Help me steer conversation at an event we have on Sunday. It’s a similar group of people at each activity and post activity a few of us have drinks. Topics as follows and it just gets me all wound up :

  • 11+ grammar or private (the politics/the fees/the oh no I couldn’t possibly go private it’s against my ethics but happy to go grammar)
  • extension/house extensions
  • buying a new property and house prices
  • general holidays - going skiing, US etc etc lapland - you name it!
Help me steer this week’s gathering!!

What do you talk about with friends?

Are there more legs or eyes in the world?

Everyone can get involved and no one's feelings get hurt.

check first that all the group does have both legs and two eyes.

It never stops. Never. This weird obsession with the middle classes. What is up with you people? How do you have the time, the energy, the fathomless depths of resentment for this, day on, day out?

If you had to choose three vegetables and two fruits to bring to a desert island, what would they be?

if you could only eat one breakfast/lunch/dinner every day for the rest of your life, what would it be?

I don't identify as MC, I have friends who are cleaners, on disability benefits, doctors, professors, farmers, actual landed gentry and everything inbetween.
I like to talk about nature with anyone who will engage. Second topic would be military aircraft.
Third would be food.

I’ll update you tomorrow afternoon.

A great get together! I had to steer away from grammar school talk! But other than that:

politics (Boris but also historical politics)
music/music festivals
lots of music talk
book talk
food talk
history
hair/beauty
weather (obvs)
Work talk
kids new teachers

just loads - it all flowed beautifully!!

@BiFoldChampion that's good to hear, I'm glad you had an enjoyable get together. Are you opposed to discussions regarding grammar schools?

BiFoldChampion · 28/06/2022 19:27

@sunja it can just get a bit heated - in a sense some will knock private schools but don’t agree moving to an area with high house prices or funding too 11+ tutors for a top grammar is pretty much a type of ‘private’ education or is from a place of privilege. I had one friend say his parents being teachers gave him no advantage in life, that he did everything himself. On the other hand he bemoans not having 5 week trips to France with his kids like his parents did with him!
