I was stabbing around in the dark for what seemed like ages, but then crawled to a very rough area, got a related word and then was there in three more (which, on reading back that sentence, sounds like a weird pub-crawl, but I hope you know what I really mean!)

Nope. The bit in bracket was the disambiguation, fastener.

It was “nail (fastener)”.

Sometimes the simple ones are more difficult (I’m looking at you “screw” and “desk”).
