Marlboro Red cigarettes.

Any current or ex-smokers with experience of these tabs ? I'm not a smoker but I've heard that Marlboro Red are quite 'heavy duty' and not for the faint hearted. I expect the same could be said of other premium cigarettes like Benson and Hedges Gold and Regal King Size. Is there any substance to what folk say about them. Just interested.

Thankyou.

God this brings back memories, even though the mere thought of smoking now makes me feel sick. Like many others I was a young adult in the nineties and smoked Marlboro Lights Silk Cut, Camels and Gauloises Went to the US and felt very cool having a soft packet and failing to throw a ciggie into my mouth. Did anyone hear the crazy conspiracy theory about Marlboro being linked to the Ku Klux Klan as 'evidenced' by the three inverted triangles.on the packet? (told to me by a stoned sixth former so not exactly reliable source material).

Did you go to Richmond College??? Yes, and if you turn Marlboro upside down it reads ‘orrible Jew - (not literally)

This thread is making me feel all fuzzy!
I started smoking consulate... they were £1 for ten. We used to chip in and smoke them at my friends house when her dad was out on a Friday night. We would have been about 12 I guess?

Moved on to silk cut, and eventually to Marlboro reds. I remember going on big nights out, smoking 20 fags and used to feel like my chest had been crushed in the morning.

I bought Ducados I think they were called on holiday in Spain as a teen. They were like 25p for 20. THEY were hardcore!!

We used to go to the local petrol station and buy "20 number 1 and a packet of rizla please". Those were the days! Wink

Marlboro lights were my cigarette of choice though. I've not smoked for over 20 years, but I used to bloody love it.

Lonelycrab · 07/06/2022 06:59

We used to block up the perforations on the filter of a Silk cut (to turn them into a proper fag) by using a torn off strip of rizla sticky.

Arnaquer · 07/06/2022 07:00

I haven't smoked for 25 years but this thread is making me want a fag!
I started on Regals, then moved to Marlboros although lights as the reds were super strong. I liked a silk cut too.

One of the Actors who played the Marlboro man died of lung cancer. His widow claimed it was caused by him being forced to take multiple heavy drags during prolonged filming days and sued the company.

letsnotdothat · 07/06/2022 07:54

I smoked Marlboro reds as a teen. They’re renowned for being strong, I just thought they were cool because Slash smoked them.

Auntieobem · 07/06/2022 08:01

I smoked reds and then moved to lights before I stopped 7 years ago. JPS blacks were v v strong. A uni friend used to get clove cigarettes sent over from Malaya or somewhere, they were great, lasted ages!

BringMeTea · 07/06/2022 08:34

Ha yes to the kkk and anti-semitic design. Also yes to Marlboro mediums. Pack was still red but with more white. 20 bobs. Bob Marlboros... simpler times.

brianixon · 07/06/2022 10:20

@Yarnasaurus , Thanks for the reminder of Sobranie Black Russians.
Them and the 'cocktail' cigarettes with coloured papers. Very stylish back then.
Stated buying Park Drive and Woodbines at 9 old pence (9d) for 5.

TwinklingFairyLights · 07/06/2022 10:25

God I miss smoking. Really bloody expensive now. The person in front of me was buying a pack the other day, £14 ish.

WildRosie · 07/06/2022 11:18

Slight thread drift but were/are Rothmans and Peter Stuyvesant considered to be premium cigarettes or was it just fancy packaging (before the rules changed) ?

JPS were the strongest?

Karenina40 · 07/06/2022 13:04

Oh, I used to smoke Sobranie cocktail cigarettes 17 years ago. I loved the colourful pallet as well as the taste. They used to be considered the cigarettes of wealthy Russians :)

majorquimby · 07/06/2022 13:07

I used to smoke I the 90s and Marlboro Reds used to make me vom. Marlborough Lights no problem but Reds were hardcore. I used to have a friend who smoked them with the filters ripped off!

LetsGoCrazyPurpleBanana · 07/06/2022 14:20

Used to smoke Marlborough lights many years ago, occasionally Gitaine as I had read John Lennon used to smoke them🤦‍♀️🤣They tasted more like cigars 🤢

IllDoItButOnlyForTheAttention · 07/06/2022 14:21

So many memories. I was also young in the 90s and smoked Marlboros (reds and lights), Camels, Luckies. Kools when I was on my USA road trip in 2000.

Gauloises were my brand when I could get them. Tried Gitanes in France to be cool Blush but couldn't get on with them. Disque Bleu the same.

Sobranies were so pretty - an occasional pretentious treat!

I got told off in a Paris cafe once for smoking a clove cigarette...

A580Hojas · 07/06/2022 14:34

I still smoke a bit Blush, Silk Cut Purple. Even the mention of the words Marlboro Red makes me feel nauseous, dizzy and off my face!

Blackbirdblue30 · 07/06/2022 14:36

I used to smoke Marlboro red. I like stronger flavours. The flashbacks.. I also had a summer smoking More menthols because we thought they (we) looked so cool. I haven't smoked in years and now I can't stand the smell. I moved onto rollies due to the expense, before getting a vape to wean off entirely. However, I had a drag from a Marlboro red in a pub last summer and it was like all the best bits from my university memories in a taste...

jevoudrais · 07/06/2022 14:39

Non smoker but worked in Tesco Express when at uni. Marlboro red were for the hardcore! As were B&H gold.

jevoudrais · 07/06/2022 14:42

@WildRosie Rothmans were the cheap ones, not premium.

WildRosie · 07/06/2022 15:17

Thankyou jevoudrais.

Anyone got a cigarette?...

Shangrila · 08/06/2022 00:07

Marlboro Reds and Embassy #1 were payday cigs. Baccy the rest of the month.

worraliberty · 08/06/2022 00:33

OMG this thread has brought back so many memories! I thought it was just me and my friends who covered the Silk Cut filters with Rizlas 🤗

On a different note, does anyone who went to primary school in the 70s remember taking a message to the staff room, and almost being able to cut the cigarette smoke with a knife, when the teachers opened the door?

Sortilege · 08/06/2022 00:37

Ex smoker here. I used to smoke silk cut or Marlboro lights. B&H at a push, as that is what my ex and some friends smoked (and bought duty free). One night I ran out and bought Marlboro red from one of those ££££s vending machines and wow. They were a whole other level from B&H. I felt as though my throat had been sandpapered. I’m going back a couple of decades, mind you.
