Pineapple hot dog cabbage

Does anyone remember those pineapple cheese hot dog things that were a staple in 80's maybe even 90's parties?

It was a cabbage or similar wrapped in foil with cocktail sticks in? Like a pin head off that horror film but nice.

In my opinion it was a tinned hot dog, a picked onion and a piece of cheese.

My DH has said it was a cocktail sausage, a bit of pineapple and a pice of cheese.

What are your memories of this please?

The rich people used cocktail sausages. Everyone else used hot dogs

WeAreTheHeroes · 05/07/2022 22:19

Just cheese and pineapple on cocktail sticks stuck into a large potato.

Bookwest · 05/07/2022 22:20

It was a large potato covered in foil to disguise it, then covered in cocktail sticks, each with a chunk of both pineapple and cheese. Yum

Cheese and pineapple hedgehog we called it. No sausages as far as I remember

Atomicspider · 05/07/2022 22:22

Cheese and pineapple on sticks
or hot dogs on sticks. Pickled onions didn’t feature in our house (didn’t every 70s mother know someone’s cousins sisters uncle who choked to death on a pickled onion?!)

LilacPoppy · 05/07/2022 22:22

Just cheese and pineapple, no hot dogs that’s bizarre.

SugarMiceInTheRain · 05/07/2022 22:23

Cheese and pineapple on stick, stuck in half a grapefruit usually. Or sometimes cheese and a pickled onion.
Some parties would have cocktail sausages stuck in the grapefruit instead.

LittleRainbowCupcake · 05/07/2022 22:23

We had cheese, pineapple, a cocktail sausage and a pickle on ours.

Crinkle77 · 05/07/2022 22:24

We had cocktail sausages on sticks by themselves and cheese and pineapple or cheese and pickled onion. No buffet is complete without them in my opinion.

NewBootsAndRanty · 05/07/2022 22:25

Sausages on sticks!
Never heard of a cabbage being involved before though - we used a big potato or a grapefruit.

SpinningForTheWorld · 05/07/2022 22:26

Ours weren’t covered with foil, they were upturned half-melons. On the cocktail sticks were cheese, pineapple, and cocktail onions.

I don’t recall any cabbage or meat being involved.

The melon was used later on or the next day.

GrowThroughWhatYouGoThrough · 05/07/2022 22:26

A large potato covered in foil and it was cheese pickled onion and cocktail sausage on a stick in our house or cheese and pineapple

supersonicginandtonic · 05/07/2022 22:27

We had cheese and pineapple or cheese and pickled onion and the hot dogs were on their own seperate sticks

NannyR · 05/07/2022 22:28

My mum used to do these for our birthday parties, she did an orange wrapped in foul with cheese, tinned pineapple chunks and little sausages that came in a tin. I've not seen those sausages for ages - they tasted like hot dogs but were only about 1.5 inches long.

LoudingVoice · 05/07/2022 22:31

Cheese & pineapple or cheese & silver skin pickled onions, no sausages here!!

I really want to do this next time we have a buffet now 😁

NoWeaponsOnTheTable · 05/07/2022 22:31

We never had the foil covered whatever.
It's cheese, pineapple, pickled onion.
Or cheese, cocktail sausage, pickled onion.
On a plate.
I still make these for picky dinners or a posh supper.

Nugg · 05/07/2022 22:32

Silverskin onion pineapple and cheese!

Hot dogs were a separate one

Tablechairtable · 05/07/2022 22:48

Cocktail sticks with either cocktail sausages OR pineapple and cheese. No foil covered potato mimicking potatoes here though 😋

ChagSameachDoreen · 05/07/2022 22:58

My mum used to do a half melon for the base.

Cheese cube, pineapple chunk, and sometimes a mini hotdog.

limitededitionbarbie · 05/07/2022 23:02

Oh wow so many variations!

Ours was always a cabbage wrapped in foil (but it could have been anything) with a hot dog bit, a picked onion, always a silver skin and a piece of cheese. Always

I made this for an 80's party and my best mate was like "yep is right not seen one of these for ages" where as my husband who is welsh was like "what the actual fuck is that"

Nice to see different variations of it Bear

I agree. I've always done it as a nod to my childhood and it's always been devoured with no pins left!

We had cocktail sausages on sticks and cheese and pineapple or cheese and a silverskin onion. Not all mixed up.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 05/07/2022 23:09

Hotdogs, cheese, pineapple and pickled silver skins in various trios, stuck into half an orange.
