I'm looking for a sick day from work.

What's a good excuse/made up illness for a sickie?

Thanks

I’m glad you had a productive day at home OP.

How did the person who covered your work feel after their shift? Did they have a great day too?

Besides, if an organisation falls apart because there's one person off sick, then they need to look at staffing levels and how the business is run overall. No business should be that short-staffed that one person being absent causes it to collapse.

It doesn’t “collapse” on that one day ..mistakes are made, work is set back, other people are made unhappy having to cover, communication is disrupted. A million ways important places can’t work properly.

But again, that's not the fault of the person who has pulled a sickie.

People can be off at the last minute for all sorts of reasons - car accident, traffic jams, closed roads, rail strikes, sickness, child sickness, a death in the family and yes, occasionally because they fancy a duvet day.

If the odd absence results in mistakes being made, work being set back and a disruption in communication, then that's a general management/staffing issue which needs to be addressed.

No well-run organisation should struggle because the odd person decides they need a duvet day occasionally.

Op here. I have an underlying condition myself and I also suffer from migraines. Not as serious as the migraines mentioned here. There's has been many times when I had to keep on going no matter what and keep going to work too.

I just couldn't face work yesterday. I was probably going to be facing a 10 hour day which was much and the same as today and the rest of the week and that's before I get into Saturday and Sunday. Most workers usually get a day off or two at the end of a work week. I won't even get an over time payment.

I just couldn't face the work day yesterday with all that I have to do this week at home. I spent the whole day work at home - cutting grass, painting, cleaning gutters, vacuuming, laundry before going for a shower at night time and settling down with a drink.

I had a great day at home. I was so productive at home.

Good for you!

No need to justify yourself in the face of a workplace who overworks people and clearly doesn't give a shit about your MH or happiness anyway.

Doesn't solve the problem though does it Confused

Well, no, but it often takes a lot more than one person speaking up to change workplace policy.

Most workplaces don't give a shit about their staff and how hard they work - we're all easily replaced so I really can't get worked up about people who choose to pull the odd sickie 🤷🏻‍♀️

goingback · 21/06/2022 22:11

had a colleague send a message saying they were taking a sickie as we were due to be short-staffed that day and they would be busy shame they put it on the group chat
Don't do that one!

THEDEACON · 21/06/2022 22:18

The best excuse for taking a sickie is actually being ill !

Readyforpie · 21/06/2022 22:43

I'm not worked up by it... far from. But if the working conditions don't suit have a conversation or look for another job because the underlying issue will not go away otherwise

SunflowerGardens · 21/06/2022 22:44

covid?

everyone else uses it,

You're stuck in the house then in case someone spots you

Absolutely but neither of those things will happen overnight nor will they cure the immediate issue which is being rota'd on for 12 days straight with no respite 🤷🏻‍♀️

Readyforpie · 21/06/2022 23:03

Just refer to previous advice given .. 🤷‍♀️

Jalisco · 21/06/2022 23:20

I'm entitled to sick days and I am far too honest by never taking them.

Well judging by your update OP, you don't really know the meaning of honesty. But karma really is a bitch. You may have been "faking it" - lying / being dishonest - this time, but what goes around, comes around...

My work doesn't know that I was faking a sick day. Fuck them anyways. I had a great day off.

Good for you OP 👏 👏 👏

Considering her employer is acting illegally by Over working her, I think she’s owed a sick day.
this is what employers need to understand we work to live not live to work and our boss’s don’t own our lives. If they get stuck for staff then they need to employ more staff and stop being such skin flints.

Charming. Two wrongs don't make a right, especially when not being forced to work there. Morals and integrity would stop most people lying like this.

Literally is.

I’ve found that organisations that turn a blind eye to days off over sickness are often the worse run.

Organisations who make people work for 12 days straight are not organisations I'm going to stick up for in any way 🤣

If they don't want their staff to pull sickies maybe they should employ more people and start treating them with respect 🤷🏻‍♀️

Squirrelwithaflute · 22/06/2022 07:00

@RedCarsGoFaster 100% agree, please don't use migraine as a sickie excuse. I've suffered with severe migraines since I was 4 years old (botched eye ops) I'm now 38 and still suffering. I've been with my company nearly 20 years, they know I have a condition but I still feel like a shit when I genuinely can't go in. Although the last 2 years I've been on propranolol which is a beta blocker and it has lessened the frequency in which I get them. Maybe something worth discussing with your gp to my fellow sufferers 🙂

No, she isn't entitled to a sick day. She is entitled to a sick day when she is sick. If employers need to understand that they can't treat workers like this then workers need to get spines and organise. She is entitled to stand up for her rights, not to lie.

FindingMeno · 22/06/2022 07:44

Shits means you must take 24 hours.
Puking means 48.
Back has gone into spasm can be adjusted to suit requirements.

FindingMeno · 22/06/2022 07:46

I agree though - as a migraine sufferer, it's seen as a poor excuse as everyone trots that one out - so don't use that.

MN baffles me.
Last week a woman found money in her house and the whole thread was full of honesty is the best policy you can’t keep the money.
Today is advice on how to steal a day’s pay without getting caught.
Truly bizarre.

I so agree with you! Pulling a sickie when there is nothing wrong is no better than stealing from your employer. You want the day off, book holiday or lose a day's pay. No ifs, no buts.

Many many people won't get sick pay for the first three days. Taking a sickie isn't stealing.

I think MN posters are past experts at double standards. I wonder how many of those piling in to say it's ok to lie to your employer, s**t on your colleagues and pull a sickie are on threads bemoaning to audacity of those who are willing to fight for their pay and working conditions. The sheer cheek of people to inconvenience them by going on strike when they could all pull sickies instead.

thecatsthecats · 22/06/2022 10:41

To be honest, as a manager I never cared whether someone lied about absence. I was never deceived by obvious lies, and the atmosphere at my workplace was such that I could well understand a need to get away from it.

It was the fact that I myself had pulled sickies for the same employer, and had numerous extended migraines due to stress that I understood what needed to change.

So I changed it all. And boom, no more liars, no more sickies, and a happy workforce who were super productive.

It's a bit like super strict parents raising good liars. Dogshit employers create bad behaviour in staff.
