Hot or cold custard

SuperlativeOxymoron · 02/08/2022 22:59

DH and I are having a late night pud with a glass of red and while dishing up have got into the debate of hot or cold custard with a warm pudding (we have syrup sponge if that sways anyone)

I'm a big fan of cold custard with warm puddings (sponge, crumble etc) but DH prefers his warm. Obviously I can portion it out and heat his while keeping mine cold, but who is right?

Is custard better hot or cold?

Definitely cold for me but DH has to have it hot

Icecreamandapplepie · 02/08/2022 23:00

Cold.

Especially with warm pud.

Margo34 · 02/08/2022 23:02

In Winter, always warm (hot!) custard.

In Summer, hot custard if made with powder, hot or cold if from a tin.

And never, ever with bananas!!!

Cold, but no one else here agrees with me

MomwasCasual · 02/08/2022 23:04

Cold. Always cold.

helloisitmeyourelookingfor · 02/08/2022 23:04

Hot unless it's in trifle or with bananas

EspeciallyDeIighted · 02/08/2022 23:04

Hot, I can't bear cold custard.

ouch321 · 02/08/2022 23:05

I've never heard of anyone eating cold custard.

Sounds like hangover eating when you just eat whatever you can find like cold curry etc. (not from experience just from what I've seen).

SuperlativeOxymoron · 02/08/2022 23:06

Ahh hadnt considered the type of custard. This was powder made yesterday and refrigerated to tonight. But yes freshly made is a hot choicebecause i want to eat it there and then.

What's wrong with bananas and custard @Margo34??

Although that's got to be a hot custard mix. Maybe I just like hot and cold combined?

Hot with a hot pudding.
Cold if on its own or with a dainty cake.

notprincehamlet · 02/08/2022 23:06

Cold with a hot pudding, hot with a cold pudding

EdithWeston · 02/08/2022 23:09

Hot with a hot pudding

Cold in trifle or as iles flottantes

Definitely cold when eaten with a spoon straight from the tin

Isausernameavailable · 02/08/2022 23:09

Hot, unless in trifle. We are not savages.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 02/08/2022 23:10

Cold with a hot pudding (definitely with syrup sponge or sticky toffee). Hot with a cold pudding like apple tart.

Leeds2 · 02/08/2022 23:37

I like to eat Ambrosia Devon Custard straight out of the tin. So cold. I can't wait around long enough to warm it up.

shinynewapple22 · 02/08/2022 23:54

Cold. Out of a can. Hate hot custard.

FilePhoto · 02/08/2022 23:59

Cold, ready made if I have to have it. Cream as a preference, ice cream as 2nd choice.

One of the reasons I never make custard is because I can't stand it hot.

BillyBobBear · 03/08/2022 00:02

Erurgh, no custard at all thanks!

We had a legendary row years ago when DH discovered that I can't bear custard. He was horrified. Went on about it for hours. In the end I snapped and told him to leave me alone about the fucking custard.

Even now, over 10 years later, he'll tell me he's going to get the "fucking custard" Grin

xsquared · 03/08/2022 00:04

Creme Brulee cold.
Cold custard in custard donuts.
Hot custard with crumble, put, sponge puddings etc.

Never heard of having liquid custard cold to serve with warm pudding! If you make it with powder and let it cool, it will congeal surely? So I guess you'd have to have it out of a can or carton.

AdaColeman · 03/08/2022 00:32

Cold custard, especially with fruit tart or poached fruit like rhubarb, cherries or pears.
< adds bananas to shopping order >

SirenSays · 03/08/2022 00:58

Blergh cold custard makes me think of school dinners

halfsiesonapotnoodle · 03/08/2022 00:59

Cold. Can't be bothered to heat it when I could be eating it. I'd eat yours OP and he can heat his own if he wants it hot. Why are you doing it?

MammaWeasel · 03/08/2022 01:02

Either. Both! I love love love custard!

alnawire · 03/08/2022 01:03

Hot for me, cold for DH

Dancinginthebasement91 · 03/08/2022 01:14

As cold and as thick as possible although I would also prefer my sponge cold too, please.
