Where is your tongue when your mouth is closed.

Lately I've been getting really tense around my jaw area I'm trying to relax the muscles and massage the area etc. And I have noticed that my tongue is rammed tight to the top of my mouth.

I know it's a stupid thing to think about but is that where it should be or a bit relaxed and sort of in the middle.

Where is your tongue??!

Okay so looks like my tongue is in the right place but mine is too clenched. It definitely doesn't feel like it's relaxed.

How can I get my tongue to chill out?!

Buy it a drink? 🍷😁

YellowLemonshade · 05/07/2022 23:18

I'm creasing up at the thought of all the MNers currently focussing in where are tongues are in our mouths!

Now I'm thinking too much about my tongue and it feels weird.

Hardtofindafreename · 05/07/2022 23:23

This leads to the question which has puzzled me for years - is the roof of your mouth smooth or ridged? Mine is smooth, I always thought this was same for everyone and I said something about it one day and realized my dh has a ridged roof of mouth. So, smooth or ridged ?

Great questions of the world solved on MN 😂

Noonado · 05/07/2022 23:27

Mine presses against the back of my top front teeth, which is apparently WRONG and very bad, according to the internet. I don’t really know what to do about it though. Who has time to consciously be worrying about their tongue position in the course of a normal day?

Me too, I’d rather have not been aware of it’s natural placement - it feels uncomfortable now.

jd88123 · 05/07/2022 23:28

After doing meditation so many times at night time when I can't sleep my tongue has retrained to sit on the bottom of my mouth. Apparently its most relaxed there.

APJ1 · 05/07/2022 23:43

Mine is always resting against the back of my bottom teeth. It feels weird to have it against the roof of my mouth like most people are suggesting! Maybe that's to do with me having a narrow palate.

PinkButtercups · 05/07/2022 23:50

Roof of my mouth when completely shut but I sit with my mouth slightly open a tiny bit so most of the time it sits at the bottom resting in my lower teeth. I do have a 'lizard' tongue as people put it so maybe that's why 🤣

Why did I click on this post?!!!!

I should now write a new post:
‘How do I get to sleep when all I can think about is where my tongue rests in my mouth?’

Aswad · 06/07/2022 00:20

Aaaah FFS now I’m going to be thinking about this all day and night 😂

NeedToLeaveNow · 06/07/2022 00:24

You may need a gum shield

Look up TMJ

Bellyups · 06/07/2022 00:26

Behind my top front teeth

EBearhug · 06/07/2022 00:35

Years back, when I was seeing a therapist, she asked about my resting tongue position, because it cam indicate whether you're stressed or not. I thought that touching the roof of your mouth indicated stress, but it was over 20 years ago, so I might be misremembering.

RobertSmithsLipstick · 06/07/2022 00:41

Mine is kind of like a concertina in my mouth!
Rolled up and wiggling about a bit.

PokerFace123 · 06/07/2022 00:57

Why do I find this thread so hilarious 😂😂😂😭
My mouth is always very slightly open when I'm fully relaxed and the tip of my tongue touches my bottom teeth🤣🤣
When mouth closed it's touching the roof of my mouth!

MsOllie · 06/07/2022 01:05

If you're trying to relax then I remember being told don't let it touch the roof of your mouth or the sides or bottom, just try and hold it sort of floating Grin
It weirdly helps if you can't sleep too

In my pocket

JumanjiReturns · 06/07/2022 01:34

I asked my dentist this the last time I visited. It should be completely relaxed sitting on the floor of the mouth. Anywhere else and it indicates stress.

Ah, dang. Lots of stressed mnetters I guess.

Newcastlegirl · 06/07/2022 09:06

I do this too.

I have to consciously relax too. Relax your jaw as opposed to your tongue. It’s your jaw being tense that’s causing you to push your tongue to the top of your mouth. I do the same.

Another way to do it is to put your tongue to the bottom of your mouth and, again, relax your jaw and cheeks.

IncompleteSenten · 06/07/2022 09:06

After reading this I e realised I'm clearly doing it wrong 😁 because mines floppy at the bottom, resting against my bottom teeth. It fills the space, with teeth edging 3 sides and my throat the forth.

Atsearching · 06/07/2022 14:06

Just seen the additional messages. So relaxed at the bottom is the correct way not top!

If you move your tongue to the bottom you can instantly feel relaxation of your jaw and surrounding!

Touching behind my bottom teeth, but I've got a big overbite so it wouldn't touch my top teeth without me stretching it.
