Help me steer conversation at an event we have on Sunday. It’s a similar group of people at each activity and post activity a few of us have drinks. Topics as follows and it just gets me all wound up :

  • 11+ grammar or private (the politics/the fees/the oh no I couldn’t possibly go private it’s against my ethics but happy to go grammar)
  • extension/house extensions
  • buying a new property and house prices
  • general holidays - going skiing, US etc etc lapland - you name it!
Help me steer this week’s gathering!!

What do you talk about with friends?

OP posts:
LadyMonicaBaddingham · 24/06/2022 20:12

"What was your favourite TV programme as a child?" is my absolute favourite conversation starter...

FourChimneys · 24/06/2022 21:22

How all the adult DC are doing.
Progress reports on DIY projects, usually hilarious.
Recent and forthcoming holidays.
Our gardens, and allotments where applicable.
Current affairs.

Whether life would be better if fairies, mermaids, elves and hobbits existed.

Whether you're likely to outlive your current sofa or whether you may fit another one in age dependent.

Whether that figure you saw creeping towards you while dreaming was a dream or a ghost, and wouldn't life be far more interesting if ghosts were real.

Is it ethical to go on a holiday to Antarctica.

This.

If people chatted about more stuff like this then I would go out more. But most people’s chat is so fucking dull, mine included.

I am lucky enough to have a few high functioning autistic spectrum friends who always have topics on their minds they need to discuss. Recently a friend came over and gave me an hour talk on the Battle of the Bulge. I loved it.

ShirleyJackson · 24/06/2022 21:34

What books we’ve read lately.
Daft things our dogs have done.
Guess who’s dead/pregnant/getting divorced/married.

RosesAndHellebores · 24/06/2022 21:37

We talk about:
Grown up DC
Opera
France/Macron
UK/Boris
Hydrangea Scale
The cats
The dogs
Cloth moths
Redevelopment of a local town centre
How long the head of our dc's old school has left
Holidays
What other mates are up to
The new vicar
Hard and soft landscapers

@Kris02

"I don’t divide people into classes. I divide them into intelligent and stupid, interesting and boring, charming and vulgar, well-mannered and rude, etc."

Brilliant !!!

What do you talk about with friends?

It sounds like conversations in my child's schools playground. Second homes overseas included, and what a pain it was they couldn't go to cut the lawns during covid!

Minimalme · 24/06/2022 22:30

I think it is the group factor. I meet up with friends one to one and the conversation is fast-paced and brilliant.

When I meet those same friends in a group, we always slip into holiday talk which is a big passion for them.

I do struggle with the group meet ups because my friends have all earn't good money and love holidays. I am poor and anxious, not a great travel combination Grin

Mellowyellow222 · 24/06/2022 22:35

I talk to my friends about what is going on in their lives, how their kids are, how our parents drive us bonkers.

I am extending my house so we talk about that. We also talk about Tv shows, work, mutual friends.

if your friends want to talk about certain things let them.

lightisnotwhite · 24/06/2022 22:36

Astrabees · 24/06/2022 15:29

I don't know, but I have reached the age where grandchildren are the main topic of conversation and it is so boring. I'm always happy to hear about how my friends children are and what they have been up to as I know them. Hearing about a bunch of 4 year olds I've never met is very tedious.

Yep and then they get phones out to show you how adorable they are. Yep I know four years olds like to dance to buskers. Yours is the third one I’ve seen this week.

ghhnv6 · 25/06/2022 00:30

Those sound like incredibly boring topics or rather its a boring way of talking about them. I dont think its about topics but attitude, holidays are great to talk about, assuming they actually say something about them beyond we stayed in a villa. same about schools, clearly an important topic but you need a way of talking about it beyond just reiterating that you are tutoring. Not sure whether our chat is any more exciting but today I discussed what makes up/defines a paragraph and how it's different depending on which language you use. Different educational systems, particularly when it comes to kids starting school. Ukrainian refugees and their route here and how they manage to make sense of the UK but also managing their lives when they dont know how long they will be here. Different type of e-bikes......these are just some of the convos from today . As I said not sure it's all that exciting

Henerlo · 25/06/2022 00:40

Revolution.

That's the only conversation to have about the middle class.

doesthatmakesense · 25/06/2022 00:48

Health inequality is quite the middle-class buzzkill and usually shuts people up when they get all house-prices/school fees/entitled.

LoisWilkersonslastnerve · 25/06/2022 01:04

Not sure why you've brought class into it. Working and upper class people drone on about house prices, extensions etc too. The middle classes are not in some boring bubble of their own. It's an age thing

mooneagle · 25/06/2022 01:09

Just listen don’t talk. Water off a ducks backside.

Namechanger355 · 25/06/2022 01:33

FemmeNatal · 24/06/2022 15:13

Whether the universe is infinite or not
Which religion (if any) is right
Whether the differences in average IQ by country reflect any innate racial differences in intelligence
Should the vote be restricted to people who own property
Where will we go along once the alps are too warm for reliable conditions

Sorry are you kidding regarding racial differences in intelligence

the thread is about middle class Chat - not far right racist bullsh*t thoughts

lightisnotwhite · 25/06/2022 06:32

Interesting than everyone has assumed racial differences mean white against black. The top six countries for intelligence aren’t European or Caucasian.

😂😂😂

Tillsforthrills · 25/06/2022 07:33

@FemmeNatal

Are there people out there that would debate whether the only people that should be able to vote are homeowners? I mean, debate in favour of only homeowners voting?

Certainly a theme with your suggestions here…

TrentonFulch · 25/06/2022 07:46

Would you rather have an arm for a leg, or a leg for an arm?

Have you heard this one cool trick that doctors don't want you to know about losing weight?

Do you accept all cookies or go through the list and decline them?

Would you rather fight: one t-rex-sized chicken, or 10 chicken-sized t-rex?

Should Australia be in Eurovision?

Who remembers when this was all fields?

Vampirethriller · 25/06/2022 08:40

In a zombie apocalypse, would you rather fast or slow moving zombies?

What's your favourite dinosaur?

When you eat Jaffa cakes do you do "Full moon/half moon/total eclipse" or do you just eat them normally like a weirdo?

Would you rather a Jack Russell sized Doberman or a Doberman sized Jack Russell?

FridayiminlovewithRobertSmith · 25/06/2022 08:41

I thought I’d find a dull party of wannabe’s the worst thing I’d find on this thread, but yep any time at all with a bunch of eugenists 🤮ever easily takes that crown

FridayiminlovewithRobertSmith · 25/06/2022 08:50

lightisnotwhite · 25/06/2022 06:32

“We’re not white suprematists we’re merely eugenists”

Still don’t want to come to your party.

I’m hanging out with the chicken/TRex fighters and people who measuring their life in sofas. We might talk about schools, or politics, or what to watch next in Netflix, or holidays but someone will always draw us back to the important stuff like how we eat our biscuits.

TrentonFulch · 25/06/2022 09:12

Have you ever met anyone who's paid full price at DFS?

Who let the dogs out?

Moomoo75 · 25/06/2022 09:27

Octomore · 24/06/2022 15:42

God this is depressing. Thank fuck the only people I socialise with are my actual friends, so there is no need to try to "steer the conversation" to subjects worthy of our status in the class hierarchy.

I mix with both WC and MC folk, and we talk about current affairs, world events, hobbies, holidays/days out, health, what our mutual acquaintances are up to, books we've read, films we've seen, even
work (occasionally)... Why don't you just try doing that?

I agree 100% Octomore.
It is ridiculous that people still go around with this mentality. Putting themselves and others in boxes with labels. Middle class conversation pieces!! I have heard it all.
Really OP your post should be about what topics you can steer the conversation around with the PEOPLE you will be mixing with at an upcoming event.

Surely if they are your friends the chat should be free flowing about the world and about what is going on in your lives. With lots of humour thrown in.
