Where is your tongue when your mouth is closed.

Lately I've been getting really tense around my jaw area I'm trying to relax the muscles and massage the area etc. And I have noticed that my tongue is rammed tight to the top of my mouth.

I know it's a stupid thing to think about but is that where it should be or a bit relaxed and sort of in the middle.

Where is your tongue??!

Top of my mouth, think that's the norm?

Titsywoo · 05/07/2022 22:45

Roof of mouth

Hugasauras · 05/07/2022 22:45

Resting against roof of mouth behind my top teeth.

Well this has given me a laugh thank you. Mine is sitting in the top of my mouth and I find it harder to breathe if it's elsewhere so I guess that's where it's meant to be?

Terfydactyl · 05/07/2022 22:46

I have never thought about this before but now you ask,
Its pushed to the roof of my mouth, fairly gently.
Or maybe that's because I'm overthinking it?

minipie · 05/07/2022 22:46

If my teeth are together (closed bite) then my tongue is against roof of mouth

If my teeth are apart my tongue is more relaxed and sitting in my lower palate

Maybe you are clenching or grinding your teeth a lot?

ClaireandTed · 05/07/2022 22:46

Google 'exercises for tmj', they will help.

NancyDrooo · 05/07/2022 22:47

Just kind of hovering, not touching the roof / teeth / anything else!

Dreamwhisper · 05/07/2022 22:47

Actually this is a thing - apparently the correct position for your tongue is to be relaxed and gently resting against the roof of your mouth.

saraclara · 05/07/2022 22:49

The front of my tongue is behind my lower front teeth at the moment, with the rest of it resting along the roof of my mouth.

Ducksurprise · 05/07/2022 22:50

Ugh, now my tongue is feeling weird in my mouth.

I think it's normally resting behind my top teeth but it currently feels massive.

I grind my teeth whenever I cut stuff with a knife so probably not a good person to ask.

RightOnTheEdge · 05/07/2022 22:51

It's resting againt the back of my top two teeth.
I think anyway, its hard to be natural now. I've never thought about it before and now I can't stop thinking about my tongue 😜🤣

Atsearching · 05/07/2022 22:52

Okay so looks like my tongue is in the right place but mine is too clenched. It definitely doesn't feel like it's relaxed.

How can I get my tongue to chill out?!

Sort of the same although the tip is against my bottom teeth. I have tried closing my mouth properly and my tongue touches roof but tip still on bottom teeth and I can't breath 🙃 so floating it is.

I also spent far too much time thinking about this...

Oooh this type of question is what MN is for!!
Mine is resting on the roof of my mouth touching my front teeth.

saraclara · 05/07/2022 23:06

It's resting againt the back of my top two teeth.

Wha...? I just tried to do that and it's horrible! SO weird and uncomfortable!

Greenkitten · 05/07/2022 23:08

Can anyone relax their tongue? I feel odd now. I don’t think mine does! It just…is?! I’m not sure I can clench my tongue either. 👅

AdoraBell · 05/07/2022 23:10

Middle is kind of resting against the roof of my mouth, sides resting against upper teeth and tip resting on the back of the lower front teeth.

I’ve thought about it before and now it feels weird 🤣

Yep. That's my tongue's at rest position (a sentence I'd never thought I'd type!)

AdoraBell · 05/07/2022 23:11

Never thought about it before.

Tablechairtable · 05/07/2022 23:13

Mine isn't touching the roof of my mouth!! But it is behind my front teeth. Am I odd then? ! Got me thinking now! Maybe U shouldn't have read this thread!😆 🤣 😂

Ohhhhhh

Mine sits curled up in the bottom of my mouth. Always does.

Am worried now😂🤣

MrsEdnaWelthorpe · 05/07/2022 23:17

Well it seems my tongue is a bit unusual, it's against my lower teeth? Is this a sign of something awful, or am I just a freak of nature? Grin
