Lidl recommendations / things to avoid

Could be wrong but can't find an up to date lidl thread.

Recently started shopping at Lidl and so far have really liked:
Everything from the bakery especially the brownies
Deluxe yogurts (We've had the layered caramel, toffee, lemon and strawb)
Steaks
Strawberries
Donut peaches
Deluxe tomato's
Cloudy lemonade & strawberry lemonade

Haven't tried any household things or toiletries etc yet.

Anything else we should try?

Their 'premium' pizzas.
Gelatelli ice creams.

SatinHeart · 08/07/2022 19:51

Oh I love the flat peaches! I think lots of places do them now but Lidl was definitely the first on my area.

We like:

Mini cucumbers
Cheese slices (cheaper and nicer than other supermarkets)
Kabanos - long thin polish(?) cured sausages
Rye bread
Dried fruit
Nuts

Wooden toys

Their dishwasher tablets always used to be good but not bought them recently

I think Christmas food is where they really knock it out of the park though!

concernedguineapig · 08/07/2022 19:53

@SatinHeart I think I could live off flat peaches. They're so nice!!

their bakery is amazing
I really like their sunblock
christmas products is of course the to-go-place
fruit I tend to find has a very short shelf life

Isittimef0rbedyet · 08/07/2022 19:57

Theres a great selection of multipack ice creams and ice lollies.

My fave thing in there is the whole nut dark choc bar.

Lemon and lime is very good.

I like most of the meats to be honest.

SimonaRazowska · 08/07/2022 19:58

I like their potato salad , it's very tangy though, much more acidic than British potato salad

Cold meats

Frozen discs of dauphinois potatoes

Their fake Cornettos are nicer than real ones

Greek yoghurt

Things I don't like are their own butter (goes cheesy quickly), Alberto (or Alfredo? ) pizzas (the tomato sauce is very sugary) or sausages (bit rancid/off tasting to me)

Dilbertian · 08/07/2022 20:03

I don't like the nuts at Lidl. They always taste off to me.

But the individual bags of sweet 'n' salty popcorn (at the tills) are lovely.

ShinyPikachu · 08/07/2022 20:09

Do they still do the perfume that's a bit like one of the Chanel ones? I keep meaning to check when I'm in but I used to love that for a cheap day to day perfume.

Baby plum tomatoes and the tiny cucumbers

The pink box of washing powder, changed to it from pink Surf, clothes still smell amazing and wash well and it's a fraction of the cost.

DC love the Neo biscuits - basically like Oreos but come in little packs you can use in lunchboxes or picnics or whatever.

We like a lot of their versions of cereal too. Their version of Cheerios is the only one we DON'T like so far.

Their own brand bars of chocolate are great too and what I use for baking (as well as eating when I fancy a bit of chocolate). Not the cheap-cheap ones (which I think are 31p) but the ones that are around 45p (unless it's gone up recently).

Their own version of mini Mars bars are good too, very handy at Halloween as well.

JLQ1020 · 08/07/2022 20:13

Their own brand of special flakes are way way nicer than the Branded or any Tesco or Asda versions

Also their nappies are good.

TwoBlondes · 08/07/2022 20:15

During Italian week, the jars of small onions pickled in balsamic vinegar. I'd happily eat a jar in one go.

GuyFawkesDay · 08/07/2022 20:18

Their deluxe Lincolnshire sausages are fantastic

Decisionstomakenow · 08/07/2022 20:40

Avoid their WYX brand fairy liquid, absolutely shite

chilledbubble · 08/07/2022 20:42

Try everything really!

Trinity65 · 08/07/2022 20:44

Their own brand of Crisps
Ditto Pringles
Dark Chocolate (70% Cocoa) Large or smaller bars available
Their Liquorice Allsorts Version
Cats seem to like their own brand Cat Food and Cat Sticks
Sparkling or still Water (Sparkling Elderflower is lovely)
Garlic Slices
All Butter Cookies are lovely
At Christmas their Rum Balls are always top of my To Buy list

Drbrowns · 08/07/2022 20:46

They do a lovely caramelised red onion hummous. Also a smoked loin of pork that makes really tasty pulled pork. Ice pops are good, most of the bakery, and ready to heat sausage rolls, dishwasher tablets are good. Find they’re fruit goes off a lot quicker then Tesco though.

Moonshine5 · 08/07/2022 20:52

They had a steak tartare that was incredible.
The green smoothie mix (freezer) is good too.

Moonshine5 · 08/07/2022 20:53

No to their basic feta

Moonshine5 · 08/07/2022 20:55

@SatinHeart
"I think Christmas food is where they really knock it out of the park though!"

Completely agree

ReviewingTheSituation · 08/07/2022 20:56

Greek yogurt (not greek style)
Weissbier (if you like that kind of beer)
Salmon (from the deluxe range)

MarmiteCoriander · 08/07/2022 20:59

I like the low GI seeded cob loaf from the bakery. Actually anything fresh in the bakery is usually good except the mini pizza breads which a doughy and stodgy

Vintage cheddar

Basics are great and reasonably prices- tinned tomatoes, basmati rice, pasta, tissues, baked beans and ketchup etc

Some times the themed weekly specials actually aren't better value. For example during Greek week- the special Greek olive oil is more expensive than the same Greek Olive that they sell all the time! During the XXL week, again, check that the item is actually better value than their regular range

I find the fruit and veg is hit and miss and doesnt last that long

purplecorkheart · 08/07/2022 21:02

Not sure if you have them in the UK but lidl in Ireland have these Rocky Road Squares called Broadwick. They are yum

HelebethH · 08/07/2022 21:02

Their Berries and Cherries and Seriously nutty muesli. Cheaper and better than the ones in a b ox with a county in their name.
W5 Floor wipes. Really big and use them to clean sink and toilet.
Hi juice squash
Greek yoghurt is really creamy
Tinned cherry tomatoes in juice. Beats premium tin tomatoes

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 08/07/2022 21:08

Tomato ketchup
And yes to the potato salad , it's more tangy , like yoghurt than mayo and was delicious (not bought it for a while though)
Some really good nut roasts (frozen)

MissBridgetJones · 08/07/2022 21:22

The Brie, pretty much any of the Deluxe cheese - but mostly the Brie. It's the business x

MissBridgetJones · 08/07/2022 21:26

Also the tinned cherry tomatoes. Bung in a pan with garlic, lidl Italian olive oil, Chili flake, salt and pepper. Prawns. Linguine.
Dinner in a jiffy.
