Hot or cold custard

DH and I are having a late night pud with a glass of red and while dishing up have got into the debate of hot or cold custard with a warm pudding (we have syrup sponge if that sways anyone)

I'm a big fan of cold custard with warm puddings (sponge, crumble etc) but DH prefers his warm. Obviously I can portion it out and heat his while keeping mine cold, but who is right?

Is custard better hot or cold?

Hot, unless in trifle. We are not savages.

100% this

Kanaloa · 03/08/2022 19:44

Honestly I think custard is lovely either way. I like it warmed up but also cold. They do little pots of it now too so sometimes I send that in the kids’ packed lunches for their pudding!

Hot with syrup sponge. I like it cold but only to spoon into my greedy maw! Or in trifle...

So apparently I'm the only person in my family who likes cold custard...

Both my parents and inlaws told me it has to be heated, my mum actually looked at me like I'd kicked the dog when I said cold.

But I feel like the answers here are a balance of cold vs hot.

People really still use powdered custard?! Tinned/tetrapak ambrosia is the only way, either hot or cold.

EspeciallyDeIighted · 03/08/2022 20:13

I'm surprised so many use tinned, we've always used Bird's Powder, the one using milk not the instant. So it's always hot. If I wanted something cold with my pudding I'd have vanilla ice cream. As for skin 🤮

Uwillbelucky · 03/08/2022 20:19

Hot! But YABU to eat custard. Ewwww. So actually I abstain.

It’s not that surprising - look at the aisle in Tesco’s or Asda and how many tins of custard there are compared to boxes of powdered. Of course people are buying them, that’s why they sell them!

@SuperlativeOxymoron everything is wrong with bananas and custard!! 🤢

And don't get me started on the custard skin 🤢🤢

The correct answer.

TroysMammy · 03/08/2022 20:43

Hot custard on a hot sponge pudding. Cold custard only in a custard slice.

Pikafuckingwho · 03/08/2022 20:45

You have to have powdered custard hot.
On cold mince pies is my favourite.

Cold custard should only be served in the form of a Portuguese tart or one of those long doughnut things with it in the middle.

never out of a tin.

I’m a custard snob which is stupid really as I can’t cook for shit but make remarkable custard.

Agree you have to eat the hot one pretty quick as it congeales and that is repugnant.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 03/08/2022 21:05

Hot with cold pudding and cold with hot pudding. Sometimes hot with a hot pudding and sometimes cold with a cold pudding. Basically any way is fab. I love custard!

MintyGreenDream · 03/08/2022 21:10

Cold custard poured over a red hot pudding

PrezelwithMarmite · 03/08/2022 21:30

Cold.
Hot makes me heave.
Dh has hot cant stand cold

tobee · 03/08/2022 21:45

Either. Mostly have it cold as family too greedy to wait.

PinkBuffalo · 03/08/2022 21:46

Hot custard with banana chopped up in it is the only way I can eat banana

BooksAndHooks · 03/08/2022 21:52

I like both. I tend to have it warm if it’s the first time we are eating a dessert and then cold with any left overs.
