I'm looking for a sick day from work.

What's a good excuse/made up illness for a sickie?

Thanks

Don't use migraine. Anyone who is, or knows, a real migraine sufferer might quiz you - it's rare to just have one migraine, so you'll probably find a fellow sufferer who sympathetically wants to know all about your symptoms, how long you've been a sufferer, and your migraine diary, and your treatment... yeah just a can of worm.

People who just have a bad headache not a real migraine, don't need a day off work, just a painkiller and come in an hour or two late.

Just say you think you are something funny or picked up some kind of tummy bug as you have been up in the night poorly and waiting for it to clear through your system.

MN baffles me.
Last week a woman found money in her house and the whole thread was full of honesty is the best policy you can’t keep the money.
Today is advice on how to steal a day’s pay without getting caught.
Truly bizarre.

Agree.

If you're not ill get your ass to work.

Can all the utter wankers pulling sickies by saying they have a migraine please pack it in?

It's people like you with "ooh I can't be arsed to go to work - wait I'll tell them it's a migraine" that ruin it for those of us who actually suffer migraine. We are ignored, disbelieved and frequently discriminated against in the workplace as a result.

Migraine is an incurable and often lifelong disease. It is the most common neurological disease in the world. Chronic migraine is also considered to be as debilitating and disabling as more visible conditions (including paralysis) due to the effects on people like me.

So either suck it up and go to work or have the decency to call in and ask for annual leave.

👏👏👏

Neverendingmindfuck · 20/06/2022 08:36

@Woolandwonder I am chronic sufferer too.
Seeing a neurologist has really changed my life. Yes I still have some migraines (atmospheric and stress mainly) but the drug she prescribed has been pretty amazing.

OP, if you really need a day off take a personal day. Don't lie.

Herecomesthesunshine · 20/06/2022 08:36

😂😂

I used a variation of this on Friday and hope my boss doesnt think I'm a wanker! I had been WFH with strange symptoms the few days prior to this and waiting for blood test results etc. A bad night on Thursday meant the tiredness sent me over the edge on Friday and I couldnt face work. At least I had more symptoms than tiredness 🤣🤣

mumda · 20/06/2022 08:37

D&V a very bad idea if you work in food industry as they won't want you back for a couple of days.

You'd like to lie to work for a day off?
Nah bugger off. If you can't make something up yourself you don't deserve a sickie.

Sswhinesthebest · 20/06/2022 08:40

ErrolTheDragon · 20/06/2022 08:11

Having read the OPs reason why she wants the day off...

She needs to sort this out properly. Otherwise the employer is likely to carry on trying to impose completely unreasonable schedules. 'Pulling a sickie' puts the OP in the wrong, whereas it sounds like the employer is wrong.

This.

You need to say that you just can’t physically go without a day off until the 2/7. It will make you ill. If they continue then yes pull a sicky, but then tell them the truth. You are feeling sick from exhaustion. And you waned them that you wouldn’t be able to hack it.

Jalisco · 20/06/2022 08:46

As someone who goes to work in pain all the time, because that is my life, I sincerely hope that every skiver and malingerer ends up with a serious “dose” of whatever it is that they have lied about. Your lies about migraines, bad backs and so on make genuinely sick people look bad and lazy – everyone else gets tarred by your lying. And for those who think it that it is ok to lie – no it isn’t.

Have some guts. If you have a problem with your conditions of employment, or don’t like your job, do something about it. Get another job. Refuse to work silly hours. Join a union. Whatever. But lying about being sick doesn’t solve any of your problems, and it isn’t a “victimless crime” because every time you do it, you make those of us who actually struggle with real conditions look like the liars that you are.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 20/06/2022 08:49

Why not just use annual leave if you want a day off? That's what it's for. Don't leave your colleagues in the shit covering your workload.

Brideandprejudice · 20/06/2022 08:49

Why not actually go in and address the scheduling issues?

balalake · 20/06/2022 08:51

Hello OP your behaviour is equivalent to that of a shoplifter albeit in a different form.

BingeBitch · 20/06/2022 08:51

I bet the naysayers are the worst offenders for this type of shit 😆

Blusteryday101 · 20/06/2022 08:53

Don't do it op! If you make up an excuse then it's virtually guaranteed that you will get sick for real!

ErrolTheDragon · 20/06/2022 08:55

Did you read the OPs second post? Sounds like she may be the one who is being dumped on.

PipeScatter · 20/06/2022 08:57

I haven't RTFT yet, so I'm sure someone's already mentioned this, but you are entitled to at least one 24 hour break in that period

ACAS Link

Otherwise, definitely D&V - especially if your work has a policy that you mustn't go to work for at least 24 hours after a bout of sickness.

Gusfringrules · 20/06/2022 06:46

Charming
Another life lesson for the next generation - just abdicate your personal responsibility and let others down because you feel like it
And the world does of of course, revolve around you

Exactly

Veol · 20/06/2022 09:00

The hot weather brought on a surprising number of covid cases at my work last week. Lots of people suddenly decided to conscientiously test on Tuesday night.

CoralPaperweight · 20/06/2022 09:01

OP I think you need some employment advice. I have just looked at ACAS website and it gives very clear details about what you are entitled to see

www.acas.org.uk/rest-breaks

So in any 7 day working period you are entitled to 24 hours uninterrupted rest which means that your boss should not be scheduling you for the weekend.

You are either sick or you are not.

pulling a sickie is not fair in the employer who pays you or the colleagues who have to pick up the slack.

if you need a day off book your annual leave.

CoralPaperweight · 20/06/2022 09:01

Sorry cross post with @PipeScatter

ErrolTheDragon · 20/06/2022 09:03

if you need a day off book your annual leave.

Read her update on why she wants a day off.
It's not likely this employer would grant her a request for a day of annual leave either, is it?

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 20/06/2022 09:04

@ErrolTheDragon then she needs to address it with her line manager in a preofessional, mature way. Not just 'take a sickie' which will make the workload worse.

Yes, that's essentially what I said upthread.

Hello OP your behaviour is equivalent to that of a shoplifter albeit in a different form.

No.
The OP is trying to pull a sickie to have a day off.
She is trying to protect herself from a manager who is taking the piss.

And seeing her last post, I suspect this is NOT the first time either.

@SummersBreeze I’d take that day off if you are sure this will protect you from working 2+ weeks Wo a break.
BUT you really REALLY need to sort it out. You need support from your union or ACAS. You need to have a word both with your manager and HR so it’s not happening again.
