If you could do something to sort out the country / world, what would it be? Your one magic wish. You can have more than one of you want, I'm not adverse to a green point plan!

This is mine too. Eradicate the "affordability test" (sorry not sure of the technical name) on the grounds that mothers don't get to decide if continuing to feed and clothe their child is affordable or not. Charge them 50% and if they won't pay when they could in theory, send them to prison.

Actually mothers do have the option of giving up their child for adoption, so fair's fair, that option should exist for fathers too.

Criminalize deadbeat ‘dads’ (ie sperm donors) who are more than happy to father a child but then absolve themselves of all responsibility. Make them responsible for 50% of all the child’s costs until age 21. Funds taken at source like tax and NI. Minimum threshold way higher than it is now. The vilification of single mothers is abhorrent, as is the drain on the state purse when there are men out there perfectly able to fund their offspring, they simply choose (and are allowed) not to.

Absolutely this

I'd have an energy revolution. The aim would be to generate all the energy we need without needing to buy it from other countries. Relying on other countries means we're vulnerable to geo-political problems hiking the cost of energy, and it means we are sending our money to sometimes unsavoury regimes, when we could be enriching our own economy with it instead.

This would involve:

  1. absolutely fucking tonnes of renewable energy - offshore wind, floating off shore wind, tidal, solar on as many rooftops and car parks as possible.

  2. loads of insulation, the cheapest energy to generate is the energy you don't have to generate anymore cos you've saved it

  3. electrification of all the things - we shouldn't be burning anything. This means instead of gas/oil boilers, gas hobs and petrol in cars, we have heat pumps, electric boilers, infrared radiators, electric cars, electric motorbikes and induction hobs.

  4. invest in the associated skills, industries and supply chains the energy revolution needs.e.g. training heat pump engineers, or funding hydrogen research groups in universities, or setting up lithium mines and refineries in Cornwall (actually is a thing - idea is to use abandoned tin mines).

In addition to the financial, economic and security advantages we would also put a big dent in the problem of climate change and massively reduce air pollution.

Actually mothers do have the option of giving up their child for adoption, so fair's fair, that option should exist for fathers too.

In the UK, both birth parents (unless one or both are dead, officially missing, or legally incapable) have to give consent for the child to be put up for adoption. If they cannot agree, a court can rule that the child would be at unacceptable risk if adoption didn't proceed.

I'd give mental health services the money they need to stop caring for people in the community who NEED to be in hospital, under supervision, for reassurance and help with meds , self care , and to stop them accessing illegal drugs .

Where I work there are 9 beds available at any one time , so other agencies try to pick up the pieces and it does t work .
There is no commons sense approach. It must cost more in police / ambulance because they ring daily , 999 . Or more than daily . They need help . And help
Costs money .

There was a murder here yesterday by a man allegedly with mental health issues - the details are horrendous.
"Care" in the community does not work for all mental health patients .

Wealth distribution

Understandable, but then how long before society's the same, as some save, some spend, then some will invest, and a few generations ahead, you'll have similar situations to how society's is now ?

Cismyfatarse · 04/08/2022 19:27

Really, genuinely prioritise education. Free to all for as long as it is needed / wanted. Including a grant for food / rent. Make schools all superb and base education on research not ideology. Ensure teachers are highly paid and highly skilled.

With education the rest will follow.

User135644 · 04/08/2022 19:27

Stop electing the Tories.

Then about 50 other things.

HauntingScream · 04/08/2022 19:29

Out of interest, how would UBI work?
Would people still be better off working or would people just choose not to work?

I don't believe anyone should be struggling to pay for bills or buy food but I do believe that people, if they are able, should be contributing by taking part in a functional society.

basically the residents of town called eureka, but rolled out across the globe.

After an election let the opposition run the country.
They always know exactly what the government is doing wrong.

Considering how those mediums, effect various people's emotional states, then realistically it's better for a more level balance of emotions, that may also lead to better mental health overall.

More social housing.
Stop second home ownership.

Ammonites · 04/08/2022 19:54

Bike lanes everywhere like in The Netherlands then kids cycle to their local school, which is properly financed, so there is no more good school/bad school catchment. Invest in education for all, these are the future tax payers fgs.

(Rejoin EU which will not happen for a decade + but will have to happen eventually)
