mumto4boys16 · 06/08/2022 19:25

I would speak to the school. My son is autistic and before they broke up I had a meeting to go over the next year and what we could do to make things easier. He will only wear joggers though but that was fine

rumplestiltskinp · 07/08/2022 10:10

Your logic is flawed. If boys can wear something on its own because girls wear it under a skirt, what else could that apply to?

The boys' uniform is black trousers, leggings are tight undergarments or sports garments for comfort. The uniform though, that's not leggings, but black trousers, school trousers.

I get where he's coming from about feelings of clothes because I'm the same, and so I wear leggings without underpants because that is what is comfortable for me, and I get stick for it from my family too but I can't be comfy in clothes for the same reasons, my daughter is the same. But what I would try and find for him would be some jersey trousers, ones that are elastic and not pressed but have a similar effect. www.google.com/search?q=boys+jersey+trousers+school&rlz=1C1CHBF_en-GBGB882GB882&sxsrf=ALiCzsZ8AG1CyvuS49Fc9koQzkIajU2ykQ:1659863399979&source=lnms&tbm=shop&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjVhNOCsbT5AhVKQUEAHV90AeMQ_AUoAXoECAEQAw&biw=1163&bih=546&dpr=1.65

womaninatightspot · 07/08/2022 10:30

I know at our school uniform rules have gotten a bit lax over the covid years. One of the boys in my sons class often wears runners leggings from decathlon. Nice kid doesn’t get teased. My own ds wears joggers quite a lot and they are quite form fitting rather than baggy. Our school tries to spend lots of time outdoors and teachers are flexible as clothing should be comfy and practical.

Dewsberry · 07/08/2022 10:47

I would start with slim fit joggers (unelasticated ankles if possible) or girls" jersey trousers. Talk to them if you're sending him in joggers. Reasonable adjustments are great but it is well worth trying a few pairs now. If there's one that works and isn't leggings, no one will ever question him on it and you can just rebuy every year.

Have you considered a compression vest maybe introduced as an optional piece of his school uniform? It might help convince him school uniform is a good thing and distract from the trousers a bit.

Dewsberry · 07/08/2022 10:52

Oh and I would assume the leggings under skirts are about being inclusive for Muslim girls. The policy is basically saying leggings without skirt are not acceptable for girls, so steer well clear of trying to use it as a justification.

OK, so your solution for the OP is to just simply eradicate bullying?
