I'm after some great new book recommendations as I feel a bit stuck in a book rut - what's your ONE favourite book of all time?

Anne if green gables

Omg I loved that book but I have to say I thought the Canadian Tv series was just as good.
This brings back happy memories.

The Stand by Stephen King. Although it pains me to say it recently. Still a fantastic book of epic proportions.
Can't forget Jane Eyre, Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility and The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty by A.N Roquelaure.

Jane Eyre

Angela's Ashes. I read it at least once or twice a year. Love that book.

Second is Wuthering Heights, very dark but intriguing.

A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett. A child's book but one I return to again and again, so beautifully written. (And the films changed the ending and spoilt it)

@Covidagainandagain I've never seen The Grand Sophy mentioned on here before! I recall reading that as a child in my grandmother's house, and loving it. I shall look for it in the library.

Its my favourite Georgette Heyer, I've re read it so many times both as a child and an adult.

I don't know if you have read any of her others, but if you haven't then I can also highly recommend, all of them, but especially

Bath Tangle
Frederica
Lady of quality
The reluctant widow

And A Gentleman in Moscow - Amor Towles.

Me too! I was lucky enough to stay at the Metropol in recent years and it only added to my delight reading it!

I am looking forward to savouring it all over again soon.

My Friend Flicka. I read it so many times as a child. I re-read it a couple of years ago. It was deep, sensitive and told it’s story beautifully - I came away half fascinated how I stayed engaged with it as such a young child (pages of descriptive text - beautiful to read but not typical of a child’s book).

the unbearable lightness of being

the grapes of wrath

Persuasion, Jane Austen
A Place of Greater Safety, Hilary Mantel
Music and Silence, Rose Tremaine

Pleaseletmeconfirm · 06/07/2022 23:01

All the three main books by Rohintin Mistry are incredible books - Such a long Journey, A fine Balance and Family Matters.

I always wander why he hasn't written more similar books. I like his short stories too but not as much

Lincoln In The Bardo by George Saunders. One of the few books I could read again and again. Though a few in my book group really disliked it!

SadieBaneso · 06/07/2022 23:17

Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman

thebabessavedme · 06/07/2022 23:20

Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurty. It is a western adventure with cowboys, navtive americans, whores, misfits, violence, love, tragedy, money, etc. Just a fantastic read. Won a pulitizer prize many years ago.

Queenoftheflumps02 · 06/07/2022 23:37

Who is the author please? I'm struggling to find this book.

HuntingoftheSnark · 07/07/2022 08:14

@Covidagainandagain thank you - I have added these to my list!

Ridingthegravytrain · 07/07/2022 11:44

@thebabessavedme I love lonesome dove. Have you read the others in series?

Another great cowboy book is monte Walsh by Jack Schaefer

GrumpyMummy123 · 07/07/2022 19:56

I'm afraid I can't pick one. It all depends on mood and situation. But I have narrowed it down to two

  • Pride & Prejudice for my go to always brilliant, read it a hundred times it's got wrinkly from being dropped in the bath several times book
  • My family and other animals - while on holiday in Corfu, read while on a gorgeous deserted beach.

Catch-22. Read aged 15. My brother had a copy lying around and I picked it up - no idea why, wasn't the sort of thing I read AT ALL.

It was like windows opening in my mind. I'd never read anything like it, the way it went from funny as hell to savage to poignant and back again. The horror and sadness butting right up against the absurdity. Incredible.

I love Catch 22 as well.

The World According to Garp John Irving. I love the film too.

3 by Irish writers
Milkman by Anna Burns
The Seige of Krishnapur by J G Farrell
Ulysses by James Joyce

My favourite book ever is Fragrant Harbour by John Lanchester. I’ve just started an Instagram page called The Bookish Base to share book recommendations (just for fun). Love hearing other people’s recommendations :)
