Can I just say he's an utter fucking legend? Love him. After Life 1 and 2 helped me through a really shit time... now watching Derek and it's making me cry my eyes out and laugh so much it literally hurts. I wish I could be mates with his gang of friends on there. My kind of people. Swearing, uncouth but kind and non judgemental as fuck.

He's not just a comedian he's a brilliant emotional actor too.

Go Ricky!! Love Kerry Godliman too.

I love him too!

embolass · 31/07/2022 21:02

Agree he’s brilliant at conveying the emotions in Afterlife, then the contrast with Office and Extras. Extras my favourite, watched it again during lockdown and had forgot just how funny it was 😂

ColinRobinsonsfamiliar · 31/07/2022 21:02

Everything, it’s just everything he does that I enjoy.

I absolutely love the way he is with celebrities at the awards, he says what we are all thinking.

Derek and Afterlife, absolute fabulousness.
Id like to go out for tea with him.

So good.

And his liberal use of the word cunt which is one of my person favourites.

CathyorClaire · 31/07/2022 21:03

The Office was comedy genius.

I literally used to cry laughing but dh would sit there inexplicably stony faced Hmm

I think Ricky might be a bit Marmite.

ItWasJustifiedHeWasACunt · 31/07/2022 21:06

Yes Extras! Keith Chegwin and Kate Winslet were brilliantly funny if that's your humour. The Big Brother speech had me crying too when he was saying sorry to Maggie 😭

I didn't get him and then...

CherryRipe1 · 31/07/2022 21:09

He's brilliant. I liked him even more when my mate told me he'd done alot for a dog charity she worked for.

ToffeeNotCoffee · 31/07/2022 21:22

He's bone idle. However, I admire how much money and adulation he has for doing nothing. Who else could have got away with it like he has ? No wonder he's so smug. He's taken us all for a ride.

(His sidekick grinning, smirking Stephen Merchant is no better.) Well his portrayal of a murderer was good.

Idiot Abroad - R.J. got paid for giggling and laughing at his own jokes. SM just sat there.

Extras - R.J. got paid for giggling and laughing at his own jokes.

The Office - I never laughed once. I suspect R.J. wasn't even acting i.e. that's what he's actually like.

Sparklingbrook · 31/07/2022 21:25

I like him too, I also love Stephen Merchant and Karl Pilkington. I enjoyed The Office and Extras.

ColinRobinsonsfamiliar · 31/07/2022 21:34

Is this thread not entitled “appreciation “ rather than “criticism “ ?

Yes but this is MN, you can't appreciate anything without people telling you why you can't- remember.

Vargas · 31/07/2022 21:37

Love him. He sometimes says things that I don't agree with, but he's phenomenally intelligent and doesn't take any shit.

Vargas · 31/07/2022 21:38

And he makes me laugh like a drain...Grin

HeyHeyer · 31/07/2022 21:42

Love him! I didn't, then suddenly I did. Never really got The Office (I did give it a go) but Derek, Extras and all his newer stand-up are just so well done.

I also enjoy Karl Pilkington - just love the way he thinks! Less keen on SM.

LiesDoNotBecomeUs · 31/07/2022 21:49

He is very clever - and very funny. He makes what he does look easy but his timing ...and carefully calculated use of language - well!

I love his stand-up and After-life. I didn't manage to get through two episodes of The Office but would like to try 'Extras'.

Featuredcreature · 31/07/2022 21:53

I appreciate him, but don't find him or his humour even slightly funny and he is a tedious cunt about the atheist thing, like who even gives a fuck. He also criticises from his ivory tower.

Iamthewombat · 31/07/2022 21:53

I don’t know why he attracts such dislike. I think that he does a great job of making unlikeable characters, strangely likeable. Who knew that we’d be rooting for David Brent at the end of The Office? The Life on the Road film about Brent did something similar, and that is hard to do!

ItWasJustifiedHeWasACunt · 31/07/2022 21:54

Laughing one minute, in floods the next. The characters, storylines, comments, jokes, background, moral, even the music. He is so incredibly talented. He also adores animals x

I didn't expect to like him quite so much, what with being a lifelong Christian and all but nope, he's hilarious and very clever. Afterlife is tough to watch through the sad bits though.

SergeiL · 31/07/2022 21:57

@ToffeeNotCoffee who is RJ?

AgathaBrazen · 31/07/2022 21:59

Yes he's absolutely brilliant. I love his stand up, too. Absolutely crying with laughter.

ImAvingOops · 31/07/2022 22:00

Afterlife is genius. And I admire his dgaf approach to celebrities.

ToffeeNotCoffee · 31/07/2022 22:03

I can't stand his, 'cause I say so' attitude. His, 'I'm rich and famous, that makes everyone else a loser' attitude.

ToffeeNotCoffee · 31/07/2022 22:06

@SergeiL

RJ is Ricky Gervais. I spell phonetically.
