Marlboro Red cigarettes.

Any current or ex-smokers with experience of these tabs ? I'm not a smoker but I've heard that Marlboro Red are quite 'heavy duty' and not for the faint hearted. I expect the same could be said of other premium cigarettes like Benson and Hedges Gold and Regal King Size. Is there any substance to what folk say about them. Just interested.

Thankyou.

I smoked 10+ years back.

Marlboro were much much stronger than other smokes back in the day. I believe they cut their strength some time ago though.

i don't know what made them so strong in comparison to Lambert's or B&H etc, but I could only smoke 29 of them a day compare to 20+ other brands. Maybe tar content or tobacco variety?

they were awesome though.
a friend smoked Silk Cut... I smoked Marlborough.. we never traded.

ldontWanna · 06/06/2022 20:20

They do tend to have a higher nicotine content and they are quite strong.

AyeUpMeDuck · 06/06/2022 20:21

*I could only smoke 10 of them a day compare to 20+ other brands

Marlboro Red and B&H were really strong, regal not quite as bad, most people where I hung out only smoked Marlboro on a night out to look good then lambert and butler the rest of the time, but this was in the 90’s and early 00’s when I was a smoker and a clubber.

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 06/06/2022 20:34

Non smoker but even l know Marlboro are hard-core!!

Breezycheesetrees · 06/06/2022 20:37

Haven't smoked for years, but I can still remember what a full-strength Marlboro felt like on the lungs. Camels though, fucking hell (not lights). They made your mouth itch.

WildRosie · 06/06/2022 20:38

I know Marlboro Lights and regular Camels were fashionable in the 80s and 90s. I knew someone who smoked the Dunhills from the wide packet. I've never seen anyone with a Sobranie cocktail cigarette!

Marlboro Red likely benefited strongly from their Marlboro Flavor - Country ads and the cowboy.

Marlboro red were my brand! Then it just became too expensive. They were the best though and I'd buy the 100s - a bit longer so am extra drag or two for pennies more

FlibbertyGiblets · 06/06/2022 20:43

I used to smoke Dunhill in the wide packet. Also St Moritz when flush. My glamorous mate used to bring little Shropshire me tiny Turkish cigs from some chi chi little tobacconist in London somewhere, they were divine.
This was 30 odd years ago, not recent, I gave up smoking eons ago.

mypinkslippers · 06/06/2022 20:44

My dad smokes these. They are lethal. I can't even look at them.

mypinkslippers · 06/06/2022 20:45

I used to favour Malboro Lights personally, having began on Silk Cut Silver £2 a pack of 10 and I was never a huge smoker, but the person who got me into smoking in 6th form smoked Camels.

BertieBotts · 06/06/2022 20:47

They used to have the tar and nicotine levels printed on the side of the pack. Marlborough lights were about as strong as the normal strength of most other brands. Marlborough red much stronger. I can't remember the numbers.

I used to like B&H but Richmond were really cheap and they tasted rough as.

Ferngreen · 06/06/2022 20:49

I thought Marlboro were plain tobacco and the others like b&h were Virginia - hence the stronger taste.
Gauloise were the classy fag to smoke imv

CornishPorsche · 06/06/2022 20:49

Oh, I LOVED Marlboro red in the 90s when ai could afford to (otherwise on roll ups) then switched to Marlboro Lights for a few years before menthols then giving up.

I was the only one in my group who smoked them, had to buy them in a special tobacco shop in Penzance back in the day. 😂

They were very strong, but I adored them. I also lived French cigs but only if they had filters.

Christ I miss smoking.... Then I have a toke of a cig and remember all the reasons I gave up. The after-smell being one of the biggest. Still a huge issue to me. Bleurgh.

cakewitch · 06/06/2022 20:50

How much are they nowadays?? Must be nearly 15 quid a packet or something.. how anyone can afford to smoke so called, 'premium tobacco brands' i'll never know.

Floydthebarber · 06/06/2022 20:51

Marlboro lights were my cigarette of choice 15-20 years ago when out or just quite stressed. I had a friend who smoked them regularly and she said that Marlboro Reds were another level of cigarette!

Antarcticant · 06/06/2022 20:52

I found them much rougher than B&H - don't know why as they were nominally the same strength.

Consulate menthols were my favourite.

LidlCinnamonBun · 06/06/2022 20:52

I smoked them to be like Carrie in Sex And The City back in the day 😚

SellFridges · 06/06/2022 20:54

I used to smoke Marlboro Lites. So did pretty much every social smoker I knew in the late nineties. I once accidentally bought a pack of Reds from a vending machine and a uni friend swapped me his pack of Lites because he said I wouldn’t handle them.

I stopped even social smoking when they went to a fiver a pack. That was in about 2000. God knows what they are now. No idea how people can afford it.

WildRosie · 06/06/2022 20:54

Seems all the talk was true!

Marlboro Red were the best. The soft pack had even more cool factor, but were not exactly the practical option.

Yarnasaurus · 06/06/2022 20:56

I wasn't a fan of Marlboro at all, I can't remember if they were stronger, they just tasted grim. I started with Players No. 6 and then Embassy No. 1 and then handrolling.

During my goth years I'd buy Sobranie Black Russian for clubbing nights.

Nat6999 · 06/06/2022 20:57

I always smoked B & H unless I was skint & then Mayfair, I really miss menthol cigarettes as well.

Ladiz · 06/06/2022 20:58

Also smoked big-hitting Marlboro Reds before moving onto their Milds. Camel had a strange taste for me, always made me feel a bit sick. Sobranie cocktail cigs got me smoking in the first place when I was trying to look cool. Actually I did look very cool, but probs smelled pretty awful!

EllaPaella · 06/06/2022 20:59

I gave up smoking 12 years ago red Marlborough smokers were hardcore, along with B&H, Embassy, Regal and Camel.
