Lidl recommendations / things to avoid

Could be wrong but can't find an up to date lidl thread.

Recently started shopping at Lidl and so far have really liked:
Everything from the bakery especially the brownies
Deluxe yogurts (We've had the layered caramel, toffee, lemon and strawb)
Steaks
Strawberries
Donut peaches
Deluxe tomato's
Cloudy lemonade & strawberry lemonade

Haven't tried any household things or toiletries etc yet.

Anything else we should try?

I go to Lidl about once a month.
I love the plants and the cut flowers.
Fruit and vegetables are good if you plan to eat next day at the latest, though potatoes last well.
I love their chocolate, milk chocolate and hazelnuts is really good.

I am disappointed to find that the salmon isn’t good.

the dog had most of the last fillet I cooked. My fault for usually buying it in M&S! ☺️

mnahmnah · 08/07/2022 21:29

We like the lasagne in the fresh section and the vegetarian pies

FlickyCrumble · 08/07/2022 21:31

I would say cheese, pesto and peanuts and also sticky toffee pudding. Viakal is half the price as well.

avoid squash, coleslaw, washing up liquid.

PritiPatelsMaker · 08/07/2022 21:32

The DDog loves the mini cucumbers (we do too) Wink

I love Lidl, I can't think of any things that are dodgy although I think we did have a couple of dreadful frozen pies once upon a time.

To me their cornflakes are nicer than Kelloggs' and are the only supermarket ones I'll buy, having tried them all! The cereal bars are lovely too.

seaUrchinOne · 08/07/2022 21:35

I don't tend to do a big shop there, as there is hardly any staff on checkout, but things I do like is their ham, croissants, handwash, the rose and rhubarb is lovely. Lemon sorbet. It's more for connivence as it's by local shop but tbh I don't find it cheaper than going to Tesco.

BotterMon · 08/07/2022 21:39

Their face cream, sun products, shampoo and shower gel are good too. Cien Q10 face cream was voted one of the best.
Dry meats/saucisson/sliced cheeses - gouda/Emmental are good. Lasagna is very edible and also their garlic and bake at home breads.
They used to do a straciatella yoghurt with chocolate bits in which was rather lush.
At Christmas I go a bit Lidl mad. Oh and I always pick up something essential really not needed from the centre aisle.....

ShinyPikachu · 08/07/2022 23:18

I knew I forgot something. I agree with the ready made lasagne. It's not as tasty as when I make my own from scratch but it's cheap and absolutely no effort and even my fussy DD eats it.

As another pp said, the cut flowers are great too. You can get a huge bouquet for a good price and they last the longest out of any supermarket flowers I've ever had. I used to always buy them for my grandmother when we went to visit and she loved them.

concernedguineapig · 08/07/2022 23:18

@ShinyPikachu they do one that smelled like coco madamoiselle to me!

I'll try the washing powder as we always use pink surf!

That's the one! It obviously doesn't last as long as Chanel perfume does but for the price you don't mind having to top up or it's perfect if you're only going out for a short time and don't need it to last.

WishILivedInThrushGreen · 08/07/2022 23:23

Formil washing powder is brilliant, for us , anyway.

You only need a small amount and my husband, who is allergic to most washing products is ok with it.

We don't buy anything else from there.

shandon14 · 08/07/2022 23:35

Another vote for fizzy water with elderflower.

Quality in Lidl is great. Not a fan of their frozen convenience food like pizzas but will try most everything else.

Love the random variety when they have themed weeks. Always buy ginormous marshmallows for the barbecue during the summer USA weeks and amazing honey and kalamata olives in Greek week...

SquirrelSoShiny · 08/07/2022 23:38

Don't get the dishwasher tablets! I was convinced our dishwasher was broken last year because everything stank when it came out. Turned out it was lidl dw tablets.

This last week I noticed it again. Sure enough - bloody lidl tablets again. They are now on the banned list.

SweatyChamoisPad · 08/07/2022 23:43

Their deluxe Parmesan is the best I’ve ever tasted. It’s just the right amount of salt.

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 08/07/2022 23:48

Their light mayonnaise is weird. Happy with everything else.Their steak is blimming gorgeous. I’m more of an Aldi person though.

violetglow7 · 09/07/2022 00:00

Love a fair few items from Lidl...

The big honey greek yoghurt tub
Creamy deluxe coleslaw
The bakery brownies (omg 🤤)
Their fancy cornish salted butter
Soured cream (proper thick stuff!)
Their dairy UHT squirty cream (much nicer than branded ones)
Peppered mackerel fillets (so much cheaper)

Thestoppedfan · 09/07/2022 00:14

The protein puddings are amazing (but everyone has realised that so they are like gold dust now!).
The smoked peppered ham
The massive bag of red apples for £3
The sugar free muesli
The cheesy croquettes

Gingerkittykat · 09/07/2022 00:29

The red pesto is fantastic, better than the premium jars from other supermarkets.

I love Greek week, especially the huge cheese or cheese and spinach filled spiral pastries.

The mushroom filled gnocchi is only available in a certain week and is amazing.

Their posh butter with sea salt crystals.

The pretzels in the fresh bakery bit also lovely.

The only thing I don't like is their chilli flakes which were utterly tasteless.

PritiPatelsMaker · 09/07/2022 06:45

DH particularly likes their French roast ground coffee.

Newnormal99 · 09/07/2022 07:01

I just bought some apple pie ice cream in their American week and that's lovely.

My daughter daughters live there ice cream wafted sandwich things dipped in chocolate at one end.

I buy the rice crackers - sainsburys do them as well (diff brand) but not always available.

Futball13 · 09/07/2022 07:23

The 50 dishwasher tabs in a box thought were great, didn't notice smell, prob will now haha.

Also like fruit muesli and Swiss style muesli, I mix them. Chopped tomatoes. Pasta, rice. All butter cookies. Nappies. Pure orange. Red berries flakes.

Avoid packaged corn on cub, not nice and doesn't last.

emmathedilemma · 09/07/2022 07:33

Their almond milk is disgusting, tastes like water with almond essence added to it. Like nothing I’ve had from any other brands.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 09/07/2022 07:39

Coffee pods are great.

PennineWayinSlingbacks · 09/07/2022 07:39

I'm a big fan of their dairy and home baking ranges but don't rate the fresh fruit and veg - never seems to last.

Happymum12345 · 09/07/2022 08:00
