What supermarket brands are nicer than big brand items?

Greenstar22 · 06/07/2022 05:54

With food prices going up I'm swapping brands for supermarket own brands.
Heinz salad cream for lidl batts brand and can't taste the difference but tried cheerios for Lidl multigrain hoops and no one liked them.
So any good cheaper swaps?

Danepak from Lidl, tastes just like Lurpak for half the cost!

TwoMonthsOff · 19/07/2022 18:47

@FourTeaFallOut
haha welcome 😭
do you think the Lidl marketing team missed a trick, or it was pushing copyright boundaries ? 😭

FourTeaFallOut · 19/07/2022 18:49

I think you should send it in for a life time supply.

TwoMonthsOff · 19/07/2022 18:49

@PleaseYourselfandEatTheCrusts
I work with a some Polish people and they RAVE about that mayonnaise and stock up when it’s on the theme week

TwoMonthsOff · 19/07/2022 18:51

@FourTeaFallOut
I’m not sure… it may start Colin the caterpillar-gate all over again 😭

PleaseYourselfandEatTheCrusts · 19/07/2022 18:51

TwoMonthsOff - It's worth raving about, honestly. Smile

shivbo2014 · 19/07/2022 18:52

Asda own mint cornettos

MayISuggestSomeThickCutSteakChipsToGoWithThat · 19/07/2022 18:53

I used to be a Heinz salad cream only snob, but I quite like Aldis own. I actually prefer their own brand Mayo too. Haven't tried the ketchup. Might have to do though cos even I've noticed it doesn't taste like it used to do. The Aldi version of krave are nice and so are the Aldi version of bliss yogurts. The only thing Aldi let me down on was hot cross buns at Easter. No Aldi I don't want silly fandangled rhubarb and custard, strawberries and cream or chocolate and salted caramel hot cross buns I want a normal bog standard one!!

TwoMonthsOff · 19/07/2022 18:57

@PleaseYourselfandEatTheCrusts
I think I’ve seen a few stray (massive) jars I will get one, you know in the area where they mix up the various bits of stock from the theme weeks ? It’s an interesting place as often lots of reductions too.
sadly there is no Provolone cheese left over from Italian week, but that’s a whole new thread 🧀it’s flipping amazing and I’m buying the lot next time

Tesco baked beans are the best beans ever. Aldi knock off biscoff lollies are great as are the knock off chocolate- titan - mars and racer - snickers.
Also any supermarket seeded loaf is nice and around 80p a loaf cheaper then warburtons!

thefirstmrsrochester · 19/07/2022 19:18

Aldi par baked sourdough bread.
Lidl dolmades. Just over £1 for a tin. Better than deli bought ones.
Also those bottles of fake limonatta from Aldi.
All of the Continental cheeses, both Aldi and Lidl. Aldi black pepper oatcakes.

DockOTheBay · 19/07/2022 19:26

Aldi Moser Roth chocolate (actually their cheaper stuff is pretty great too and no palm oil)

Aldi halloumi -less salty thank other varieties

Aldi chocolate mousse - the "finest" or whatever their top end one is, in individual pots

Aldi watermelon lollies are better than rowntrees and cheaper

Can you tell I shop in Aldi 🤣

deathofastrawberry · 19/07/2022 19:28

Co-op's own brand condiments are good.. the ketchup is similar to the thick Heinz one you get in the glass bottle. Also the normal mayonnaise and vegan mayonnaise just as good if not better than Hellmans

Lozza70 · 19/07/2022 19:33

Love Sainsburys tomato ketchup and salad cream. Their fruit twist squash is just as good as fruit creations and their version of a nobbly bobbly ice cream is ace.

Gilead · 19/07/2022 19:53

Another one for Aldi Fanta. Also prefer their version of penguin bars.

QuebecBagnet · 19/07/2022 19:58

Lidl weetabix is the same as the branded stuff

RedRec · 19/07/2022 20:20

Couldn't get Yorkshire teabags one day so got Lidl's Knightsbridge Gold. They are better.

hugoagogo · 19/07/2022 20:26

Sainsbury ketchup here too, never buy anything else now.

Bossyboo · 19/07/2022 23:42

Ooh got another Aldi one! The malt wheats are just as good as Shreddies and I think they're 69p a box where as Shreddies are around £3! Also as other people have suggested co op mayo tomato ketchup are really good quality at a much reduced cost Smile

LucieLemon · 19/07/2022 23:47

Aldi Jaffa cakes are my fave, I'd take them over McVities any day!

HeidiWhole · 20/07/2022 00:03

TwoMonthsOff · 19/07/2022 18:46

@HeidiWhole
I have stopped buying the Jaffa cakes as I would eat a whole tray in one go, they are insanely good.

Well obviously I have never done that Grin noooo

PickAChew · 20/07/2022 00:06

M&S and waitrose essentials are both excellent. Often have less added crap than brands, too.

greywinds · 20/07/2022 18:52

Where do you reckon is best for fruit and veg items? I've bought lidl strawberries, they were ok but wondering if anyone had views?

Mydogatemypurse · 20/07/2022 19:03

Lidl cornettos are soooo nice and ridiculously cheap. Aldis norpak... basically lurpak. Aldis jams... the posher ones are sooo nice too.

TwoMonthsOff · 20/07/2022 19:37

Greek Week in Lidl starts tomorrow btw for those of us NOT going to Greece this year 🇬🇷🇬🇷🇬🇷😢
the canned Kalamata olives are wonderful, in olive oil and red wine vinegar
Love Greek Week so many unusual delights
