All my doors & windows are open so why isn't my house cooling down?

It's still baking hot inside my house. 30s block construction. Why is it still so hot indoors?

Downstairs is 31 and upstairs 35. East coast Norfolk. Can’t stand this.

It's just, in the last 40 mins or so , started to feel a bit more pleasant outside. Cooler, we've had a little bit of rain and there's a breeze so I've opened everything up, but I agree it's not making a difference indoors.

WhoWants2Know · 19/07/2022 21:53

Just now opened the windows, but it's going to take a while to feel the difference at this rate

I an not sure this open it close windows and doors makes any difference honestly. Need air con. It’s mental hot still.

It makes a huge difference. I've been able to keep the house at 26 all day which was positively chilly compared to the 39 outside.

liveforsummer · 19/07/2022 22:00

It's become quite humid now (I'm in Scotland where it's far worse but more humid than it's been in England the last few days too). There's no breeze or air circulation and it's still very warm so warm air can't cool other wam air

Ndd135632 · 19/07/2022 22:04

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor I have lots of glass. If I had closed all windows and doors I would have baked.

So do I, you need to close the blinds/ curtains too.

I did upstairs and it was unbearable. It’s like being in a glasshouse with everything shut :-(

Eeksteek · 19/07/2022 22:07

It’s lovely outside now. I have to have a door open for the dogs (one is sick and has profuse diarrhoea!) so I’ve had the door on the shadiest side of the house all day. I think it has made it hotter, but we have had a breeze which feels cooler. Interestingly the dining room which is completely shut up and on the west side is coolest. But then my bedroom (on the east side) is also completely shut up. Looks like there may be more to it…..

Am still sweating. Have a big perimenopausal period. So have just written the entire day off 🙌🏻

MajorCarolDanvers · 19/07/2022 22:09

Close doors and windows and shut the curtains.

Although it's prob too late for you now as you've let all hot air from outside in.

tootiredtoocare · 19/07/2022 22:14

Try wetting a sheet/pillowcase depending upon the size of your window, and hanging it from the curtain rail in front of the opening. Theoretically, it cools down any breeze. It made a little difference for us, but there's not a lot of breeze at the moment!

doubleshotcappuccino · 19/07/2022 22:14

In London .. absolutely boiling still ... windows wide open and fan with bowls of water behind because that apparently helps. So uncomfortably warm ...

Ndd135632 · 19/07/2022 22:14

What I don’t get though is - if you walk into a glass house on a hot day when everything is shut then it is unbearable. That’s how my house would have been today if I had kept everything shut. Lots of glass.

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 19/07/2022 22:15

It's just reached the point where it's officially cooler outside than inside. I have opened all the windows and doors and am sat on my deckchair in the garden enjoying the breeze.

Ndd135632 · 19/07/2022 22:16

Going to sleep in guest room :-(

I opened the window upstairs in my bedroom about an hour ago as the temperature outside had dropped and there is a cool breeze but it hasn’t made any difference and it is still feeling very hot and stuffy inside. I don’t have a thermometer to measure the temperature but if I stick my hand out the window it’s definitely cooler out there than in here. I guess it takes a while for air to begin to circulate from outside to in through the relatively small opening of a window and unfortunately the breeze is blowing in the wrong direction to come through the window!

You need a good cross breeze so open bedroom windows and door and open the windows in the room or landing opposite too so the breeze goes in one window and out the other.

Mine is unbearable and I am near the coast in Norfolk. Have just had to lie down all day. Can’t move. Not helped by massive period starting today.

Feel ya... mine started Sunday, always bad for the first 3 days... so on the hottest days ever... I’ve felt like my insides were burning from inside out. 😩

femfemlicious · 19/07/2022 22:23

Ive been nekkid all day and still boiling. Pendulum breasts swinging everywhere. My vag area is very sweaty...TMI😁

SheWoreYellow · 19/07/2022 22:23

We kept the windows and curtains shut until it was warmer inside than outside, but it’s so still - not a hint of a breeze, that the house isn’t really cooling.

Eeksteek · 19/07/2022 22:24

Everything shut includes curtains/blinds too. And you house will be at least partly insulated walls.

It’s not an exact science (well it is, but there are lots of variables) but it did seem to work here.

I think the issue in the UK is that it doesn’t usually matter if our houses heat up. They can easily lose that heat overnight, and start from their baseline again the next morning. But with hot nights (like in Europe) they can’t. So todays heat built on yesterdays. Although the outside temps were similar, my house felt much hotter today.

ah. So it was.

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 19/07/2022 22:25

It’s crazy isn’t it - so looking forward to 5 in the morning when it’s 18 degrees 😂

Minniem2020 · 19/07/2022 22:26

I've opened all mine now so I'm hoping it'll cool down soon.
I don't usually sleep with the windows open as the bastard seagulls keep me awake but it's either that or melt.

Unfortunately it’s a small flat and no other windows upstairs or I would try that! Have got the bedroom door open but probably not that helpful as I can’t open any downstairs windows as they are big enough someone could easily climb through.
