All my doors & windows are open so why isn't my house cooling down?

It's still baking hot inside my house. 30s block construction. Why is it still so hot indoors?

ChuckBerrysBoots · 19/07/2022 20:49

Because it’s still hotter outside than in your house?

GirlInACountrySong · 19/07/2022 20:49

because its just as hot outside

if not hotter

Mine is unbearable and I am near the coast in Norfolk. Have just had to lie down all day. Can’t move. Not helped by massive period starting today.

RuthW · 19/07/2022 20:50

We have just opened ours even though the temp is 32 outside and 30 in as it's really windy. We are getting a warm wind in the house now.

Crackercrazy · 19/07/2022 20:51

It’s still 32 degrees outside where I am and 30 in the house. We’re going to have till 11pm at least before we can open our windows/doors. Roll on tomorrow

Ndd135632 · 19/07/2022 20:51

I feel like I am in a giant hairdryer. Was meant to be in London today but didn’t travel and thought would be cooler on coast in Norfolk. Bloody Nora it’s not. Hottest place is round corner in Lincolnshire. But I am near coast ffs.

Butterfly44 · 19/07/2022 20:52

The advice is to CLOSE all windows and blinds because outside is warmer than inside. With them open you're allowing hot air to come in. Come evening time when cooler then open then.

AnguaResurgam · 19/07/2022 20:52

Its about even-steven temperatures inside and outside, but I think its cooling down outside. Also there's a breeze and it feels better with the window open and a bit of air movement.

PrimrosesandPears · 19/07/2022 20:54

Opening windows and doors actually increases the temp on a hot day / night like this. It needs to be cooler outside than in for the windows to help. Close them, have a lukewarm or cool (not cold) shower and lie in front of a fan. Reopen them at about 5am when the air is cooler.

Hollyhead · 19/07/2022 20:54

You should keep it all closed until the outdoor temperature is lower than indoors….

Ndd135632 · 19/07/2022 20:55

I an not sure this open it close windows and doors makes any difference honestly. Need air con. It’s mental hot still.

Mybeautifulfriend22 · 19/07/2022 20:56

My windows and doors have been closed for two days because it’s been hotter outside than inside. We have a fan blowing coolish air in the front room. House is 26 degrees outside it’s still 30.

Ostryga · 19/07/2022 20:56

It’s still 30 degrees! It’s basically the height of a normal summer day at 9pm.

Wet a towel and lay under it, it’s very cooling. Thunderstorms tomorrow so at least the end is in sight.

Mybeautifulfriend22 · 19/07/2022 20:57

Curtains all closed too. It defo feels cooler inside of I’ve been outside for a period of time .

MaryJoLisa · 19/07/2022 20:57

My thermometer says it's 33.4 inside my house. It's raining outside. My internal temperature is about 60. If I haven't lost a stone by morning I shall be disappointed, this is like the maddest sauna I've ever been in.

mrsfollowill · 19/07/2022 20:57

I'm in S Yorks- we hit 40c today and it's dropped to 27 c now - we had very blowy hot winds from 5pm and it seems cooler air is gradually starting to flow- there is a coolish breeze now. To be honest it has been so hot it's going to take more than a breeze to cool everywhere down. The entire house has been baked for 2 days so it needs sustained cooler weather and a good soaking of rain to bring it back to normal. My poor garden looks frazzled- the lawn is like shredded wheat!

carefullycourageous · 19/07/2022 20:59

My thermometer in my room says 27 degrees and the Met says the outside temp is 29 degrees - so if I open my windows it will get hotter not cooler. Trying to be patient!

Ndd135632 · 19/07/2022 21:01

@MaryJoLisa yep still 33 degrees inside. Am just lying down.

Babyroobs · 19/07/2022 21:09

Just starting to cool now here in the Midlands, coolish breeze coming through the open window, but inside I am just overheating and sweating profusely.

Evenstar · 19/07/2022 21:19

It’s 26°C outside but still 29°C indoors, our house usually takes a few days to cool down after very hot weather. Our house is Edwardian and the bricks are single skin on the upper floor, they seem to act like a storage heater and carry on releasing heat.

shedwithivy · 19/07/2022 21:21

The wind today feels like that weird hot air that a bus makes when it sets off... we did have a small rain shower earlier though so hopefully that's heading in from the west

eatingasatsuma · 19/07/2022 21:29

Last night when it was dark enough I opened all the curtains and windows upstairs and set my alarm for 3am to close them all again so it wasn't light to wake the DC. That worked and I'll be doing the same tonight. Just need to stay awake long enough for it to get dark....!

WeAreBob · 19/07/2022 21:33

Why would you think your house would cool down with the windows open when it is just as hot outside? There is no cool hair.

If you've had your curtains open all day then you're indoors hasn't had any shade and will have heated up. Nothing you can do about it now.

LizzieSiddal · 19/07/2022 21:36

Your house retains heat for several hours even when it’s much cooler outside.

Today our outside temp went from 33 this morning to 25 this afternoon and 21 now. It’s still 29 in our bedroom 😞

MissDollyMix · 19/07/2022 21:40

Ugh! I’m so hot! It’s 27 outside the house and 28 inside so I’ve thrown open all the windows but it’s so still, there’s no breeze. The upstairs of the house is still 30++. Kids are planning on sleeping on the living room floor again tonight. What a life we lead!
