Help me steer conversation at an event we have on Sunday. It’s a similar group of people at each activity and post activity a few of us have drinks. Topics as follows and it just gets me all wound up :

  • 11+ grammar or private (the politics/the fees/the oh no I couldn’t possibly go private it’s against my ethics but happy to go grammar)
  • extension/house extensions
  • buying a new property and house prices
  • general holidays - going skiing, US etc etc lapland - you name it!
Help me steer this week’s gathering!!

What do you talk about with friends?

My hope is to have a laugh tbh - just joke about funny things

not schools/house prices etc etc.

as a group we have some history so I was thinking about reminiscing about stuff we’ve done before. I don’t know I just want to steer away from schools and houses

Mostly stupid stuff
My fringe

mackthepony · 24/06/2022 15:09

BiFoldChampion · 24/06/2022 15:11

Whether the universe is infinite or not
Which religion (if any) is right
Whether the differences in average IQ by country reflect any innate racial differences in intelligence
Should the vote be restricted to people who own property
Where will we go along once the alps are too warm for reliable conditions

My friends are all in their 50s so topics are: menopause, what if they weren't married (this can get quite intense), what their kids are doing (first year uni/gap/vocational).
Two of us have recently moved and one is in the property business so that topic comes up at some point.

BiFoldChampion · 24/06/2022 15:15

I think they’re already in the let’s go to Scotland or Canada to Ski! Eastern Europe is often considered too. And most people buy their ski wear from Aldi or TK Maxx - soz done that one

So you want everyone to not talk about what they want talk about, only what you want to talk about, only you don’t know what that is.
maybe don’t bother going and let everyone else have a good time

LetitiaLeghorn · 24/06/2022 15:17

I have the same conversations with people without knowing anything about their class. Why are you defining people's class and then writing lists of chosen topics? TBH, I didn't know I couldn't talk about selling my house or going on holiday with working class people? Do they have to stay in their house which they never move from or something?

hopeishere · 24/06/2022 15:19

Films
What we've watched on tv
Books
Cost of living

Iwouldratherpullmyteethoutonebyone · 24/06/2022 15:20

This is almost as sad and depressing as the video of the family fighting at a woman's 50th birthday party in the DM the other day!

newnamethanks · 24/06/2022 15:23

Femme Natal innate racial differences in intelligence. Where on earth do you meet for such intellectual pursuits? The Kehlsteinhaus? Please explain. And never invite me round for a drink.

ExtremelyDedicated · 24/06/2022 15:24

50s, fairly MC friends and colleagues.

Things we’ve seen on TV
Food and drink
Elderly parents
Teens and young adult DCs
Places we’ve been, friends we haven’t seen for a while
Whatever is in the news (recently partygate, Rwanda, Ukraine)
Personal stuff (SENs, medical stuff, menopause, cost of living)
House moving and renovation
Holidays

Yes holidays and moving house - but school fees/grammar schools? I imagine most w/c people don’t send their kids to private school?

I am an immigrant so I am using mumsnet definitions here

Did you never debate at school or university? Do you actually understand that people will discuss propositions that they believe are false, and enjoy showing while they are?

And no, I won’t be inviting you around unless you work catering private parties and we need some extra staff to hand out the drinks.

Astrabees · 24/06/2022 15:29

I don't know, but I have reached the age where grandchildren are the main topic of conversation and it is so boring. I'm always happy to hear about how my friends children are and what they have been up to as I know them. Hearing about a bunch of 4 year olds I've never met is very tedious.

Playplayaway · 24/06/2022 15:29

Traffic.
Weather.
Our cats 😻
What the kids are up to.
Cost of living crisis.
Lidl/Aldi bargains (mainly alcohol).
What we're watching on TV.
Celeb crushes.
DIY that we've got going on.
Whoever is annoying us - neighbours etc.
Occasionally holidays, but not in depth.
Work stuff, just lighthearted stuff.

After a few drinks it generally turns to politics but I keep out of that.

Confused

Use this thread and the different answers as the centre point for all your conversations and debate between you. This might help you find clarity and be less confused.

LetitiaLeghorn · 24/06/2022 15:32

Of course working class children go to grammar schools, in England at least. And have WC have house extensions. You're conflating money and class.

OompaLoompaa · 24/06/2022 15:33
