I'm after some great new book recommendations as I feel a bit stuck in a book rut - what's your ONE favourite book of all time?

I'm not actually sure what my favourite book is, but one I have re-read a few times is Valley of the Dolls by Jacqueline Susann.

Rereading this for the umpteenth time right now.

Me too

Another fave is Flowers in the Attic. For me it’s often not the best written book that captures you but the era in which you read it.

My favourite book is Pride and Prejudice. Its much harder to pick my second favourite, but it would probably be The Handmaid's Tale.

Catch-22. Read aged 15. My brother had a copy lying around and I picked it up - no idea why, wasn't the sort of thing I read AT ALL.

It was like windows opening in my mind. I'd never read anything like it, the way it went from funny as hell to savage to poignant and back again. The horror and sadness butting right up against the absurdity. Incredible.

Fluffygreenslippers · 06/07/2022 00:11

I capture the castle by Dodie Smith is my favourite book of all time.

The others in my top five are;

The night watch Sarah Walters
Bombs on Aunt Dainty Judith Kerr
Down & Out in Paris & London George Orwell
For love of a horse Patricia Leitch (bit of a childhood favourite that I still love as an adult).

RubyandPearl · 06/07/2022 00:17

Behind the Scenes at the Museum by Kate Atkinson without a doubt. Absolutely beautifully written and funny and heartbreaking at the same time. I've lost count of the number of times I've read it.

avamiah · 06/07/2022 00:19

Another of my favourite books is the Lovely Bones so much better than the film .

SingingSands · 06/07/2022 00:21

The Waterway Girls by Milly Adams, all 3 of the series are lovely books, I must read them about 5 or 6 times a year.
The East End Angels by Rosie Hendry, I love these books & read them over & over again
The Shipyard Girls by Nancy Revill, 12 books that I can't put down.
The Chalet School by Elinor M Brent Dyer, I have read all 62 of the books from getting my first one age 8, all the fill ins & the other linked series.
