Binley Mega Chippy

We are staying in Yorkshire for a few days, on our way back to London, our daughter is desperate to visit BMC in Coventry. I don't understand the excitement but it's not too much of a detour so I said yes - but we can't find out if it's open on Sunday evenings. Google says 24 hours, a photo of its opening times says closed all day, another website claims midday until 11pm. Does anyone know?

Have you seen the queues ?

everythingcrossed · 05/06/2022 13:23

Honestly, I know almost nothing about it. I'm happy to spend a bit of time queueing as she has been really good while we've been away - I don't want to turn up and find it's closed up.

The menu suggests it's just a normal chippy menu really, it's just a bigger building and has a big 'mega chippy' sign.

Lunificent · 05/06/2022 13:26

Would she be happy to view its magnificence without partaking of it’s offerings?Just getting a pic in front of it might be good enough.

nocoolnamesleft · 05/06/2022 13:26

Their own website says open every day until 10pm, but excludes Sundays. So I would assume closed on Sundays.

greyspottedgoose · 05/06/2022 13:28

It's become tiktik famous recently after randomly appearing on peoples for you pages, now people are travelling for hours to try it to make tiktoks, very mixed reviews and most say not worth the trip it's just a chippy

redskyatnight · 05/06/2022 13:29

DS went there last week. He queued for an hour, met a "famous" TikToker and ended up as a vague background person in a youtube video.
It also became his most followed story on SnapChat.

He therefore considers it day well spent (we live about an hour's drive away; he went with friends who couldn't bothered to queue :) ) I find the whole thing bemusing.

He said the food was on the better than average side of fish and chip shop fare, but not remotely worth going to for the food.

So depends whether you think it is worth it to make your daughter happy really :)

everythingcrossed · 05/06/2022 13:32

It is definitely about visiting this site of TikTok specialness rather than expecting exceptional food.

It has a website? Why couldn't I find that???

Their Facebook page says they’re open until 11 tonight.

worraliberty · 05/06/2022 13:50

They have an FB page, I suppose you could ask on that?

NohoHank · 05/06/2022 14:01

Who not ring them? But it's basically just a big standard Chippy. Nothing special about it at all. If you want good fish and chips get yourself some orange chips from the Black Country.

Jeansgoals · 05/06/2022 14:07

This is just getting ridiculous now 😐

ScootsMcHoy · 05/06/2022 14:17

Chip shops are traditionally closed on a Sunday and technically it's not legal to sell a fried fish on a Sunday. But nobody takes any notice of that any more.

I agree that you should ask on FB as someone in the queue will know.

I know it's all a nonsense but it's a good thing to do things that other people in your family want to do.

Hawkins001 · 05/06/2022 14:19

This the chippy I believe where some people paid £80 split between 12 people for a taxi there and back.

Needmorelego · 05/06/2022 14:53

I live in London so I have told my daughter several times "We are not going to f-ing Coventry for some f-ing chips".
Now I have the stupid jingle in my head again.
Yay....

ProclivityForPyrotechnics · 05/06/2022 14:54

Hahaha! This is hilarious!

ProclivityForPyrotechnics · 05/06/2022 14:56

Tbh if she gets a photo of herself outside the chippy she should be happy with that. Everyone who has been said the food is shit. Friends live nearby and said the queues are insane but a lot of people go into the tony carvery next door to eat!

Needmorelego · 05/06/2022 14:57

@Hawkins001 how did 12 people fit in a taxi? Were they comedy clowns?

iklboo · 05/06/2022 14:59

Next episode of ShitTox - personally & completely carry out every instruction in Spitting Images' Chicken Song.

Waits for 'hilarious' videos of desperate fame hungry wannabes shoving deckchairs up their noses, burying clothes and pretending their name is Keith.

GagaBinks · 05/06/2022 15:03

I live a third of a mile around the corner and I assure you that it's not worth the hype for the food. It's my local chippy and I would rather drive to one further away.

But I'm guessing the TikTok fame isn't for the food; it's just a joke to the teenagers. Bit of harmless fun really.

CthulhuInDisguise · 05/06/2022 15:04

It's not even the best chippy in Binley. Honestly, the locals are baffled by this. Not worth the drive from my side of the city let alone Yorkshire!

everythingcrossed · 05/06/2022 15:18

Thank you for your replies - I'm not on FB (and not interested in joining) so can't ask there. I think we'll pass by and hope that it is open and, if not, hope its iconic emoji shutters are enough to satisfy her.

I absolutely do not understand the fascination with Binley Mega Chippy but want to give my daughter a treat at the end of her holiday and break up a long drive.

OP posts:
CthulhuInDisguise · 05/06/2022 15:20

It was closed when I drove past an hour ago, there were people in the car park taking selfies.

countdowntonap · 05/06/2022 15:23

It’s closed today. There are loads of pictures on Facebook of people infront of it in the last couple of hours and it’s shut.
These photos are all public on FB.

I used to live near Coventry (and gave birth at the hospital down the road from Binley Mega Chippy). Friends who are still there say it's not even the best chippy in Binley. But I'm sure your daughter isn't going for the food. I hope you have a lovely time! It's great that you're prepared to do this for her; when I was a teenager my parents were scathing about youth culture.
