If you could do something to sort out the country / world, what would it be? Your one magic wish. You can have more than one of you want, I'm not adverse to a green point plan!

Wealth distribution

Helpmethinkofasolution · 04/08/2022 17:16

Ban second homes

WhatIsThisPlease · 04/08/2022 17:17

Make public transport so reliable and cheap that nobody would need to have a car.

My nomination is free and efficient public transport. Better for people's finances obviously. Air quality, so health and environment. More freedom people who don't drive.

Also better renting conditions, rent caps and more accountability for both landlords and renters. People shouldn't be able to trash houses and then get another rental property, similarly landlords should fix things promptly and using accredited tradespeople.

MrsTerryPratchett · 04/08/2022 17:20

Have a cooperative, non-partisan, representative government. Set up the structure to represent the interests of the people, with experts looking at system change and best practice.

Rather than watching two types of incredibly similar arseholes gurning and pretending they are still in the fucking playground to score points of one another. PMQ is a joke.

UnnecessaryFennel · 04/08/2022 17:22

Cheap, reliable public transport
Cheap solar panels
Ban 2nd homes
Renationalise utilities

UnnecessaryFennel · 04/08/2022 17:23

Rejoin the EU Wink

MacKenzieMcHale · 04/08/2022 17:24

Universal basic income. Saw an article today that 4 out of 5 Scottish people support it.

MarshaMelrose · 04/08/2022 17:24

Does it have to be paid for? Or is it just like a genie wish?

carefullycourageous · 04/08/2022 17:25

Vote ABC.

Anything
But
Conservative

The first thing we need is PR. The rest will follow.

Well if you have got any maths I'll give you a gold star!

Wealth redistribution - ensure management pay linked to percentage of worker pay, tax on profits above x percentage to offset price increases, index linked pension and benefits, recognition of contribution of public sector workers, inherited wealth tax increases. If all this makes some people leave, good luck to them. Let’s have a fairer society instead of the current nonsense.

NHS funding and resources to ensure remains in proper public ownership, remove private contractors.

Prioritise net zero targets, increase availability of information on green options and support funding where needed. Huge insulation drive for all buildings. Invest in public transport, including in rural areas (increasing number of electric cars is not the answer, cut number of vehicles is).

I could go on but that’s a start

Reluctantadult · 04/08/2022 17:27

@MrsTerryPratchett sounds great, I'm in. Do any countries have this? I want to look it up. Cannot believe how this country is run.

Re-join the EU

MsFogi · 04/08/2022 17:27

Ensure online companies pay taxes to represent the sales/income they make in the UK, cut back on what all companies can set off against tax and give families employing (eg cleaner, childcare) a tax break on those payments (and ensure that everyone who is being paid is declaring that income and paying tax on it).

VaginaRegina · 04/08/2022 17:28

Ban private education.

Reluctantadult · 04/08/2022 17:28

@Baldrickhasaplan any chance you could be PM?

MsFogi · 04/08/2022 17:28

Oh and rejoin the EU and introduced proportional representation (we have to get rid of this two-party government that does not work any more).

Slowlyslippingaway · 04/08/2022 17:29

Ban second homes and Investment properties.

We have a limited housing stock and houses should be homes, not investment vehicles. No one needs more than one !!

Doing that would lead to price corrections in the housing market and with the right support many more people could be home owners instead of living with the uncertainty and inflated cost of having to rent.

Another vote for UBI. I would also like to see a move to electrify everything asap and move to 100% renewables quicker

heldinadream · 04/08/2022 17:29

World government of mainly women (not averse to a few men, but I want it weighted in favour of women). International court to which every country has to comply, no exceptions, no arguments. Abolition of all weapons from the humblest gun to nuclear (I am aware that you cannot ban knives as we need them for other functions). War made illegal in all contexts. Rape punishable in all contexts. DNA database at birth so that all rape crimes are traceable.

That's where I'd start.

Supposedly the Scandi countries are more like this but start with PR and go from there.

Ilovesriracha · 04/08/2022 17:31

Secure, good quality housing for anyone who needs it and can't get a mortgage. This would also be rent controlled.
A basic so people don't have to worry about losing their home and can concentrate on improving their lives.
