Stay as close to the truth as possible - what's your real reason for wanting the day off? If it's purely skiving, frankly, I think you should go in, as taking sickies can be a slippery slope. If it's (e.g.) you have had a sleepless night due to anxiety but don't want to share this with work, say you have had a sleepless night due to feeling physically ill such as with stomach ache or a cough. If it's period pains, describe them as 'abdominal pains'.

My mum once phoned in sick for my brother when he was younger, panicked when asked what was wrong and said he had a broken leg. Don’t use thst one
