I'm after some great new book recommendations as I feel a bit stuck in a book rut - what's your ONE favourite book of all time?

OP posts:
Hiheidi · 04/07/2022 18:34

Pride & Prejudice, Rebecca and The Time Traveller's Wife.

Crazyhousewife · 04/07/2022 18:37

The rescue Nicholas sparks and two by two also Nicholas sparks

chiffchaffchiff · 04/07/2022 18:41

I have two very different favourite books. Both authors have a catalogue of impressive books but both were my first reads from them.

The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay

The Assassin's apprentice by Robin Hobb

A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry.

DramaAlpaca · 04/07/2022 18:43

Katherine by Anya Seton.

DottyLittleRainbow · 04/07/2022 18:44

Jane Eyre. I could just read it over and over.

Ridingthegravytrain · 04/07/2022 18:48

@AppleHa if you haven't been the manor at hemingford grey, where Lucy Boston lived when she wrote the books and where they were based is well worth a visit. Tours are run by her daughter in law Diana and my children (and I) were enchanted. Tolly's room is exactly how it is in the book!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 04/07/2022 18:51

Rebecca
The Poisonwood Bible

catscatscurrantscurrants · 04/07/2022 18:56

There are too many that I love to choose just one. But at the top of the pile would be Jane Eyre, The Lord of the Rings and Cranford.

PoseyFlump · 04/07/2022 19:00

Angela's ashes is non fiction and I always mainly read non fiction until this book inspired me to read fiction. And I'm so glad it did! I was missing out on so many classics.

Pleaseletmeconfirm · 04/07/2022 19:02

Impossible question. I've read the thread saying oh yes that's my favourite book ever to quite a few books mentioned

A fine balance by Robinson mistry is AMAZING
Illiwacker Peter Carey ( spelling)
Aunt Julia and the Script Writer Mario Vargas Llosa
The Lord of the Rings
Nansens Furthest North

There are loads of other that are ALL my favourite book when I'm thinking about them 😅😅

quirkychick · 04/07/2022 19:02

A lot of my favourites are already on here and a few I'll note for future reference too.

Dune by Frank Herbert (which I have read many times) and the sequels, which are also good but not quite so brilliant.
Foucault's Pendulum by Umberto Eco
More recent books:
The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller, I sobbed at the end, so sad. Circe by her is also excellent
Piranesi by Susanna Clarke

First published 1931 - I'm an oldie and thought it might not appeal to everyonebut it was rated favourite read (or similar) recently on Persephone - I'm sure it's available more cheaply second hand online.
Journeys End which is mentioned in the blurb, I found an audio version of , possibly BBC radio play. Worth a listen (WW1) if you can find it.
