If you could do something to sort out the country / world, what would it be? Your one magic wish. You can have more than one of you want, I'm not adverse to a green point plan!

Sorry, can't count.

Daisy03 · 04/08/2022 23:28

Properly taxing big corporations such as Amazon.
Less VAT on fuel.
Less newspaper articles frothing about whatever Meghan and Harry have been up to, and more looking at proper issues like just how many people are using food banks and how many will die this winter from fuel poverty.
More kindness.
If we can't rejoin the EU then at least come up with decent immigration policies to fill the recruitment crisis.
PR.
A general election.

Pool all the wealth and assets and redistribute it so everyone has the same amount.

A proper taxation strategy, with no avoidance, and the ridiculously high earners paying substantially more than the lower paid, and excessive profits and bonuses taxed more heavily.

So no pensions ISAs, personal tax-free allowance and so on? That’s certainly radical.

High earners already do pay far more than lower earners as a fraction of their income.

Dissolve the Tory party. In fact make it illegal. There. Sorted!

How would that change anything? The current Conservative MPs and members would just create a new party.

Pool all the wealth and assets and redistribute it so everyone has the same amount.

Remove all incentive for work or taking risks to set up businesses...

If the govt is serious about levelling up, they should consider state funded driving lessons as part of sixth form/further education. So many kids miss out on apprenticeships that would improve their life chances, simply because their parents don't have the financial means to teach them to drive.

Complete phasing out of music, fictional tv shows, films, soaps, ect replaced by educational programs.

WTF?

StickWithYSL · 05/08/2022 01:14

Make companies pay tax, fully. No loopholes.

We have that in Scotland and Northern Ireland. Yet Not all problems solved…

No, but you don't have the problem of a minority government holding your country hostage. Sturgeon has a genuine majority - that is democracy. The progress made by the Alliance - again that is democracy.

We need democracy for Westminster too. Then we deal with what comes after.

Stop voting for local MPs, let people vote for a party. Political parties can say what they will do when they have a majority.

MPs will be selected by something similar to selection for jury service and be from the area they live in. Once selected they can choose which party to join orbserve as an independent.

MPs not allowed to do any other work outside parliament unless it is voluntary.

PIITORNS · 05/08/2022 04:25

Magically eradicate Tories and their enablers.

garlictwist · 05/08/2022 04:28

Stop people driving any journeys under three miles unless they are disabled. People can use bikes, cargo bikes and e bikes, walk or public transport.

HappyHappyHermit · 05/08/2022 04:34

@garlictwist Tricky round here with children when you live on a steep hill and there are no buses etc. Public transport would have to change a lot for this to be viable. We walk if it is a mile or less, but 3 would be too far.

Hawkmother · 05/08/2022 05:03

Renationalise our critical infrastructure systems. A lot of people are talking about more renewables. Did you know that there are tonnes of smaller renewables projects that don’t get built? I have worked in with farms wanting a single turbine to become carbon neutral and to improve profits by exporting excess power.

The state of the electricity grid is such that many of these projects fall by the wayside because there’s been no investment to make the rural grid suitable to take electricity the “other” way (I.e. not centrally generated). You can sometimes get a grid connection in 5 years for a half million quid fee - sometimes not at all!

Considering the energy companies that own the grid are making £££ profits and you can’t shop around I find this completely unacceptable.

I imagine this situation is repeated across many industries where private companies have been given custody of important public assets.

billysboy · 05/08/2022 06:12

Have mobile phone signal blockers that can be used at work and school so that people concentrate on their work rather than their phone

Bluebellsand · 05/08/2022 06:47

I would use my genie wish to delete the country debt, but not erase the memory of it.

We need to teach proper money management and budgeting in schools from an early age.

tiger2691 · 05/08/2022 07:09

Pay everyone the same wage

Sockwomble · 05/08/2022 07:18

"Stop people driving any journeys under three miles unless they are disabled. People can use bikes, cargo bikes and e bikes, walk or public transport."

Would make life for carers who don't have the luxury of leisure time.

JeanBodel · 05/08/2022 07:29

For me it's housing. So much of the grinding poverty I've seen is down to inadequate housing. Everyone should have a house big enough for their family, in decent repair.

Sockwomble · 05/08/2022 07:30

Getting rid of the Internet would mean people would not be able to buy the things they need. Some people cannot go into shops and if you need specialist equipment/products those things are not sold on the high street.

bjjgirl · 05/08/2022 07:37

Pay people to get sterilised, a tax break or pay out. Would reduce the population so would be better for climate change, stop the cycle of addicts having kids to be taken straight into care, be a bit of an income boost etc etc

Obviously I would say you need to either have 1 child in care or be aged over 25 to qualify.

lollipoprainbow · 05/08/2022 07:38

Proper affordable housing for people paying extortionate rent but who can't get a mortgage despite paying twice what the mortgage payment would be in rent, really pisses me off.

lollipoprainbow · 05/08/2022 07:41

*Ban second homes and Investment properties.

We have a limited housing stock and houses should be homes, not investment vehicles. No one needs more than one !!

Doing that would lead to price corrections in the housing market and with the right support many more people could be home owners instead of living with the uncertainty and inflated cost of having to rent.*

And then I'd have nowhere to live as I can't afford to be a home owner.
