Pineapple hot dog cabbage

limitededitionbarbie · 05/07/2022 22:18

Does anyone remember those pineapple cheese hot dog things that were a staple in 80's maybe even 90's parties?

It was a cabbage or similar wrapped in foil with cocktail sticks in? Like a pin head off that horror film but nice.

In my opinion it was a tinned hot dog, a picked onion and a piece of cheese.

My DH has said it was a cocktail sausage, a bit of pineapple and a pice of cheese.

What are your memories of this please?

As above, either cheese and pineapple or cheese and onion, sausage separately, on half grapefruit.
Also mandatory was a big trifle

limitededitionbarbie · 05/07/2022 23:12

It was literally a cocktail stick with a bit of hot dog, a silver skin onion and a bit of pineapple.

We also had bacon ribs. I'm not sure if this is a thing outside of Liverpool or even the northwest but the bacon ribs is literally the best part of a buffet here.

Is this a northwest thing or a scouse thing?

Anyone else - have you ever and do you ever expect to see bacon ribs at a party?

If not, what are your regional things?

Half a grapefruit wrapped in foil and topped with either cheese and pineapple or mini hot dog sausages from a tin. My mum put 2 glacé cherry halves for eyes at the front. I wouldn't have known what a melon was in the 1970s! We only had silverskin pickled onions at Christmas and they never came on a stick😂

Cheese & pineapple hedgehogs here. Fondly adopted by my now adult daughter as a retro must have for a buffet. It sits next to its close relatives, the cheese & silverskin onion porcupine & the cocktail sausage echidna.

TooManyPJs · 05/07/2022 23:29

What's this potato and cabbage nonsense.

It was cheese and pineapple on cocktail sticks stuck in half an ORANGE!!

No one did it with sausages or hot dogs, although we did have cocktail sausages on cocktail sticks on a plate (and no we weren't rich lol!).

GrootUnforgiven · 06/07/2022 01:17

Ours were the same as yours OP, can't remember what they got stuck in though. Also had a home made trifle on the table somewhere. Or jelly and tinned fruit, my Mym had a hippo mould I loved. My grandma used to ritz crackers with a jar of some kind of meat pate stuff spread on them. Sounds gross but a lot of people did that then. And fairy cakes. Plate of biscuits, the pink wafer things and party rings.

The mention of oranges reminded me of christingles, same thing but with sweets on the cocktail sticks. Do the kids still make those? I haven't seen one in years.

ShinyPikachu · 06/07/2022 02:06

I can't remember what my mum stuck them into (grapefruit sounds likely for the size though) and you got the choice of either cheese and a pickled onion together or pineapple and cubed ham from a tin.

ShinyPikachu · 06/07/2022 02:08

The ritz crackers thing just reminded me that my mum would also get mini cheddars and a tube of Primula cheese and squirt a little bit on the mini cheddars so they looked like a cheesy version of iced gems. The height of sophistication at the time. Grin

SantanaBinLorry · 06/07/2022 02:51

Aaaallways bacon ribs at a party for us OP... And a pan of lentil soup. L'pool/N'west 😁
The 'aunties' also make a hideous Tracy Island looking Sea Food Platter - gets much criticism and laughter. But there's never any left!

BettyBootsie · 06/07/2022 07:22

It was definitely half a cabbage wrapped in foil in our house but there were no hot dogs or cocktail sausages - it was cubes of tinned ham!! Usually a selection of cocktail sticks with ham, cubed cheese and maybe pickled onion - I'm also thinking cherry but that seems wrong/strange

userxx · 06/07/2022 07:24

Hot dogs!! Nope, never had that combo.

This is my child's favourite lunch!

Pinkflipflop85 · 06/07/2022 07:28

I miss vol-au-vents at buffets. They were always my favourite!

SpinningForTheWorld · 06/07/2022 07:32

If anyone wants the mini hotdogs, I’ve definitely seen jars of them in Asda next to regular jars of American style ones. Although they probably cost £90 these days not 90p.

I know! I can’t find frozen vol-au-vent cases anywhere these days.

myuterusistryingtokillme · 06/07/2022 07:35

At all the parties I went to they would be covered in
A) cheese/pineapple
B) cheese/mini pickled onion
C) just a cocktail sausage

BertieBotts · 06/07/2022 07:37

What I remember is cubes of cheese and pineapple on sticks, I want to say they were stuck into half a pineapple?? But thinking about it that would be really wasteful. Maybe they tricked me by making the top of the pineapple stick out of the foil-wrapped potato.

Cocktail sausages, with or without their own cocktail sticks loose in a tray. Pickled onions with cocktail sticks on the side to grab them.

Never hot dogs. I must have been more middle class than I realised XD

PlopPlop · 06/07/2022 07:38

Every extremely working class family party I attended in the 90s (from weddings to funerals) had a potato wrapped in foil with either:

tinned cheese and pineapple on a stick
cocktail sausage and a picked onion on a stick

The sandwiches where either ham, cheese, potted meat or dripping

I miss a 90s buffet!

PlopPlop · 06/07/2022 07:40

The cheese wasn’t tinned only the pineapple, I am very sleep deprived this morning…

BertieBotts · 06/07/2022 07:40

I'm intolerant to something in cheese so I always remember feeling a bit wistful about the pineapple as I wanted it but was scared to eat things that had been so close to cheese (these days I am a bit more relaxed as a tiny bit doesn't affect me).

EntertainingandFactual · 06/07/2022 07:43

We had cocktail sticks with the following combinations:

Cheese and pineapple
Cheese and pickled onion
Cocktail sausage in its own
Cocktail sausage with pickled onion
Cheese and grape

OldTinHat · 06/07/2022 08:05

Pineapple and cheese hedgehog!!

But it was a cabbage under the foil? Who knew...!

PMSL, memory unlocked 😂

sunniest · 06/07/2022 08:15

It was called a pineapple and cheese hedgehog and was stuck in an orange with cherry eyes in the Ladybird Cooking with Mother book. A staple at birthday parties when I was little, iconic!
